Here's a fishing village in a lake. What do you think??

A little too small for a lake huh?

I'd say it's a fishing pond.

And I'd say this is about as small as a small town can get.

There are many of these fish-rearing ponds in the countryside.

In the 19th century, villages like these dotted the exurbs of New Orleans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Malo,_Louisiana. None now survive, sadly, although they have served as an inspiration for my region in many ways.

Time flies. The America has been reshaped by (sub)urbanization. Looking forward to your updates.

Okay. I'll fish around for some stuff to post, hopefully to this thread.

Here's another one:

Welcome to Moroder, South Tyrol, Italy.

Named after the South Tyrolean composer Giorgio Moroder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Moroder), Moroder is a fictional town in the very real Italian province of South Tyrol. If Moroder were real, its predominant language would most likely be German, followed by Italian and Ladin, and its main exports would likely include wine.

A 4-lane bypass around the town might possibly be good for intercity traffic. Then the town center can still be preserved.

Last of the small towns and cities for a while. The next place I'm working on will have a population of around 200,000.

It looks nice, although in a realistic point of view, the downtown area is a little to big for the surounding town

I agree that the downtown is a little too big but Sim City 4 isn't always realistic.

The downtown was originally only half the size with only a couple of buildings over 4 floors but I was getting no jobs zots all over the place. I changed some streets to roads and made a by-pass of the town then I put in a commuter rail station and added bus stops but I was still getting no job zots.

The population at the time was only about 1,000 less sims than it was in the pictures. To fix the no job zot problem I got rid of some houses and expanded downtown north and west and made some medium density zones. After all the zones were finished developing the no job zots finally disappeared.

I hate the abandon because of long commute because it is not realistic thing (at least in Canada and the United States). Their work was usually only two blocks from their house and the roads were all green since traffic was moving smoothly but still the houses would abandon. I wish there was a mod to take out the abandon because of a long commute because that is the biggest factor that affects making realistic looking cities for me.

You are suppose to have a 2:1 ratio of sims to jobs but I find you need 1.5 jobs for every sim to get rid of the no job zots.

The reason for this is that in the game, a single family house often has an unrealistically-high amount of occupants. Often it is something like 8 to ten when really it should be no more than four or five IMO. Not everyone has a ton of kids!

Lots of canals and continuous botanical barriers here in Watertown. Next task is to expand to the islands in the inlet.

This highly secure urban farm recently launched operations in Watertown.

Did I mention that Watertown is located in Washington State? 0:)

Another, more compact operation has opened up across town:

Assuming that's MJ, the overwhelming smell of that stuff would likely drive people out of their apartments in no time. :D

A bunch of pictures of two villages on the same (large) city tile. Not completely finished, as I'm frequently too lazy to place MMP's (especially along the shoreline, this is BTW supposed to be a lake at the bottom).

Unfortunately, after six weeks of rainfall and occasionally occurring torrential downpours, both villages looked like this: :O:D

This is my first post of something I've actually done in-game. Any pointers/helpful hints of how to make my towns more realistic are appreciated. The first thing I know that I need to do is get the modd to remove the yellow ring around the screen when the game is paused. I'll do that right after this post.

These images are from the small town of Leawood. Leawood is primarily a farming community, but the region's nuclear power plant is just up the road.

You're doing a mighty fine job, really. Farm fields with straight (if possible, rectangular) outlines, a town centred around two main roads crossing with the houses lined up along quiet side streets, good use of MMPs, incorporating power lines into the overall appearance (in an especially convinving way around that power plant), landscaping even a humble water pumping station... there are so many things you are doing right and well!

Some pointers:

I have my doubts about the poor church being positioned in what's basically the centre of a roundabout, and instead of building a dam to have that road cross the lake in pic no. 1, I guess you'd rather build the road around the lake IRL. The town itself has pretty squarish outlines, too. The edges could be a bit more "fuzzy". Often you have a row of houses lined along a street that leads out of the village, or a smaller settlement at the edge of the main village.

This is whining on a very high level, though!

Twin Lakes, in its early development:

AIAjqnr.jpg

This is a work in progress, as I intend to develop Twin Lakes into a large central city.  I already have the streets laid out for its next expansion in the lower right.  Below are a couple of closeups of Twin Lakes' residential neighborhoods:

Enjoy the small-town atmosphere of the neighborhoods, since, if things work out, this will one day be the downtown core of a large city.

Nice small town Steve, are you using any bats (if that's what it's called) for any of those houses, they don't look familiar.  8)

Yes, I am using several sets of house BATs, obtained here on the exchange (STEX) and the SimCity Devotion's exchange (LEX).

For starters, Mattb325's single family houses are considered a must for anyone building North American style neighborhoods.  He has a series of houses over at the LEX.  Other houses and sets depend on one's tastes.

giggidy!

My current computer can't handle simcity when my cities get too big or too many mods, so I am deprived currently until my new one gets here in a few weeks.  I'm going through withdrawal currently.

The walls are actually separate from the SPAM. If I remember correctly, they are one of the many IRM-type downloads (Industrial Replacement Mod). The farms themselves are part of the SPAM though.

Yes, these would be the IRM filler series, which can be found and I'm always happy when I see people put them to good use. :)
