WOW thats tall. That might take another year or maybe 6 months to finish that off, but even if the building is finished, there sill has to be things done to it before it can open.

well when i said finished i actually meant structurally as in with the spire up bu yeah it should take until about next november before the interior is finished but the armani hotel is due to open next september.

As for who will use it well, some lower floors will be taen up by the armani hotel, some will be residential, there will be around five observation decks, and most floor including all the top 40 orso will be office space and that is what emaar are having trouble selling, the top floor is still available so if anyone has a spare $60,000,000 or so give them a ring

...equally amazing is the fact that there's at least 19 cranes in that picture. That's a whole lot of construction.

Been waiting for a while. Looks amazing. This might be a stupid question but do you think general public can get up there for a look and if so where. I'm guessing not to the very top

    My thoughts on it:

    Eeeehhhhhhhh...

I don't see the appeal of it. Sure, it's tall, but it's rather hideous looking.

I preferred it when they would try and make towers both tall and good looking, like the Empire State Building.

This just looks like a metal and glass spike. It almost looks like something the Combine might build.

    It looks unfinished.

...mmm, it is a little dull for the world's tallest building, and extremely dull by Dubai's standards... but I think that reasonable options become limited when you deal with a building this tall. And considering that, I think the soft blue color of the shell is pleasing. In the past, a building this tall seemed impractical b/c it would seem out of place in a typical city environment, mainly due to its height. But Dubai will continue to build big, and the city will develope around this landmark. Regardelss of one's opinion of the aesthetics and design of Burj Dubai, it is still a milestone of architecture and that fact alone is enough to get my attention. I have always had a list in my head of tall buildings I would like to one day find myself on the top of... and this is certainly on that list. I can't wait for it to be finished.

I think there is nothing wrong at all with the building itself. Absurdity of it's location is the only thing that a little bothers me. On the other hand there always have to be a beginning...

"extremely dull by Dubai Standards" - I would consider it to be a compliment... Dubai Standards - it is something like 5 YO would normally do...

so ladies and gentlemen some of you seem to want to know how high you can go the tallest observation deck currently planned is on the 128th floor

Now I accept that many people see this as ugly but just look at the number of responses this has got in a few hours, it is just one big step in raising dubais image

I wouldn't call it hideous, just unappealing (and overrated.) It looks like something you'd see in a sci-fi comic book. You have to admit, its height is its only appeal. The minute something taller is built, it's going to go the way of the Sears Tower, becoming just another tall building/tourist trap.

BTW: Architecture, urbanism & planning forum?

Supertall overstyling is almost like a new International Style, in this case focused on emerging rocket economies.

What would have been really cool is if Dubai had opted to build Norman Foster's conical Tokyo Millenium Tower.  Though originally offered for Tokyo, its exterior bracing pattern seems oddly reminicent of minaret decorative patterns, and its pure conical form would certainly have stood out among Dubai's many bizarre creations, and truly would have looked like a Wonder of the World.

Let us also not forget the finger-like, Gensler-designed Shanghai Tower, an almost erotic twisting supertower.

such enthusiastic replies there well done people

every skyscraper must endure critics and hard times, for example plug "empty state building" into google or something and see how close the empire state building cam to be new yorks biggest failure

the burj dubai is an important symbol of hope and human accomplishment in these hard times and will be a beacon unto the future
