Rail-in-Highway Mod

As I was driving down interstate 980 and highway 24 today, I noticed the integration of BART into the highway. I then thought, why can't we do that easily in SC4? We can use split highways but its a difficult method. Wouldn't it would be a lot easier if there was a puzzle piece based network that did this, with peices for rail to subway and elevated rail to rail? we could run trains down our inter regional highways with ease. I have absolutely no bating talent myself, so I am soliciting the help of Simtropolis. If you think this is a good idea and have skills, I will be happy to have your help!

Well a similar mod already exists in the NAM: Tram in avenue and road. I don't know will there be a point in making a tram in highway too.

I think that saywhatman is not talking about tram but about heavy rail. Something like this in Greece:

I think that it's possible to build it without need to create a new mod. Use Rural Highways...

NAM_RuralHighwayMod.jpg

and build rail inside them. Then you can download and build transitions heavy rail --> subway and heavy rail --> light el rail.

But heavy rails inside Maxis highways will be very cool, especialy for the Maxis elevated highway 2.gif

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." - Frank Zappa

"The wisest men follow their own direction." - Euripides

Try to do this:

1. Drag a stretch of Maxis Highway

2. Then drag a rail over the complete length side that you don't want. You'll have a one-way highway + a railway.

3. Demolish the railway.

4. Repeat Step 1 & 2, but not 3.

5. Voil

Actually, an omnibus guide exists for this sort of thing.

You can find it right here:

Have fun!

hm, interesting! I wasn't aware you could split highways!

One question about it: Does this only work with straight pieces, and how could you bring two split parts back together again?

Actually there's another Omnibus article that shows how to join these together.

Never forget to consult our good friend the omnibus!  3.gif

I am looking for Rail in Road, either HSR or Elevevated Rail in the middle of a HIghway. I do not have any kind of experience assembling lots of this nature, so I would ask you all who create these lots and wonderful pieces that I have used over the last few years, to come up with a solution.

There alredy is a soultion, read the first tutorial that haljackey linked to to make what i showed in my picture. If you follow that tutorial then its easy to do.

Also i would suggest using HSR for it. Its the only network thats as wide as the entire tile. Otherwise you will have holes betwwn the rail and the highways and it will look bad

This all looks great!  But the link to the Omnibus article is broken! 8.gif  Does anyone have an up-to-date link?  Or can someone simply show how to join a split highway back together again?

Also, I agree with Xyloxadoria that the HSR looks best for a rail down the middle.  But are there any transitions from HSR to other types of rail?  I eventually need to get this thing into the subway.

Thanks for the link, VInce. But that still doesn't show how to join elevated highways together after a rail line terminates. I found one tutorial on joining highways, but it applies only to ground highways.

A split highway with rail in the middle is one of the things I want in a future simcity 5. In fact, i am currenlty expirimenting with one for the GLR in the middle of a RHW plus an elevated one in between el-RHW(I will provide a pic later).

Since this topic has come up again, how would you construct a ground highway with overpasses having on and off ramps with a rail down the middle? I can see my way to doing most of this with RHW except for one thing: How would the Sims get from the stations up to the overpass (where either there's a bus stop, or they can walk)? Maybe someone needs to make a little one-tile add-on lot that you can put next to stations (over thae tracks) that would have an elevator and staircase up to the overpass. I bet Xyloxadoria would love to make such a lot, wouldn't you, Xylo?  9.gif

I understand, and I may end up doing that. But what I'd really like to build is a ground highway with median rail, as I'm trying to build the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Dan Ryan expressways in Chicago, all of which are ground highways with rail down the middle.
