Update 4: While waiting for my experiment to complete, I moved onto other areas of the city. The Bankside Parcel: A highrise, intermixed Residential and Commercial area, it's the perfect transition from uptown to the new Downtown. Some spaces have been left open for new parks or buildings. Just east of it: Same thing as the last parcel, except the commercial buildings are placed closer to the residential buildings. Just north: A more apartment-like community. It's upper class, and I'll work on more detailed decoration at a later time. For now, dense trees work just fine for me. As a native Sacramentan, the urban canopy is a must. The whole thing: With my next update, I'll start moving into the downtown area.

Update 3: I was doing some research into the best types of intersections (to fix the previous update's traffic), when I came across a TEDx Talk by a gentleman named Jeff Speck. What I found interesting, fundamentally, was that simple aspects of road layouts (and zoning) create some countrywide effects. However, only so much can be done in a city simulator. Surely the speed of a vehicle ingame isn't influenced by the width of, number of trees on, or the bike lanes on the road. So, I've opted for a more realistic experiment. To check if small streets influence the level of traffic. To check if mixed zoning is more efficient (The metric being length of commute) than typical American zoning (AKA sprawl). This is the experiment so far (it's not completely zoned yet): Satellite: Zoning: Traffic Routes: I'll run this experiment for about a day or so, see how it goes. If it works well, then I'll use the same principles shown here to build and zone a downtown area.

Update 2: In Eddington, there exists two central industrial areas: 1: Near old town. It's well connected and designed, with minimal traffic. 2. Surrounding the Port. It's, as one reddit user put it, "too well connected.' Before the rework: After a reddit thread, several constructive comments, and many hours of trial and error later: (The traffic in the lower-left corner self-regulates; it ebbs and flows with every train that arrives at the station) What changed: Removed one cargo port and freight station. Removed direct connection between the ports and the rest of the industrial area. Replaced major intersections with two-lane roundabouts. Reworked the layouts of the industrial 'neighborhoods' so that there is one in and out connection each. Moved the existing train stations away from the major arteries so that trucks bearing imports/exports don't clog traffic. Removed industry that faced the major arteries. So, the lesson learned: When in doubt, use a roundabout.

Update 1: I'm not satisfied with the current location of downtown. 1. It's landlocked, with little room for trade. 2. It's surrounded by a small district of 20,000 people. 3. It was an experimental build. It did not take into account its surroundings nor any other lessons I may have learned since its construction. The Present Location: As you can see, this new downtown area is right next to the Borus River. This opens the city up for both trade routes and waterfront property, both of which will increase revenue and business. Also, i'm horrible at giving cities an 'organic' look to them (I prefer a city-block style), so the river gives me the illusion of fluidity. Heh. Drawing Major Throughways: Of course, the downtown will have roads. They're necessary for people to actually get there and have a feasible alternative to public transport (plus emergency services - I don't need an army of garbagemen to swarm the area to take care of garbage). I'll work on the smaller streets in a bit. I'm unsure of how much commerce will take place here, so I must build the means for it to begin: industry. The New New Port: I've begun construction of the basic shape. Sea walls are a major bitch to construct, I gotta say, so i'll probably just procrastinate doing them. Lol. The Canals: When I was a senior in high school, my family and I traveled to our ancestral homeland, Germany. Now don't get me wrong, Germany is a beautiful land (especially in winter), but when we stopped in Amsterdam, I was just blown away by the intricacy and beauty of the city. The canals, compact buildings, tiny shops, and weed cafes really captivated me. Someday, maybe as a foreign exchange student, I'll go back again. In honor of that city that will never leave my memory, I'm dedicating this downtown area to be Amerstdam-esque, with a humble dose of America. This is going to be the end of this entry. I'll add more (and edit the road layout) tomorrow. Thank you.

Hello everyone, this is my favorite WIP city: Eddington! Some people use Cities Skylines as it was intended - a city simulator; others use it less as a city simulator and more as a city painter; still others try to find a medium between the two. I fall under that third category. My goal in this series is to make my city while still preserving the potential beauty of the game. Bearing this in mind, here is what I have so far: Old Town: The Old Industrial District has long been past its golden era - most businesses closed down and set up shop in the new Harbor area. Some speculate that residential development nearby would spur regrowth in the area. The new Harbor: Sometime during the 2040's a major health epidemic spread across the city. Hundreds fleed the city, thousands died, and a proportional amount of businesses followed suit. The distinctly patchy industrial buildings on the Southern (top) part of the Harbor is a scar from that time. The Low Income District: The Suburbs: I have subdivided these regions into large squares or 'Parcels' of 120 units by 120 units. Intended to be used like a census, each parcel gives me important information, particularly the general areas of unemployment. Now, we move across the Borus River to Little Catalonia (or as 'Little Eddalonia,' to locals): Little Brooklyn: The blank area in the top left is an unfinished park. I'll get to it, I swear. The Financial District: I had been toying around with the idea of building a 'downtown' area that favors pedestrians rather than roads when I built this. The experiment went well. Despite employing 3.6 thousand people in an extremely dense area, it has some of the best traffic in the city. The Water Treatment Plant: The first structure built in the city, it still functions to this day and supplies 1.6 million cubic meters of clean water to the city every week. And that is pretty much what I have so far. Thank you for reading.

It's been a while, and I come back to hear our dear A Nonny Moose has fallen ill?! Sheesh. I hope he gets better. Cancer is no joke, my mother had breast cancer and was under treatment for a year. It's real tough, and she was only 38 at the time. She's clean now (hopefully, you really never know for 100% certain), but her hair is still growing back. Barkeep, can I have a Shirley Temple? Might get back into SC4 but im starting college in a few days here, and with a new job (plus starting out as a freelance trumpet instructor) my time is certainly limited. Money really does seem to make the world go round - college is robbery and insurance is high. Any advice for an 18 year old? -

The Moose Factory - Virtual Bar and Grill - Version 3

Wow, I've never seen so many different programming languages in one sentence... I am only a novice in C++, and I have only read one book on it (the book is 800 and some odd pages long). Regarding Prince Charles, i wish him a happy birthday. Him passing his pension to needy seniors is extremely generous. On a side note, he is the same age as one of my grandfathers! I don't really have anything more to say... -
Nope! Mr Saturn64 is next?

78 Well, i dont have anything interesting to say, so here's something i'll bet you didn't know: 782 is 6084. did... did i do it right?
