Little tip for VashTS240

Where you highway goes sunken, its a good idea to smooth out the ground firt by dragging rail over it (rail has less of a gradient, ideal for a highway) then laying the road.

RHW has NO sloping feature, it just follows the ground.

The ramps are actually the only steep slope. I manually graded the slope for the E-W HWY (though it could use a slightly more graded approach). Thank you for the rail tip, btw. Learn something new everyday.

I fixed the E-W HWY not being able to go certain directions on the NW-SE HWY.

Nice interchange Vash, it's so much more organized than mine, though I did mine without any prior planning. Also at the time my diagonal exits wouldn't work, so I just linked what I could however I could. I'm surprised I didn't get stuck anywhere with no way to link my highways, but I guess it speaks for the versatility of the RHW.

I tried withOUT planning. Kept failing.

Took about 5-10 sketches b4 I got it (only the last one was in pencil)

1: Well you're going to be stuck with them in v4.0 3.gif But if you like darker textures, wait for Darkphalt (will be out sometime soon after v4.0)

2. Just because two highways are large doesn't mean that the changing traffic volume is great. And I get to choose what I want to build. Plus it was just teasing features. (Oh how much fun... 3.gif but hard work making them)

VashT: Very interesting clover-ish variant, combining multiple interchanges. And the fixes seem to have done the trick. Also, once you get the hang of it, you don't need to sketch stuff down, you start visualizing it in your head 3.gif

Maarten: Very nice 2.gif

Well to be fair, I manipulated by highways a whole lot until I got it to work, and when I started running out of space I started building around the outside of the existing interchange making it roughly the size of a medium tile.

I just realized that pecause of the page flip bug on the last thread, you most likely haven't seen my directional 3-way interchange. For those who have seen it by some off-chance, you would know that I needed a smoother slope back then. I re-done the interchange and here's the result.

directional3way.jpg

And for those who remember my second parcolo hooked up to a roundabout, I upgraded it after building a local airport.

parcoloroundaboutupgrad.jpg

I added a couple OWR's at the other end of the roundabout, had them go around, and they head to the local airport. You'll also notice that there are some new elevated rails built as well.

I really like the compact diamonds shown earlier on, although they're a bit out of place in a rural setting where there's space to have full rumps.

For those who don't know about it, I've done a a series of 12 (so far) tutorials on junction design with the RHW here:

Also; here an inner city ring road inspired by the half-finished Glasgow Inner Ring Road (what is now the M8 in central glasow)

Just came from a completely vanilla Rush Hour for five-ish years in December and when I got into modding SC4 (I've been into modding TS2 and NFS IV for a while but I never thought of SC4), the RHW V3.~ took my breath away (though having to go from three lanes to two lanes to Maxis highway is a little annoying, I need so much space where it just isn't) with its sheer flexibility. I can't wait for V4.0.

I also like the new textures. The exits look much more part of the network in V4.0 then an afterthought (Which some really looked like in V3.~ with different saturations and brightnesses - you guys do a great job though!).

Just a question, did you fix the pathing on the 3S-4S Changer (The correct word isn't coming to me)? It makes U-Drive it crash whenever I drive over one in the outside lane.

On the hole, asteconn probably just couldn't be bothered taking a screenshot of the middle bit. I know I couldn't be.

By the way, Here's probably my most complicated RHW intersection (With some overpasses thrown in for good measure) that I can get in a zoom that provides detail.

While I think that what you've all done with the Real Highway Project is nothing less than completely impressive... ... I really find it hard to use much because the "the long, drawn out, and unrealistic way it has to be used, it just doesn't make it practical in large urban areas... Blue Lightning in your recent last picture ... it just seems to be a waste of space. Of course ... this is just my own opinion and I'm not casting aspersions on anything.

I actually kinda feel the same way.

Rural/Farm areas is great for it's usage (or small cities)

but Urban areas (the big cities with skyscrapers) is where I'd end up using the Maxis default (I would love it if it were re-done to be a two lane highway, if possible)

on that same note, as long as you're not connecting multiple highways, it is realistic for it's usage (and if the default could be made a two lane, it'd make way for and save so much space for multi-highway connections)

I think this is a Y-Stack? After all the time I spent on it I had to make sure I wasn't the only one to see it! As you can see, I was close to sea level, which did NOT make life easy for me. I also ran out of space on the left-hand side of the picture, meaning I had to resort to an MIS rather than a RHW6 splitter. I tried to use wide curves wherever possible, but in the end getting it finished had to take priority! Now to finish the eyecandy....

EDIT: note also on the south-bound section after the tunnel at the bottom of the picture I ran out of space and had to continue the OWR rather than change back to RWH4. At least I can rectify this oversight (and then get wide curves in too) by moving the north-bound RHW6 after a little bit of terraforming, but can I be bothered? 2.gif

Chocolate City: Well the thing is with the size of these interchanges, people are quite used to the insanely tiny (scale wise) maxis highway interchanges that when they see an approxamately correctly scaled RHW interchange, they infer that it is too big. IRL, do interchanges that handle large amounts of traffic take up just 64 (4 SC4 tiles) meters for a ramp? Or any interchange for that matter? Most of those interchanges have their acel/decel lanes that long or longer, let alone the entire thing. I built those interchanges and highways to be that large out of necessity. 2 million sims commute that area, and I've tried using maxis highway there. Couldn't take the traffic. Plus it looked kinda bad.

Silhouette Saloon: Very nice, Building near water can be quite a challenge. Personally it looks fine to me; plus the grade separation is a nice plus.

I don't know what to put here anymore.

In tight city areas, highway interchanges tend to criss-cross with elevated exits or other methods to lessen space taken. I suppose it's a matter of building size to highway size as a rough comparison, which makes it look less realistic, imho.

Also, the major thing the Maxis hwys are missing are the accel/decel lanes. Also be nice to have them 2 lane and no outside barrier (except for el-hwy)

These are some of my interchanges:

My biggest interchange ever (too big actually 3.gif ), in the city of Suburbiajaja:

Same interchange, but closer:

Another interchange from the city of Eindergem:

Same interchange:

That's all for now 4.gif

Yes, the weaving is a problem, for humans, that is. Sims, on the other hand have supernatural forces, so for them it's a piece of cake 3.gif

And yes, that's your Belgian Signage set (a pity that there are no diagonal signs, but I'm very happy with what I've got 4.gif )

Blue Lightning... I live in California .. known for its complex freeway systems ... and I think that the only interchange that would remotely look like the Real Highway Project is the Interstate 5 -580 & 205 near Stockton and Tracy , Ca... that thing stretches on for 12 miles in some parts
