Since EA has re-released the 6 year old City building simulation under the title SimCity 4 Deluxe, Simtropolis has seen a new influx of members to it's forums and world recognized Exchange.

To those new members we say: "Welcome! and enjoy the fruits of our labors."

Who do I refer to when I use the words "we" and "our"? Why it should be obvious that I mean the long standing members who have contributed so much to making Sim City 4 more than what it was when initially released back in 2003. I refer to all the Mod Makers, BAT builders, LOT designers, Artists, thinkers, researchers, and anyone who has had a hand in taking SimCity 4 out of, and beyond the original box conceived by Maxis.

I refer to the BSC, the NAM team, BLaM, NEXIS, CSX, HSRP team, individual designers and the many teams who from trial and ERROR, discovered ways to take the concept presented by Will Wright and give us a way to design and build, not only cities of today, but cities of tomorrow.

Fictional cities, realistic cities, factual and fantastic cities, towns, villages and communities.

How did we do that? We did it by thinking "outside the box". We did it through mutual support. We did it through constructive criticism. We helped each other and allowed each other room to grow. We acknowledged each other's accomplishments and tried our best to guide and assist newcomers with helpful critiques and point them to the knowledge base we labored to create over the past 6 years.

But,(there's always a 'but') with any large influx of potential talent, you have an assortment of trolls, troublemakers, and SNERTs. You get people in the forums who think that their "post count" is a sign of status and think that others will see this as a sign that they are important and should be listened to, or that their "post count" will get them a Custom Member Label, or even a Trixie. They offer advice to other newcomers that is often not very helpful, vague and misleading, or, is nebulous at best. They pan the custom content on the STEX based solely on their own personal preferences and what they think the Sim City experience should be.

Sadly, these people do not read the rules, the advices, or tutorials that many of the old timers have taken the time to research and write for them. In actuality, it is almost comical that these people think that no one has encountered "the problems of abandonment due to commute time" and they have the only solution! Or, feel that dependencies shouldn't exist and embark on campaigns to eradicate anything that refers to the use of them. Or, feel that a certain 3d model doesn't belong on the STEX and should receive bad reviews because it doesn't conform to what they think SimCity 4 experience is about.

To the newcomers, "I welcome you and encourage you to enjoy the work we have done, but, take heed of some the sound advice that I offer you."

1) Read.

That should be it in a nutshell. Read the rules. Read the tutorials. Read the forums. Read the "Readme" files included with the download. Looking for some advice on a particular problem you are having? I suggest that you avail yourself of the "search" functions for the forums and,...of course, read.

Lamentably, I have seen that many of the questions asked in the forums are easily answered by reading the tutorials in the Omnibus. Six years of trial, error, experimentation, and success are completely wasted if you have to answer the same questions over and over and over again. That is why many of us will point or link you to articles in the Omnibus, or relevant discussions in the forums. But you, the new user, will have to read it to find the answer to your question.

2) Keep your personal preferences to yourself.

Understand the STEX categories, ratings and their purpose.

The ratings are:

1=bugged or unusable, 2=serves no purpose, 3=more effort needed, 4=almost there, 5=it's adequate, 6=good work, 7=great work 8=excellent work 9=gorgeous, useful, unique 10=perfect in every way.

The categories are:

3ds model, BAT, Lot, Map, Prop, and Textures.

Keep in mind that the STEX isn't just for individual BAT or 3ds models. It isn't just for Lot files. It isn't just for Map files. It isn just for prop and texture files(dependencies). The STEX is for all of those files.

Also, within the category for BAT, and Lot, are subcategories to further aid your search. For example: Why would some one rate a Science Fiction model categorized as BAT:Fantasy as "serving no purpose"? There's a category for it, and it's in the correct place.

3ds models can be rendered into BAT files or prop file dependencies. Texture files can be used in 3ds models or can be formatted for use as tile textures, which in turn, are used by Lot files. Lot files can contain 3ds model files rendered as BATs or, Prop file dependencies, and Texture file dependencies. Map files are unique to themselves and are traded back and forth by many users.

Back to the ratings list. How does having dependencies relate in the ratings list? It doesn't.  Where does it say "Sim cities is about realistic city building only and Science Fiction models and these types of models or props don't fit."  It doesn't. those are statements of personal preferences.

Many would argue that a "2" would fit that definition, but, in truth, it doesn't. The STEX contains many props and models that have no purpose other than being an inert object used to dress up a Lot. By that  same argument, all prop packages should be given a rating of "2" since they serve no purpose, especially if you don't need or want them. Any object, model, or Lot designed for "SimMars" also "serves no purpose" unless you are building a Mars colony. Or, any Science Fiction based model or prop should be rated a "2" because they serve no purpose, unless you are building a city with a science fiction theme.

So, unless you are basing your rating on you're own "personal preferences", giving a "1" or a "2" in these instances would have to be based on the fact that a STEX submission is truly "bugged and unusable" or really does "serve no purpose". The only way to know that is simple: you must download it and try it out, then rate it against the description given by it's creator. Unfortunately, this means that you have to actually use it in your simulation before giving it a honest rating. Sounds time consuming, doesn't it? So why waste your time and integrity rating a STEX file submission based solely on your personal preferences and the pictures presented by the file's author?

3)Give the dependency debate a rest, it will never, ever be resolved.

If you are new to creating custom content, or have a personal aversion to the use of "dependencies" you should keep in mind that you are a minority, albeit a very vocal minority. The use of dependencies is a very tired debate and the fact is simply this, dependencies are a function of the Sim City 4 file structure.

They will never go away no matter how much you limit what you will or wont download. Nor will they go away based on how you rate other authors who use dependencies. Including caveats in your file submissions about how your stuff never uses dependencies, and never will won't make them go away either, and truly, it has no effect on your download count or popularity. (Most will just rate it on how pretty your STEX picture is, anyway.)

In regards to the aversion of the use of outside dependencies and claims like "...as it should be", these people are just excluding themselves to the 6 years of creative effort that went into the custom content available now and run the serious risk of duplicative and redundant effort,...but hey,...who am I to stand in the way of some one's personal preference and desire to recreating the 3 (or more) gigabytes of high quality custom props and textures that are available to us today. All I can say is that we've been there, and done that. Ho-hum.

Many members will give a negative rating to a STEX file based on the sole fact that it contains "dependencies". Just because a Lot file contains "dependencies" doesn't meant that it "serves no purpose", or is "bugged and unusable", or "needs more effort". ALL Lot files require dependencies.

If you don't believe me, download ILives Reader program, open the Lot file, look at the properties for the LotConfig Exemplar, and see for yourself. In the LotConfig Exemplar, is a list of properties that describes every tile texture, prop, and building model that is required for that Lot to show up correctly in the simulation. As far as the SC4.exe program is concerned, those are the dependencies.

New contributors and those who have an aversion to dependencies should redefine their caveats to "No external dependencies required." If they create a new model, place it on a Lot(it then becomes a dependency), use the generic Maxis textures(a dependency), add a few generic Maxis props(another dependency), and release it with the caveat "No depndencies,...as it should be" aren't being truthful,...however, using the caveat, "No external dependencies required" would be closer to reality.

4) Stop worrying about post counts,...they have little or no meaning here. Consider a person who has hundreds of posts of useless, inane replies will have little or no helpful information to offer you, but, a person who has a lower number of posts and a reputation of giving useful, helpful, or thought provoking replies, may be more helpful or informative to you. It is a time proven fact that you learn more when you listen first and ask questions later, than just blurting out the first thing that comes to mind.

I am sure that there are many clever one liners that illustrate that main point, so, moving on,...

5) Nobody gets a paycheck for this stuff. Keep that in mind when you request some one make a particular model, prop, texture, or Lot for you. More than likely, it won't happen unless you are willing to do the work yourself. You will be more likely to get help doing something for yourself, than constantly badgering some one to do it for you.

Doing the work yourself means exactly that, get the Building Architect Tool, the Lot Editor, The Dat Reader and do it yourself. Read the tutorials and experiment on your own, then ask questions. Posting hundreds of pictures of what you want is not considered doing the work yourself.

6) If you plan on releasing stuff on the STEX and don't want your comment box to fill up with negative comments, consider opening a "support thread".

If people have problems or need further explanations, they should post them there. It's easier for the users to post pictures of the problems they are having in a support thread. A support thread will also enable the more senior members a chance to give detailed analysis and help in a support thread than a comment box.

7) If you have trouble with a particular STEX file, make sure that you have read and understood the description and read me file.

Many times the problems user's have with a STEX file stem from not reading the description and read me.txt given by the author.

Anyway, that's all this cranky cat has to say for now, but I reserve the right to add more as I think of it.

Well written. I must admit, someone does have a CML for her post count... Of 33,000 though. I wish anyone luck at beating that. 3.gif

This thread cannot even be described in words, but is most useful for anyone new or old, maybe now something will change.

Great information here! As for the "4) Stop worrying about post counts" section, I don't know if giving out actual numbers is such a good idea, but a good section it is.

Thanks for adding this NCD! 4.gif

Well, I thought I may as well stick to the rules of your thread, and once I read number 1, read, there was no going back 3.gif

But I have to say that that was simply amazing. It is a honour to go through and read all of this. And I thank you for taking your time to write all of this.

A strange desire to donate something has come over me recently,...curious,...hmm,...oh well, I'm sure it will pass,...or will it?. [ncd makes a mental note to donate something]

un1, SWAT-MEDIC, hamish, thank you for your support. It truly means a lot to me.

I would like to add an addendum to #5, if I may.

5b) Just because you personally find "installer" files on the STEX annoying, does not mean you are a MAJORITY,...you are in the far fringes on that one. We have gone over this before, many years ago, and it was decided that "installer" files are easier for those who aren't sure where custom content should be placed. It guaranties that the file will be placed correctly and will show up in the game provided the dependencies(if any) the file requires are there also.

Giving inappropriate ratings and flaming the author will not make them go away. Never. Ever. Get used to it. Showing petty responses like this only marks you as a petty, small-minded user to the rest of us.

    Moving on,...

    8) Understand the differences between Simtropolis, SC4 Devotion, SimPeg, and other fansites.

Here at Simtropolis, anyone can submit content to the STEX. It's wide open to all members, provided you follow the rules. The best reason for this is simple: It allows potential talent to "test the waters" and break out of "consumer mode" and show their work.

In response, the other members are supposed to rate it fairly and offer constructive criticism. We encourage all types of content.(see #2, in the above post by me) Simtropolis is a place for newcomers to break into the field of SC4 custom content and measure their work against others, but it is NOT a place for spam posts, showing how clever we are by badmouthing others, enforcing our personal preferences, or other general SNERT type behavior.

In contrast, SC4 Devotion and SimPeg are places where many senior SimCity 4 fans have gathered after years of work here at Simtropolis to release their own high quality and/or genre specifc custom content. SC4 Devotion is the home of the NAM team and the BAT Squad Certification team, while SimPeg is known for it's Coastal Development Kits, Mountain Theme Packs, and high quality unique content. Keep in mind that they frequently release their stuff here as well.

They do not have open exchanges on their sites for a reason. You have to petition them to get on their exchanges, and that is definitely not easy to do, again, for good reason. They have reputations for providing high quality content, and you really got to know your stuff to get released there. Elitist? Maybe so, maybe not, just keep it firmly in your mind that they worked hard to get where they are today and deserve the reputations of quality and reliability that they have earned.

Want to get in on those teams? Don't screw up here. Read everything you can here,...then read their tutorials,...get the Lot Editor, and iLive Reader, and Building Architect Tool and experiment away. Ask relevant questions. Release some stuff here,...pay attention to what the senior members advise you,...and maybe, just maybe,...a senior member there might ask you to join one of their teams.

Does this mean that Simtropolis is just for amateurs? No, definitely not. You may find that the other fansites mentioned above aren't your cup of tea, or you have your own ideas and interests about which direction you want to go in. Simtropolis is an OPEN forum not just for custom content, but for playing the game, showcasing your cities and other stuff, or just plain socializing,...POLITELY.

Keep this firmly in mind, many of the members of the other fansites are also members here. Word will definitely get around,...where do you want your words to end up?

But ,being a SNERT here, bashing other peoples work based on your own personal preferences, making demands or giving ultimatums, or just generally making trouble for the other members here, will certainly get you noticed in a way that you don't want to get noticed in.

Now for some examples of what not to do:

Check out the comment section for this STEX submission, then read advice in #2 above.

    https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=21130

Now this model isn't glamorous or visually stunning,...c'mon it's a freakin' Space Freighter, it's not supposed to be,...and it's filed under BAT:Fantasy,...correct,...it's for use in Science Fiction  theme based cities,...granted, a niche market,...but hey, there is a thread title here called "Show us your Spaceports",...so it fits.

Then notice the responses from jds01923, LN, danner, jthono, pssteph, camtheman499, and dslmagic.

Next example is a BAT and Lot from a senior member known for extremely high quality, sometimes whimsical work. He left Simtropolis because of all the rude behavior a couple years ago,...

    https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=21117

Way to welcome him back, simathome, USA Patriot, kendiecasttsoi

You guys have introduced yourselves to the world community in a grand fashion here. Which brings up another bit of advice.

    9) You are on a World Stage.

That's right, the world. Simtropolis is known in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Africa, South America, Europe, Great Britain, Canada, and the USA. When you act stupid here in front of your buds, the whole world gets to see what an arse you truly are. Don't care? We do, and you won't be staying,...at least, not for very long.

The flip side to the world stage is this, not everyone in the world speaks English! Be polite to the non-english speaking members and please, please, try to remember that some things like similes, homilies or, innuendo don't translate well into other languages. Be patient with non-english speaking people. You'd be surprised at what "Babelfish" translates some of your remarks into.

A side note: when speaking with some one who's native tongue is not english, use a dictionary once in a while, and paragraphs, and some grammar wouldn't hurt either. Many people don't speak the language at all and rely on a translator site, which doesn't work with misspelled words. Using paragraphs instead of "text walls" also helps.

Just some more friendly advice from the "varmint"

    Peace!

    Hello everyone.

Today i just found out that my beloved SC4 rush hour ,a game that i have and play each year since 2004 ,has lo's ,mod's ,dependecies and all that new ,great ,glamorous stuff. I am aware now that almost all good games have a thriving ,inspired and dedicated comunity that looks for ways of making it a better experience.

So ,i am a *****. I play Sim City since the 90's ,had hundred of hourplay in SC2000 ,SC3000 and now SC4 ,but never the wa you people play. Ths new and interesting face of SC4 made me feel like a child in a candy shop.....

NOW ,after i read all posted above i just wanted to try and disclaim some of the people named by the author ,because i find myself in the very-same position.

I wasted 5 hours today trying to understand how this works. They were hundreds of good looking mod's and textures and mostly all needed some dependency list. I have a 100 MB/second connection ,so this is not a problem ,but chosing what to download ,where to download ,where to find it ,and what to do ,drven me nuts!

I am a doctor ,not a programmer ,and not a student....so my time is limited. I preffer to develop a region in 1-2 hours/day than spendng 40-60 minutes to find and download the dependency list that a nice pair of german houses need to have in order to appear in my city.

So ,OLD ONES.....remember that this game is for all ,and all are maybe stupid...or not english primary....,or just not that kind of addictive person so in order to pursuit a mod until it actually works....

I looked at some MD's and saw some beautyfull work......and i wanted to do some of that too. But now ,after so much wasted time....i think i will get back to my original MAXIS SC4 because of all dependenyes and never ending lists of prop's and whatever..

Put yourself n the shoes of that child in the candyshop that is let to take everything in the store for free ,but finds out is harder that even buyng the stuff.....just see it like that ,and maybe you will understand why some users are frustrated

Welcome to Simtropolis! Thank You for taking the time to read my suggestions!

But, I must point out a couple of misunderstandings in your posted comment.

    1. While I understand your frustration in dealing with "dependencies" under the circumstances you have outlined, it still doesn't make them(dependencies) go away. They exist. They are integral to the custom content available.

When I first started with Sim City 4, I too, found files with dependencies frustrating and avoided them. I don't have a fast connection to the internet and the file sizes often put me off. Then I began to create my own designs and wanted to communicate a new idea to the community,...but I had to use dependent files,...I needed those dependent files.

So, to make a long story short, I got used to them. The more I learned about the inner workings of the Sim City 4 graphics engine, the more I realized that dependent files exist within the framework of the software itself,...without downloading a single thing! The game engine was designed to use dependencies!

It then became apparent to me that dependencies are also a way of distributing very large amounts of modification data in a modular format that lets the users pick and choose what modifications they want to install. The only drawback was getting all of the files needed to make a modification work took a litlle time (especially for a 56k dial up user).

But, once the dependent files began to accumulate on my hard drive, I realized that it took less time for me to get the modifications that appeared on the exchanges to work properly,....because I already had the required dependents!

Later, to avoid the dependent issue completely, I spent some time on another computer's DSL connection and downloaded every dependent file I could find on all the exchanges and burned them to a DVD. I then loaded the most commonly used dependent files to my hardrive. This took me about 1-2 hours, and I never had to worry about it again.

Now, when I see a new file on any of the exchanges, I rarely have to search for, or download a dependency. I just read the description of the file, and it's associated "read me" file, and make sure that I have the dependencies needed,...it just takes a few minutes to install a set of houses, or a transit network mod, or a certain commercial building.

... i just wanted to try and disclaim some of the people named by the author ,because i find myself in the very-same position....quote>

    2. In the numbered suggestions I gave (#2 and #3), I only ask that a bad rating not be given to a person's contributions to the exchange based solely on the rater's personal preference regarding dependencies. Dependencies exist to be used in exactly they manner they are being used for, therefore, a contributor cannot and should not be given a bad rating for folowing the rules.

    3. The people I named in the examples I had given were not talking about dependencies! The examples were given about inappropriate comments on the exchange and how to use the rating system fairly. See here:

Check out the comment section for this STEX submission, then read advice in #2 above.

    https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=21130

Now this model isn't glamorous or visually stunning,...c'mon it's a freakin' Space Freighter, it's not supposed to be,...and it's filed under BAT:Fantasy,...correct,...it's for use in Science Fiction theme based cities,...granted, a niche market,...but hey, there is a thread title here called "Show us your Spaceports",...so it fits.

Then notice the responses from jds01923, LN, danner, jthono, pssteph, camtheman499, and dslmagic.quote>

No discussion about dependencies there. The commenters just didn't like the fact that Spaceships can be posted to the STEX.

Next example is a BAT and Lot from a senior member known for extremely high quality, sometimes whimsical work. He left Simtropolis because of all the rude behavior a couple years ago,...

    https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=21117

Way to welcome him back, simathome, USA Patriot, kendiecasttsoi.quote>

Again, no discussion about dependencies in those comments. Those people were being rude to a well established contributor who left for exactly the reason why he stopped contributing to the STEX in the first place,...kinda like me.

There is no defense for the behavior those commentors have shown, none.

So ,OLD ONES.....remember that this game is for all ,and all are maybe stupid...or not english primary....,or just not that kind of addictive person so in order to pursuit a mod until it actually works....quote>

    4. We "old ones" do realize that. The article is not about not having frustration, but how it is expressed. Being frustrated with the complexity that this franchise has become is quite normal. But expressing it in a rude and childish manner will get a user no place. That is what the article is about.

We "OLD ONES" will often bend over backwards to help any one who asks for help, but, the moderators and administrators will promptly ban some one who behaves rudely,...just as a child in a candy store who throws a tantrum because they can not have what they want, will be promptly removed from the candy store by the parent.

...I looked at some MD's and saw some beautyfull work......and i wanted to do some of that too. But now ,after so much wasted time....i think i will get back to my original MAXIS SC4 because of all dependenyes and never ending lists of prop's and whatever..quote>

Well, that is your choice, but if you really wanted to make a city using some of the custom content available, it will take some time. The content is free, but your time may not be.

Expecting to create instant beauty is not a realistic view of what is in those MD's. It took those authors a lot of thier spare time to create those beautiful cities. Consider that it would take many 1-2 hour sessions to duplicate what many of them have created using the custom content they spent time searching out and installing.

Put yourself n the shoes of that child in the candyshop that is let to take everything in the store for free ,but finds out is harder that even buyng the stuff.....just see it like that ,and maybe you will understand why some users are frustrated.quote>

No, I will not put myself there. Children are taught that nothing in life is free. They are also taught that tantrums and rude behavior will not be tolerated. They are taught that if they ask for help politely, it will be given. Those simple rules apply here.

Again, while the custom content is free to download and use privately, there is a cost and a string attached: It costs you time to research and learn what you are doing, and the custom content can not be redistributed as your own creation.

Being frustrated and overwhelmed by the large amount of custom content is quite human. But, expressing that frustration in a rude or inappropriate manner will not be tolerated here.

That is what the article I wrote is about.

Ooooooo, the burning Quake symbol,...I like it. So I see you are also a Quake fan? very cool,...I am a fan of Quake4 and Half Life 2,...and in that genre, I am a complete newcomer,..although, I've learned a few tactics from playing the HL2 mods,...like picking up a live grenade and throwing it back, using short bursts rather than full auto, and that retreat and regroup is sometimes the best tactic.

    Peace and welcome to Simtrop!

Wow I should have posted here a week ago! From what I see so far, I don't see external dependencies themselves as a bad thing, but the uploader should definitely include links to them either in the description or the read me and should at least list them in the description (as the vast majority of uploaders both here and on sc4devotion in fact do.)

Hello MattShizzle ! Welcome to Simtropolis 4.gif.

Yes actually it's more of a requirment for the

Uploader to include the dependencies Needed.

The Lot/BAT will not work properly without them.

Oh and if you havn't already checked out the Omnibus

you might want to . It has plenty of information regarding

all of your Simtropolis and Sim City 4 Questions. And if

you ever need someone to ask a question to . Always

feel free to Private Message Me ...I'll be more than willing

    to help.

    All the Best 1.gif

    Sincerely,

    Duke of York

New like a newborn. Site looks well put together. Stex is nice to, but people are not the nicest there. hard to find my way around but I will. Seems like I might need permission to ask a question though, looks like everything is covered but I don't know where to start lol.

Um, yes, I see that, "joined 39 minutes ago", Greetings and Salutations! Start with the Omnibus, it is chock full of useful info going way back to the begining.

As for the STEX comments, I'd have to agree, they are not friendly in general. The reason is that too many of the immature use it as a kind of "tweeter", my advice, ignore all comments in the STEX,...in general.

Best advice is the Omnibus, followed closely by the forums. The STEX primary function is "file downloads".

    Peace!

Had fun playing the basic game and building big featureless cities and now gearing up to make my masterpiece. Hope you don't mind me asking the odd stupid question from time to time and thanks in advance for the excelellent downloads on the STEX, hope to add some of my own at some point.
