Red Sox continue to be horrible, dropping 2 games to the orioles after winning 8 of 10.

Ortiz hit two home runs [positive]

but Dice K and Wakefield both got rocked for 6 runs each [negative]

Adrian Beltre is fourth in AL batting average [positive]

but Lackey and Beckett have ERA's above 5 for April [negative].

Lackey and Beckett will figure it out, just maybe too late

Wouldn't that be better suited for breast cancer awareness? Everything is a gimmick these days.

Er, the Rangers are only 1 game ahead of Oakland. I think you're getting the 5 from that Oakland is 5 games behind for the wild card slot (currently occupied by the Yankees).

Your right, i looked at the wrong column.  WCGB is a new item.

but they have a series with the As so that could grow to 4.

The wild card slot in the AL is impossible to get if your not the Rays/Sox/ or Yankees. The only time it's been occupied by a non-AL East team since 2002 was 2006. Which kind of stinks, i'd like more parity, but hey, i'm a Rockies fan, what do I care 3.gif

This afternoon's Yankees/Tigers game went surprisingly fast. Only ~2 hours and 20 minutes. Seeing a baseball game clock in under 3 hours is unusual these days (although the opposite used to be true).

I wonder if the fact that they're playing another one tonight to make up for yesterday's rainout influenced that? Having to play two games in a day instead of one might make the players inclined to move things along and get things over with more.

Which there's certainly a lot of room for. The reason games take longer than they used to is that batters are now always stepping out of the box between pitches to adjust their gloves, knock dirt off their cleats, etc. This sort of delay is a fairly recent phenomenon (90's?).

No thats been going on for a while, It also delays things when no one pitches compleate games any more.

look at the stats of Robin Roberts who passed recently

from 1949-1960 he average 20 compleate games/season i dont think moder era pitchers

will get 20 compleate games in thier careers.changing pitchers 2 or 3 times sure slows things down.

Last year the rangers seem to want to try speeding things up( and catch the batter ) and  had the pitchers  start thier pitches while the bater was standing in the box taping dirt off his shoes or whater ever. It seem to work for a while.

Well that was a dramatic Yankees/Red Sox game. Papelbon blows another save... Marcus Thames gets the honorary pie to the face.

Also, tickets acquired: I'm going with my sisters to see the Yankees/Mets game at CitiField this Sunday night.

Twice, on April 4th and May 9th (both in Boston). The Yanks have beat the Sox five times so far this year (4/6, 4/7, 5/7, and 5/8 in Boston, 5/17 in the Bronx) .

Tonight's game is in rain delay... probably going to be a rainout. It's been raining all day here.

    Bucs 2, Phillies 1.

Awesome. Can they keep it up? Of course not.

I'm thinking about a trip to Cinci late this summer. To the only MLB ballpark where, if you hit one out of the park, you have the potential to hit one out of the state.

Well, so much for the rainout, they played the game.

....and Marcus Thames, mister walkoff hero from last night? Yeah, well, now he thinks he's Willie Mays and he drops the ball trying to basket catch it, allowing two runs to score and costing the Yanks the game. FAIL.

And Tampa won, so now they're 3 games behind.

Incidentally, guess who the Yanks are playing their next couple of games against.

In contrast to yesterday, when Halladay pitched a perfect game. Only the 20th of those in major league history.

Interesting thing is it also makes the second this season... it's been 130 years since that last happened.

Oh my god. Umpires have been HORRIBLE!!! Countless ejections and blown calls. After tonight, when Armando Galarraga's perfect game was ended by a horrible call at first base, I think that baseball will have to implement instant replay. No reviewing balls and strikes, but outs and catches should be included.

And also, the Twins lost on a blown call, too! Ugh.......

Twinsfan14:  We're all HUMANS! We make mistakes, after the fact, Jim Joyce even admitted that he made a mistake. I believe that was very honorable of him! Most Umpires could care less about whether or not they miss a call. And he's sorry for it. I've made some bad calls as a little league umpire and I get torn to pieces by the people, and I apologize for mistakes like what happened to Jim Joyce. If it wasn't for that instant replay I would have called the runner safe. That's just my opinion.

Seriously though this is being blown WAY out of proportion. I saw it in slo-mo.. it was an extremely close call.. I'd guess on the order of  1/12 to 1/24 of a second... remember that in baseball a "tie goes to the runner"

MLB already has instant replay capability available to the umpires.

However, unlike with the NFL, the umpires only ever use it when they deem necessary. There is no "coach's challenge".

...nor should there be. Really, the way you have to look at it is this: it doesn't matter what actually happened, what matters is what the umpire called. You can beat the throw by a mile, if the umpire calls you out, you're out, and that's final. Over a century of precedent establishes this - the umpire rules supreme, you can't argue with them. Raise a stink about a call and you get ejected. No buts.

That said, I'm surprised the umpire issued an apology. He shouldn't have done that. 20.gif

"Never admit that you're wrong" is Umpiring 101. The umpire is never wrong.
