MLB already has instant replay capability available to the umpires.

However, unlike with the NFL, the umpires only ever use it when they deem necessary. There is no "coach's challenge".

...nor should there be. Really, the way you have to look at it is this: it doesn't matter what actually happened, what matters is what the umpire called. You can beat the throw by a mile, if the umpire calls you out, you're out, and that's final. Over a century of precedent establishes this - the umpire rules supreme, you can't argue with them. Raise a stink about a call and you get ejected. No buts.

That said, I'm surprised the umpire issued an apology. He shouldn't have done that.

"Never admit that you're wrong" is Umpiring 101. The umpire is never wrong.quote>

Yes, I do agree that we're all human and we all make mistakes. If this were a meaningless out in the 4th inning that wouldn't score anybody, this wouldn't be a big deal. But this was the last out of a game that would make baseball history for a perfect game has only been pitched 20 times in the 120+ years of Major Leauge Baseball. The technology is there, and managers shouldn't be able to challenge like in the NFL. The umpires should decide whether or not the call need be reviewed.

Dream until your dreams come true.

Bud Selig is a jerk what has he ever done other then allow the MLB minimum salaries to balloon, he failed to address steroids until he was forced to, only good move he ever made was interleague play. Glad to see him steping down hope someone better replaces him.

Braves start a series with the Dodgers hope they can extend their 8 game winning streak tonight!

Inter league play was inevitable. I wouldn't even give him "credit" for it.

Meh. Interleague play is - or more like was - just a gimmick. In 1998 or so if you wanted to see the Yankees play the Mets, it was going to run you 100 bucks for a cheap seat. I was able to get tickets in the upper deck in left field for $29 a pop this year. The novelty has really worn off.

lol.. I should have put a "j/k" after that.. I really wasn't chastening you.. I know how it can be when the net is slow.. (you can DELETE your duplicate though.. don't know if you saw those little buttons allowed to you.. 4.gif  2.gif

I have no strong position on Selig's decision, but the best comment I've heard is that a decision that says this is "to be deemed a perfect game for the record books" would not change the game's outcome.. in other words it would be a fairly minor issue. On the other hand, baseball is and always has been a very conservative game and his decision was precisely in line with historical precedent.

The calls by umpires have always been "the law" and it is a sacrosanct element in the very ethos of the game. And they have always erred as well.. they simply aren't reversed. . With respect to the pitcher, he did what he did.. exactly and only.. whatever the official record shows will always be appending with "ya but" 4.gif

How would you all handle it if the situation were reversed? Suppose he were actually called OUT, and he was shown by replay to be "safe".. would you all want the "perfect game" to be deleted? Would you revise the game stats for all events following the "safe" and if so, how? It couldn't be done.. so I feel his decision was not merely recalcitrant or reactionary. I believe it was well-founded.

Do you all want to add the "5 minute delay and umpires under hoods at video cam's" to be introduced to the game? How about electronic detection of strikes and balls? Would "challenges" be required, or would the umpires call their own by some "super ump" in some "skybox"? Or that plus challenges?

Actually the umpires humanity is fundamental to baseball. It may surprise the uninitiated to know that the "strike zone" is not absolute.. it varies umpire to umpire 4.gif And how easy is it to anger one.. which will throw you out and which will laugh it off? Should we set up a jury system? 4.gif

I'm certainly no expert, but currently I believe "official replay" is allowed in exactly one case... the determination of the "fairness" of a home run.. usually at the foul line poles where no umpire is within about 300 feet and can be very difficult to see among the background clutter.

Or whether it actually "went over the fence". See: A-Rod's shot off the camera in right field in Game 3 the World Series last year that was ruled a home run upon review.

Apparently it's also allowed to determine if there was fan interference with the ball.

Not all ball parks have instant reply, i believe its only the big team ball parks like Yankee Stadium and Fenway i'm not exactly sure how many, but i doubt Comerica park even has it yet.

Its amazing Moyer can still pitch he is older the my parents, the basball tonight crew were talking about him having a shot at 300 wins anyone seeing that happen? I'm sure Pettitte could do it but he has said he wishes to retire after the season. CC may be able to but only if he dosen't injure himself like Jason Schmidt.

It seems that the Braves and Dodgers are evenly matched as the two teams split the 4-game series in LA this weekend. Both started the season 8-14 and are both now 33-24, a 23-10 run since the atrocious starts. Perhaps these two teams will meet in the playoffs.

Crap. Game 3 of the Bucs Cubs was today thanks to a rain out last week. No sweep for Pittsburgh this time. The Pirates are amidst playing 3 different teams in 3 days. Giants on Sunday (which I went to) Cubs on Monday (make-up game from rain out) Nationals on Tuesday. That's a rarity, playing 3 teams in 3 days.

I am tired of hearing hype about Stephen Strasburg already.   and the guy hasn't even starting playing yet.

Should we wait until he actually does something before getting all spun up about him?

I haven't seen the local sportcasters in such a tizzy since the second coming of Joe Gibbs.  and we all know how that turned out.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

14 stike outs in his 1st outing is  not a bad start concidering the single game record is only 20.

There was a lot of hype about Kerry Wood, at least around here, since he went my my high school his senior yeear.

he had 20 strike outs in his 5th start for the Cubs

I'm not bashing them... just stating the obvious. There's no sense in creating delusions about the Bucs, who are now officially the team with the worst record in the NL.

A local radio personality claims that it is the fault of all the people who buy tickets that the Bucs are so bad because "we encourage it." I say he's a fool, because I'm cheering for the team, not the owners. Right now the plan seems to be to keep losing so as to get a few more years of good picks while we rebuild.

Okay, first of all, it's been over a decade since "da bomb" was a phrase to use. 21.gif

As for the Reds, they're in first place in the NL central at the moment, so I certainly wouldn't count them out for this year.

Oh, and the Yankees are now back tied for first in the AL East. 10.gif Damn Rays...
