To SyFy?

Please.

Sci fi is short for Science Fiction Channel. SyFy is short for what? Soy Frys?

Another nail in the coffin of literacy

Edit:

http://www.syfy.com/press.html

reading the press release looks like the just wanted a Trademarkable Logo.

Couldnt they have trademarked the SciFi Logo?

I didn't know the channel existed. I can see why some people might not like it, but in the grand scheme of things, they're just re-branding themselves.

umm exscueame what???? Its SCIFI for a reason and what the frack is up with SYFY that has nothing to do with SCIence FIcition...

BTW I just read the articale and OMG its sad just sooo very sad!!! So now what is SYFY going to do now without BSG??? That would be a good question till Caprica comes out next year or even till the View comes out in the fall where it shows from the cylons pov...

Yes, but they couldn't have trademarked the name "Sci Fi". By making it "SyFy", now it's personalized; something that's solely theirs. I completely understand the business reason for wanting to do that, but the new name is stupid.

Still, content is a million times more important than the name, so as long as they keep showing what they've been showing, it's not really an issue.

Discovery ditching Discovery Home in favor of "Planet Green", now that was cosmically stupid.

Sort of as a joke, I've been saying SyFy like See Fee, rather than Sci-Fi.

I can't understand their logic of changing the spelling is somehow going to improve something, which is even more ridiculous since they're going to just make more programming that fits the original channel...which seems to negate the purpose of the rebranding.

It doesn't really matter one way or another. SyFy actually looks better then SciFi, to me anyway..

I heard that it's because BSG(and then Caprica) wasn't a "trully" SciFi programme, because it went into different genres as well. So they want the new name to show that while it's based on SciFi there's parts of other genre's in there as well.

But in the UK, the SciFi channel has a lot of rubbish on it, and I think that it would be better to have the Caprica series on a different channel, the same goes for BSG when it was on, even the writers/producers/etc. admitted that on the SciFi channel it limited their audience.

While not everything shown on Sci-Fi (a.k.a. SyFy) really fits into the genre of science fiction, SciFi was a good name for it, and a lot less stupid than SyFy.

Don't you just love how they systematically ruin everything that's even remotely good?quote>

Ah, like Simcity, Star Trek, Star Wars (in 'the Clone Wars')? I've noticed that myself.

Ahh marketing, the last vapid bastion of the dangerously stupid, people who try to make the consumer sound dumb so that companies will never realize that by talking to target consumers they would no longer need to pay the idiots in marketing.

You might think this downward sprial is a trend, but there are some exceptions such as shows like Battlestar, games like Grand Theft Auto, and movies like The Italian Job.

Sometimes sequels/remakes are actually better than the original, but for the most part they are generally crap.

I get the idea of the (ridiculously stupid) name change/rebranding, also. But, to a name that's already in use by another company??? In any event, I think I'll have to call it SeeFee, too. "Y" is generally pronounced 'ee'. So, it makes sense. Also, one wonders why others have poor spelling...well, this is a prime example of it. Stupid.

They could have just said "We're trying to reach a wider demographic by appealing to the lowest common denominator, you know, like 'Fudpuckers' does."

I can't wait to see their versions of Dawg The Bounty Hunter, The Tyra Banks Show, and American Idol. Finally, I'll be able to watch science fiction without feeling like an "Einstein"!

Well they already show wrass'lin. and some reality shows, even one that the winner get a part in the Next Saw ( 7or 8? 2.gif movie * shudder*

    Lowest denominator indeed.

I cheked my DVR BSG was the only sci fi offering i record, beyond watching a ST:NG rerun ever once in a while theres noting for me on the whole station till Caprica starts, Mabey when Santuary and Primevil return for new seasons that will liven up my Sci fi viewing. Dr Who and Torchwood seem to be done, as does Flash Gorden.

Thankfully Reno 911 starts a new season next week.

When it comes down to it, the vast majority of their shows blow. They're a mix between B-Grade movies and fanfiction, and the characters in all of the shows either reflect Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying groups, or characters that D&D players would make up, or people that D&D players would think are cool. All of the group dynamics in those shows are the same as they are in dysfunctional gamer subcultures. There are some well done shows, but even those mainly just appeal to geeks.

The reason why that demographic watches the Sci-Fi Channel is because that's the only demographic that would find those shows appealing.

And plus, "SyFy" will probably be interpreted as some kind of uber-nerdy 1337 sp34k from the internet which will turn off normal viewers more than SciFi.

    I don't get it.

I know they're changing their name, but will SyFy be pronounced "Sci-Fye" or "See-Fee"?

The science fiction station in Canada is called "Space", but they air a lot of content from Sci Fi. I just hope they don't change their name as well.

Now wait just a second there. Episodes 1-3 of Starwars is certainly not ruining, and Battlestar is one of the most awesome series i know. And i've seen the original, remakes are always better because they're made in the newer age. The special effects makes what you see more believable.
