Oops. My dad's going to be stuck in Belfast tonight unless he can get on a ferry.

They say we might have an interestingly red sunset tonight. Other than that the skies look and taste the same as always... grey and mucky 15.gif

Schiphol Airport will be closed from 19.00 when the ash cloud is supposed to get over our airspace. I wonder if I could see it....

Sucks to be flying on a plane now though.

This is absolutely incredible. I normally have at least three aeroplane contrails going over my house at ANY one time. The sky is..empty. It's clear. I have never seen it like this before. It is absolutely stunning. I wish it could stay like this for a lot longer.

I'm wondering what wonders this will do for air and noise pollution. It's gonna give climate scientists a hell of a lot of data to work with. I seem to recall that after the 9/11 flight ban the air in the New York area was 20% cleaner for months.

When you consider that there are over 5000 flights a day taking and landing from British airports..well..this might have a dramatic impact.

^Yes, but if you have 5000 flights everyday in a row for years, will one or two days of no flights really make such a big difference?

Although I see what you mean. I know when I go away to somewhere less developed its always odd seeing so many stars or having such fresh air/quiet surroundings. And the airplanes certainly are noisy as heck, although I live next to one of the biggest highways in Massachusetts so it wouldn't make a difference haha 15.gif

Ever been sleeping when an obnoxiously low airplane comes by and makes you think the world is blowing up? I hate that. Come to think of it i'm sandwiched between two military bases [although one might be shut down and used as a small airport?]

This post is so random and nonsensical, but i'll just throw in one last thing related to the subject. My dads got to get to London for a huge business meeting. Might not be able to get a flight till monday since saturday and sunday are booked.

It's nice to have some peace and quiet in the skies where I live for a change.

I bet the pilots are happy about their day off!

Waiting for someone to say this is the Earth protecting itself against Global Warming by grounded all the aeroplanes...

I heard a plane going over my house and was like WTH till I realised in was a helicopter 9.gif

But one of my best friends is stuck in the US as her flights been cancelled so hopefully it will be over soon. In fact this was a crap time for the volcano to erupt right at the end of Easter Holidays.

And if it''s erupted since Wednesday how come there wasn't any warning for flyers to reschedule their flights.

Also wasn't it Iceland's fault for the recession, and now they are shutting down much of Europe's Airspace, which I imagine will have an effect on the economy or something bussinessy like that.

What is wrong with this thread??

It is really odd not to hear an airplane for hours. Where I live in the UK I am right under the Heathrow flight path, a plane goes over every 3 minutes and since 12pm not a noise apart from traffic. And by the sounds of things not another plane until 1pm tomorrow.

Planes make such a huge amount of background noise, I never realised until today, part of me hopes this carries on for like half a year (last time this volcanoe erupted it erupted for a year) and we are forced to come up with an alternative to air travel. Or at least a high capacity high speed link to an airport in france, so someone else can have all the noise.

I hope that those who live in the affected area can get some interesting pictures for those of us who do not.

Hopefully, this won't rival the worst volcano disaster.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

The amount of disruption this has caused is pretty amazing.

The UK will have a closed airspace until 3pm Friday. This will effect at least 10,000 flights...

Planes have been grounded in Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. France is also preparing to close its main airports.

Poland and Spain have closed all Northbound flights.

At least half of all flights from the entirety of Europe to the USA tomorrow will be cancelled...

No pretty sunset photos..but a beautifully contrail-clear sky I took today.

Last I heard about an hour ago on ITV news was it 1pm, so now it's been moved forward (or is it back) to 3pm?

Did you know that the volcano was actually set off by Aliens who wanted to ground all the planes to stop people moving around so they could nuke us all??

interestingly the haze is very visible around the horizon and i find i can look straight up at blue sky for alot longer than normal. living in mid kent i am right under gatwick & heathrow flightpath, the normal 5-8 planes in the sky were gone, although a learjet went over around 3-5000 ft around 8.30pm so assume that it was someone fairly important.

now its morning it seems she is still erupting like a good-un.
