Rank → Rain is also an invalid move, by the way, since it involves making two changes (the subtraction of K and the insertion of I). For each move you may only do ONE of the following:

1) remove one letter from the word, without changing the order of the others

2) add one letter to the word (in any position) without changing the order of the others

3) change one letter in the word to a different letter, without changing the order of the others

 

You may NOT:

- transpose a pair of letters in the word or otherwise rearrange the letters

- remove a letter and insert a letter in a different position in the same move

- use proper nouns, acronyms, abbreviations, or non-English words.

- use obscene words, but this should go without saying
