Here is my city of Fedora. Population of about 130K.

cxlscreenshotfedora4.jpg

Overlooking the suburbs. Can see some farms on the upper right, downtown is directly right. Direcrtly ahead of the other side of the ridge is the Industrial center.

cxlscreenshotfedora0.jpg

This is what you consider "Downtown".

cxlscreenshotfedora2.jpg

Downtown from Overhead. Is "divided up" by expressways because that's where potential highways will go in the future. To south is where high-density sky rises will be in the future.

Patience is a virtue, too. It looks much more natural than most. looks like you don't have a single grid, like you've placed each individual buidling. Nice.

I was thinking of trying this and bulldozing each building until one grows that I want there, to try to keep the from repeating so much, or to try and make a neighborhood that's all similar houses. Things are so mixed up but then you'll have 4 of the same highrise all in a row.

I have a question; are you guys using the Planet Offer or Single Player mode? I'm assuming the cities with highways in them are Planet Offer...

Yes I've pretty much placed each building down. I use the trizone or w/e it's called for ending streets (a la cul-de-sac) sometimes.

Also.  No need to repeat bulldoze: Under options there's a toggle (not at game atm so don't recall exact wording) for turning on zoning/individual placement. Enable this and you get a new icon beneath the bulldozer (looks like a gear) that lets you place whichever building you want. Strangely not for retail though.

@Panther: I'm personally just playing solo mode atm.  Won't pony up for PO until (or unless) they offer more to make it worthwhile.  You can get highways in solo play though, unlocks at 500k pop.

Right now, there is very little that separates solo mode with the planet offer in terms of content provided.  The only difference is pretty much trading, blueprints, and the ability to go into other people's cities (but my city IS in Planet Offer...on Prospero, in case anyone cares to know 2.gif ).

Not a true cul-de-sac, more like what we often call a close in London (probably else where in the UK at least too) ie. a road going off of another to a roundabout that goes nowhere, commonly with a green in the middle.  There's loads near where I live;

Probably CXL needs more buildings and tools, but its 3d engine is one of the best (for now).

I loved this game so much I thought I would join simtropolis and show some pics of my city in the day and night. I only play SP, love the music and don't mind the lack of city sounds since I usually would mute it in favor of the music. I am abit peeved at the mass transit not being available to SP but it's still a great game without.

I like my cities to have a high density center, medium density ring around the high dense and light dense surrounding the entire thing. This city has a population of 700k and very little industry and manufacturing, just enought to provide jobs for my unqualified and qualified peeps.

Hope you enjoy.

If you are refering to my pics, yes it was in SP. This was my 4th city and my first to pass 500k pop. I considered my first cities practice runs until I made this one, the city came together so well that I almost don't want to add anymore to it. Last night all I did was touch-ups here and there to improve the cities efficiency and I might check it out again tonight to maybe add a new neighborhood and reach 750k.

Concerning the negativity against SP to be honest I have read almost every post about cities xl on these boards and after playing this game I almost never agree with the complaints(well except for the mass transit issue obviously).

Here is a new pic I thought I would leave out because it's almost the same view as the others but you might enjoy. you can faintly see the big airport at the top right corner of the map behind the city.

Fantastic! Your city looks pretty realistic, just how I would want to make mine. I don't have the game yet so I appreciate being able to see your pics, thanks for posting 'em.

anyways, is it the screenshots or in fact the graphics (lighting etc) that make mountainous terrain look like colored plastic wrap?

Now, this post is going to be a bit of a big 'un. Mods, if you feel it to be too large, feel free to cut it down or edit my pics so they're just links.

CRASTMUTH: The town that keeps trying to assure itself it's not a rip off of San Francisco

The city featured in this post is my city of Crastmuth, on the planet Caliban. With ample farming and a burgeoning heavy industrial sector, backed up by top quality offices and a small but growing hi-tech industry, this small city of 85,000 is a perfect place for living.

First off, the obligatory map views.

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_2.jpg

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_1.jpg

As you can see, my industrial area is in immediate need of a revamp of the roads.

Now onto the pretty stuff.

Here is the view of the city across the bay, from the main road.

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_3.jpg

The Riviera

The beautiful Riviera, where the wealthiest and best citizens live an idyllic existence of pool parties, affairs with their secretaries and sunbathing.

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_4.jpg

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_27.jpg

Arty farty lighting conditions

Well, i think the title speaks for itself. With the right lighting conditions and viewing angles, a city can look stunning.

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_37.jpg

A view from atop the tallest building in town during the evening...

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_39.jpg

And some more fancy pictures

THAT BRIDGE

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_18.jpg

Now, you're probably asking the question, "El Presidente, what is that humongous land-bridge that you, in all your great wisdom, have built?" Well, that is the magnificent Garrard Expressway, designed to cut in half the journey times to the designated Industrial Zone.

Poor people really don't mind the constant sound of traffic above them, i assure you. They in fact, love it.

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_43.jpg

cxl_screenshot_crastmuth_44.jpg

Epilogue

The government of Crastmuth, and great leader El Presidente, thank you for your inquiries and interest in Crastmuth. Have a fantastic day.

Some seriously good screenies there. I play online at the moment but I think the Single player is a little lacklustre compared to SC4, since you have to go with a tiny amount of maps that are available.

Alright a quick few screens showing my City in Phase 1.

The Map I chave chosen is Old Falls, not Terraforming alot to keep the 'natural' look.

Main income will be from Farms ( TACTICLY UTILIZED 2.gif, High Tech and Offices.

Some small amount of tokens generated myself to keep cost low together with a support City currently under development. ( Not sure if I wanna make that support city pretty or just efficient )

Trying to really keep a eye on detail so still alot of little things I want to adjust to make it look better, but now trying to lay down the mian lines of my city 1st.

At this moment I am building a North Suburb with just some high rise.

cxlscreenshotreesecity6.jpg

cxlscreenshotreesecity5.jpg

Main goal for this area is to finish it off with low density area's surrounding it all the way up into the mountains and against the farms.

Also I am currently tinkering what to choose as a highway to be able to keep the traffic under control once that area is finished.

The South part is where the High Density buildings will come, and reachgin the end of the map low Density will be placed to get the downtown feel to it and again natural look.

cxlscreenshotreesecity3.jpg

The Farms will stretch the entire area of fertile area up north, this will generate quite a impressive income when utilizing the +% buildings wise !

And some random screens which should do the telling.  LOADS of plans for each small area still just thought I share some idea's.

Can post dozens of them of cool parts of the city but I'll leave it to those intrested to come visit Reese City on Caliban.

Here is my new city of Springfield, population: 1,000,000.

The downtown core is split by the river with several bridges connecting each side and medium density residential neighbourhoods surrounding the downtown with light density residential surrounding the whole thing. I did not build a lot of industry or manufacturing zoning and instead import most of it to lower polution.

The city is still in developement with several more residential neighborhoods planned to complete the surrounding of the city. It has a wind farm in the hills to supply most of the cities power and a large airport with two smaller airports on opposite sides to provide passengers easy access to the entire city.
