If anyone counts votes my vote goes obviously to NYc, but I also like Auckland; the skytower makes it a real modern skyline (though it is a modern city)

To me, there's nothing quite like New York...
...but I am a little biased. The view of Midtown from the Brooklyn Bridge is just spectacular, though. In fact, it's the only reason why I've switched my jogging course from the Highline on the Hudson to the bridge.

P1030795.jpg

But I also happen to be a pretty big fan of older buildings. Really, most of anything made after 1960 I could care less about...
...that is, there are a few exceptions, though, I find the majority of the new buildings in China, Japan, Europe and the southern and western United States these days to be a bit... soulless, if I can use that word without being offensive. Impressive? By all means, yes, though I much prefer the romanticism of buildings styled after Art Deco, Beaux-Arts and Art Nouveau.
That's just me.
Consequently, as a Detroit-raised transplant in Manhattan, I also find a great appreciation for the skyline of my former city. While unimpressive in its volume of buildings and their heights, some of Detroit's buildings are the finest examples of early 20th century architecture we have.

That picture doesn't do it justice, but, quite frankly, I thought it was cool, seeing as I snapped it from the window of a plane...

1. Hong Kong. See Page 1 and you'll see why.

2. Chicago. Sears Tower and many other great structures.

3. New York.

4.Shanghai

5.Vancouver has a great one. Nice city!

My Least Faves.

1. Dubai. It just doesn't come together as a skyline, rather a line of buildings.

2. Detroit

3. Beijing. The CCTV HQ is ugly.

4. Tianjin, China. Pollution

5. Paris

here are my favorites:

1: hongkong, due to the dencity and the mountains.

File:Hong Kong Skyline Restitch - Dec 2007.jpg

2: Then there's New york city, because of the variety of buildings but the complexity gets to me, too.

File:NYC wideangle south from Top of the Rock.jpg

3: Then there's Los Angeles, but ONLY in winter. at that time, rain wwashes the smog away. (i could'nt get a pic of LA in winter)

File:Los Angeles downtown sunset cityscape.jpg

4: after that it's San Fransisco. the golden gate and the mountains are a great mixture.

File:SF From Marin Highlands3.jpg

5: my 5th favorite is definitely seattle. the space needle along with the square-shaped buildings mixed with Mt. Rainier is beautiful!

File:Seattle 4.jpg

Well, that's my top five! i hope you all agree! (or at least some of them!)

I'm writing a trilogy.

There is always something breathtaking about enormous cities that go on forever like Hong Kong and New York and Chicago (where I'm from), but for it's size and aesthetic I give it to Pittsburgh (where I live).  I find it very pleasing to the eye.  The fact that it is surrounded by green hills is really beautiful too (Kind of hard to capture that with one picture though)  also, Imagine those green hills in the fall . . .

The_Point_Pittsburgh_Pennsylvania.jpg

I have been to many US cities and have yet to find one as concisely beautiful as Pittsburgh.  IMO . . .

houston_skyline.jpg

I used to run along this bayou (Buffalo Bayou) in Houston.  This is the view of downtown I got to enjoy every day on my run.  It is not as large as most cities of this size, since Houston is built out instead of up, but it is my favorite skyline.  It is one of several "skylines" in Houston.

Dallas, Texas is definitely the best skyline ever. The buildings are perfectly placed out there are no super tall buildings that you ask, "Why the heck did they build that?" Everything comes together in perfect harmony. I really like this picture of Dallas because Dallas always looks great a night. Especially the Bank of America Plaza and the Reunion Tower.

@Roger51: Is your picture of Perth, Australia. Beautiful city.

@pona12: I agree with you to some extend, Dallas is by far the best, but I agree that cities like Dubai are overated. Its a weird city, just some random huge buildings in the middle of nowhere...I have to disagree though, before 9/11 New York had an amazing skyline, not as good since then though.

dubai is indeed beautiful, but look at the map of dubai, theres nothing but desert around it, plenty of empty space to grow out instead of up, yet they build huge buildings, and make manmade islands in the gulf as if they dont have enough space, i dont understand this behavior 3.gif

The Gambling and Entertainment Captial of the World... Las Vegas, Nevada!

view-of-the-las-vegas-strip--november-20

-"The Strip" under construction at the new City Center! It really is a city within itself too...

Strip-Strto-Zm.jpg

An older picture of the Strip I think maybe 2006? It's old because the Stardust is still there (lol)

Those were the best pictures I could find. Though it's a cluster along one main drag, it's beautful at night and where else can you see such a slection of buildings in the world come together like this? Exactly you can't and as Las Vegas progresses into the 21'st century the Casinos are becoming less "themed" and more Modern, Art Deco, and Realstic.

Side note, if you have not taken the tram and walked through city center at night, it's something I strongly recomend doing if you can.

Edit: To people about Dubai, it was built during the greatest boom to ever hit the middle east and was really built as a gateway destination with huge attractions to draw in travelers, the tallest building in the world, the largest man made islands in the world, an indoor ski slope (though orginally intended just for the wealthest people). But when the greatest depression hit other countries (ironic?) they loss 80% of their income in that city with oil and loans keeping the city a float most of this projects have stopped and more than 50% of it's hotel rooms remain empty and some even never used. It's almost like looking at a possible future of Vegas, though unlike Dubai, Vegas has a healthy ammount of "permante" residents (close to 2,000,000 now if you count the entire Metro area of Clark County). Which is why Vegas has been fine during the depression... just slow.

Abu Dhabi on the other hand has focused more on it's existing population and improving it's quality of life insted of big eye candy to draw people in and is redoing it's downtown. Abu Dhabi looks to me like the desert verson of Hong Kong.

One last thing, Dubai may have the tallest building in the world but it's also the uglest thing I've ever seen. Did aliens help plan that thing? Good lord it's awful...

Well, it isn't the biggest but I think the Nashville skyline is pretty cool:

nashville.jpg

And a city with a building nicknamed the "Batman Building" has to be pretty cool.

However, I think that NYC has the best skyline.

Cincinatti was just amazing, especially heading down I-71 ( I think) coming in from Covington, KY.  I recently moved from Houston to Rochester, and this skyline was definintly the most awesome off all the major cities I drove through.

However, my favirotes are probably NYC, or Toronto.  But I said Cincinatti becuase I want to be unique.

I'm partial to Chicago.

Chicago from my gym.

Downtown Chicago from Adler Planetarium.

"Whether it be the sweeping eagle in his flight, or the open apple-blossom, the toiling work-horse, the blithe swan, the branching oak, the winding stream at its base, the drifting clouds, over all the coursing sun, form ever follows function, and this is the law."

—Louis H. Sullivan, "The tall office building artistically considered." Lippincott's Magazine, March 1896.

Vancouver is a nice skyline, all glass pretty much. But it doesn't have much variety all buildings are about the same height and style. From the ground it's beautiful, from the air.....not so much.

Best: Hong Kong. Personally, I love the uniqueness of the layout of the city, (like Macau, HK seems like it's near falling into the sea) as well as the amazing architecture. (if anyone can view my download history, they can confirm that 3.gif)

Runners Up:

Chicago: My home city, and personally one of my favorite. Combines high rises (CNA, Hancock, Sears Tower, Trump) with mid rises and a giant park (Grant/Millenium) with architectural styles from the late 1800's to tomorrow (Chicago Spire)

Frankfurt: One of my favorite buildings in Europe: the Commerzbank in Frankfurt, Germany. Frankfurt is probably Germany's most modern and tall city, as it is a major banking center. Very nice architecture, once again spanning traditional European housing, and modern skyscrapers.

I agree. Plus Pittsburgh is one of those rare cities that have a 'entrance'-There is nothing like 'entering' the city from the tunnels and watch as the city just opens and expands in front of your eyes. very unique.
