I first started plying SimCity almost 10 years ago with SimCity 3000 Unlimited (which it was very limited compared to SC4). But one thing I loved in SC3000 was the disasters. They just seemed so much more intense. You could have whirlpools wreck havock on you're see ports and brigdes, locuts destroy crops, fires that actually turned into fire storms, and of course, my favorite, were the riots. I loved unleashing 3 or 4 riots in my city. IT was great. One thing that bugs me now though is that I can't do that anymore. Does anyone else miss that too? I think it would look great with the graphics the way they are. You could do UDI mission and break it up (and I know there's the strike one for the mayor but comeon, that's not a riot). Just seems like it would be a whole deal of fun.

I've never had a random disaster in SC4, do they actually happen?

Hi, jezus,

One time I was just playing away on a rather rural city, with some suburban development.  Everything was fine.  I plopped the mayor's house.  I had always thought the default mayor's house looked kinda lame, so I had covered it up with a prop family of Simgoober houses in Lot Editor.  And it actually let me save it, so it replaced my old lot.  Well, as soon as I plopped it, my mayor rating plummeted, and all the sims in this one development began rioting.  They rioted on and on, for a good hour, real time.  I couldn't do anything else, except keep plopping police stations, but they kept rioting.  There were police cordons all over the place.  They burned their whole development to the ground.  If you miss the riots, you would have enjoyed it immensely.  I've never seen anything like it.  Finally, they stopped, after everything was gone.  Who knows what triggered it.  Was it the nicer mayor house?  Maybe. 41.gif

Have fun.

Lol, good job Liv, your extravagant uses of city funds sent them over the rope! Lol, I'd like to see that happen.

If  you don't have adequate fire coverage (which means a fire station actually in a neighborhood) there will be fires.  Oh, and if you're Livin in Sim you get some wicked awesome riots.   I can't say I've experienced anything else, though.

I love it when the rioters start jumping on the hoods of cars and flipping them over! Also I saw that if you don't fund the police well you will see them fall to the ground as they try to fight.

As a side note, I wish there was a flood disaster like in SC2000. That would be amazing.

Wow! Maybe its because you're mayor rating was in the red? But I don't know how building the house would do that since the town offers you the house plus it says the sims want to live near you. I might try that though...I really miss the riots. And I wish that there were more random disasters like earthquakes and tornadoes because I usually get bored after a while. It's always fun trying to rebuild...well, not in real life of course.

And I would also love to have some floods goin on too.

Sometimes it gives me that "No riots for 5 years" message, but I've never actually had one. I'm gonna try to make my sims riot now that we're discussing it. I have had random fires, however. They won't happen if your fire protection is good. I've intentionally set fires before but they lasted about ten seconds because fire protection was good, although the firemen didn't even come.

Yeah, later on I read that you shouldn't really mess with rewards in LE, because it could mess up their effects.  It's hard to figure how that would happen, since you're just editing the lot, but maybe it it did.  Meanwhile, I'm still playing with this pimped up mayor's house.  It looks much better, but I suppose I would have to reinstall to get the total default now.  Taking the house prop family off might screw with it even more.  So far it hasn't caused anymore riots, and I've used it a lot.  Maybe the conditions were just right.  BTW, my mayor rating was high until I plopped the house.

    Bye for now.

Weird stuff. Well, there is just so much code going through these machines that any small error could cause anything to happen! One reason why I still don't trust technology to handle a lot of things. Example, my car. I do not want a computer in it, I just want the engine and brakes let's go.

Thanks for that info though Livin in Sim. I'm really tempted to unleash havoc upon my sims. hehehe, I feel as giddy as a school girl!!! 17.gif

I wound up with my first riot the other day.  I was throwing together a test city to see if I could get some SimGoober buildings to grow.  They were the NIMBY "adult" lots (you also need the models to avoid brown boxes).  They grew like crazy because I hadn't put down any schools, so the residents were only qualified for low-wealth jobs.  Before I knew it, their cumulative effects had driven my mayor rating into the negative.  With no water, schools, hospitals, parks, fire station,  or even a police station, it wasn't long before several blocks were a tumult of angry sims milling about in mobs, jumping up & down, and flipping cars!  I had to plop the ModdSquad safety tower (cheat building) and dispatch cops everywhere to quiet things down.  After reading Liv's post, I feel like trying it again and just letting them go to see how much of the city they burn down!

I have been trying for the past 2 hours to get a riot and I can't. I have a mayor rating of I think -30 (I have 5 red bars on the mayor rating thing) and I have nothing but power and water (water to maintain the high rises I have). Any ideas on how I can get this city to be a bigger slum? I have 3 coal plants in the city center (hehehe) and a bunch of dirty industry built in it. I even replaced every road with streets. No highways, avenues, nothing. Only streets and for some reason I still have maxed out green traffic on the city data view thing. Weird. I'm still working on it but anyone have any ideas?

Get some business deals like the prison and place them next to the houses. Light the place on fire (but don't burn it down). Fire is a great mayor rating depressor. Keep doing this until you get a riot.

Also, make sure to set the "# of sims / cars displayed" setting in the settings menu to high, and take some pictures 4.gif

It 's too late. While I was on the board looking around for cool things I forgot the game ran in the background. I am sad to report that my city went from 40-60k (it fluctuated a lot in these "agonizing" times) to no more than 3k. Plus, my mayor rating went to neutral and my industry district was completely burned to the ground. But hey, I made a sweet profit of the city. A 4mil profit to be precise. hehehe. Needless to say, I demolished everything, cleaned up all of the garbage and let all the pollution disappear and I am now beginning to plan my next great city. I'll try again with a smaller city. I'll definitely post some pics of it though. I might even record it too...interesting...

Anyways, thanks for the ideas. You'll hear from me again on this.

I enjoyed this riot thread so much, I had to bump it.  11.gif  Sorry about your city, Jezus.  No, really, I am.  29.gif  I was messing around on the STEX looking for something totally else, and guess what I saw?  A Lotsa Riots Mod!  It was there all the time!  And I see some of the Clueless have even rated it low.  20.gif  Merry Christmas a little early, Jezus.  Hmmm, that sounded weird...41.gif

I have never been unpopular enough to have riots, but I saw one in a trailer

Thanks a lot Livin in Sim! Don't worry about the city, I was rushing when I built it so it was horribly laid out. Thanks for the concern and thank you so much the mod. I can't wait to impliment this.

I'm gonna use this riot mod tonight! I missed them too.

Apparently I'm always being warned that a riot will occur if I don't build a jail, but that's never happened. Sometimes, I get so sad I just dispatch the police to get them in action! I like them barricading the street for no reason.

Actually, I find it sort of difficult to have a low mayor rating and have a city that's functional at all. It's kinda lame that in SC4 you need to do crazy stuff like cut off the water and put a coal power plant in the backyard before anyone cares, where in real live people will protest if you move the bus stop down the street.

I've only had a riot once or twice in my time playing SC4, and I do miss the ability to spawn them like in SC3000 Unlimited. Some of the other disasters were good too, and I'd easily take the ability to spawn a whirlpool over a giant robot. I wish course, SC4 had the newspaper that would come up after a disaster in SC2000. The numbers given were unbelievable (several thousand dead in tornado/air disaster/whatever but only a few hundred thousand in damage), but it was still a nice funny touch.

I think it was Sim City 2000, but I miss the Warning Horn. You could sound it to warn people of an impending disaster, and ofcourse, I liked to do it when there was no disaster. The people freak out, and everyone would run into their homes.

In SC4, the only random disaster is fire. It's pretty lame and unrealistic since every year there are several big tornadoes in the midwest, several hurricanes in the south, a big earth quake every 10-15 years on the west coast, and heavy flooding and weather everywhere! There are no robots so they need to take both out and replace them with riots and the whirlpool.

Had my first one in SC4 today. Sims on an island wouldn't catch the ferry to work, so high unemployment on the island. It was difficult to stop though. I had to flood the island with Police stations.

Yeah, that was SC3000. It was kinda odd, however, the warning system. Knowing 3 months before :-p

yeah i miss riots heaps as well, (as has already been said it would be awesome if somebody could come up with something that would trigger them, but not so permanent as the lots of riots mod)

and as others have said the "fire storms", especially the fires in SC2000, they were awesome, like fires could actually be a challenge then, i remember some of the scenarios in SC2000, where there were like massive fire-storms u had to put out, and forest fires and stuff.... i wish u could have forest fires in SC4 as well,

guess i wish somebody could make a mod or something to enable good forest fires, and also to i guess increase like the intensity of fires, so they can spread easily and r harder to put out, but i dunno if thats even possible....

of and the plane crash from SC2000 was awesome as well 4.gif

I was just curious if you where sure of that Jezus,  I had SC4 without the rushhour expansion pack for a long time, Probably since it came out or so .And I've actually had two other disasters occur without my prompting them, long ago when i first started playing i had a quake rip right through my city caused a little ground deformation and everything. And the second one I've never been 100 percent sure of It was either a meteorite or a missile from the missile base that crashed back down. In both instances I was just busy building when they occurred. I'll also add That nothing of this sort Has ever happened after I got the rush hour version earlier this Year. However I haven't even come close to as many hours at the mayor mode console yet........Oh yeah I too miss the riots from 3000
