Wow... I loved the Opening Ceremonies. The scale of the performances were just epic!

In fact, I actually watched the Opening Ceremonies 3 times today! Once live @ 7am (EST), an encore @ 1PM, and again tonight (6pm on CBC, 7:30 on NBC). I only watched the last part in the morning, the middle in the afternoon, and the beginning in the evening. I kinda saw it backwards, but at least I have now seen the whole thing! 3.gif

Way to go China! You really stepped up to the plate!

-$40 billion (US) dollars spent on the games.

-$100 Million alone for the Opening ceremonies

-About 11,000 performers.

-29,000 fireworks.

-I think there are about 630 athletes from China competing.

Wow. Just wow.

^no doubt about it.

That cermony, while kind of boring to watch after the fireworks, featured an incredible display of talent, teamwork, and technology. China gets a 10.10 rating from all on this one.

And america had french berets lol.

That's partly due to the fact that Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers, Hero, The Curse of the Golden Flower) directed the opening ceremony and his epic Chinese films are absolutely magnificent.

I don't think any opening could compare to this.  If that was our job to host we'd have Miley Cyrus up there singing ROFL.

Had to wait an hour and a half to see our country but nonetheless it was still great4.gif...and interesting to see all those countries that are involved in the world's...heh...problems.

Keep calm and take photographs.

Wow.  That was spectacular.

The choreography was amazing.   How do you even do that?

2008 people on the drums in sync

2008 people forming concentric circles

2008 people lighting their suits in sequence

And there were people in those printing blocks?   That was precision choreography.  How did they know how what to do when?

That screen along the top of the stadium is amazing.

I liked the shots of Bush in the bleachers, talking with Putin, and watching the field with binoculars.  It just struck me as funny.

The parade of nations was different.  Since there was no alphabetical order, they counted how many strokes were needed to write the nations’ name in Chinese and went in that order.

And how cute was that earthquake survivor?  He looked small for a 9 year old but walking next to Yao Ming will do that.

As Bob Costas says, it exceeded all superlatives

Haha, wow, that opening ceremony was freaking fantastic 6.gif The lighting of the Torch was great, it looked like the guy lit a detonation cord 3.gif

I was just thinking...how on Earth is London 2012 gonna shape up to that? In order to achieve it everybody in the UK is gonna have to get their arses down to London and work 16 hour days for the next 4 years. 24.gif

So much for that Chinese Islamic group's threat to disrupt the opening ceremony. At one point after the fireworks had stopped one of the Irish commentators said "That definitely won't be the last explosion you'll hear tonight"....I was really hoping he wasn't going to regret saying that 4.gif

Ouch, that would have looked bad if it hadn't been...

Saying that though... Terrorists would have made a terrible mistake to upset China in her proudest moment... you would see Nationalism on a scale that would make America's flag waving look shamefully inadequate... no doubt they would send half a million troops to Iraq for fun and after that all we'd need is a Global Liberation Army and we could call C&C Generals prophetic.

Let's keep any political discussion about China over here.

This thread about the Games themselves.

Moving on . . .

Not all American coverage is in prime time.   Currently, they are showing various sports on NBC, USA, and MSNBC.

In prime time, they usually show highlights of the popular sports, like swimming, diving, and gymnastics.

Yes, I'd have to agree that this was the most spectacular Olympics opening! It has really raised the bar for Olympics presentations - considering today's technology and China's financially deep pockets to put on such a show. There were so many stunning presentations - however, the drum sequence had to be one of the most amazingly, live choreographed moments for me.

the opening ceremony was just great!!

(being greek i will always like Athens 2004 more - lol). but they did use some of the stuff athens used, like the way the athletes enterred and the fact that the opening was done with drums... but the fireworks were just AMAZING!! (i really like the smiling-face fireworks at the end 3.gif). And the way they lit the torch was spectacular!!

overal: 10!!! absolutely amazing!!

Can London 2012 do better?

I have no idea what London could do to top that.  It will be interesting to see what they come up with.   As the announcers said, the Bird's Nest was built for that opening ceremony.  It looks a bit odd from the outside but the technology inside was amazing.

Watching the Games themselves, I was surprised to see the electronics the fencers are wearing.  Their shirts have sensors, the helmets have lights, there are a bunch of wires hanging from the back of their belts.   It all makes sense; I guess it's been a while since I've seen any fencing.

The American women swept the sabre competition.  4.gif   Who knew?   Last I heard, fencing was one of those sports that no one here paid any attention to.

There is a good website here:

http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/index.shtml

where you can see what is happening with each sport, along with overall medal counts.

I remember ping pong diplomacy clearly.   It was a major deal for a handful of American ping pong players to go to China to play.

And look what is going on now.

Amazing the difference 30 years can make.

The opening ceremonies were about 4 hours long.

But I think some of it is available here:  http://www.nbcolympics.com/

If you scroll down to the bottom, and look at the left, you can click on a link which will show some of it.

The Arrowz: Yes I saw the whole thing (in different time segments, see first post on this page). I think it was the best and most epic show in modern human history.

SkiGeek: Correction, the Opening Ceremonies were 5 hours long. (Live, that is 3.gif). Every second was worth watching.

After one day I can say that I am loving the games! I've always been a huge fan of the Olympics, and this one is surpassing all my predictions.

-My favorite event of the day was men's beach volleyball. The Latvians (ranked 23rd I think) beat the Americans (ranked 1st), dominating them in the first two sets. It was the biggest upset in Beach Volleyball Olympic history!

-Gotta love the swimming and football (soccer) too. The cycling race was long but very scenic.

Time for day two. Whoot!

Best,

-Haljackey

...Although, it is sad to hear about that American tourist being murdered and two others wounded before the killer committed suicide. Also, Tibetan protests in Tienanmen Square got violent and many have been arrested. These events, along with the Russian/Georgian conflict are taking the spotlight away from the games themselves. It seems that everything nowadays is political, including friendly sporting events.

On a happier note, congrats to Phelps and Lochte

Father-in-law of the American mens volleyball coach.    They say it was random.   Which makes more sense than someone targeting the volleyball coach's father-in-law.   They say his wife (the coach's mother-in-law) was injured and in still in serious condition.

Very sad.  Losing someone to random violence is always bad.

On a happier note, congrats to Phelps and Lochte

Michael Phelps  10.gif  My homeboy.    He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, which is just up the road.

I have the hunch that he won't beat Mark Spitz's record but it would be cool if he did.

I don't think they meant it deliberately.  They were having trouble with the recording from the beginning.  The two lines before 'the rocket's red glare" were repeated twice.  and then they cut off the end.  I figured it was a technical difficulty, not a disgusting act.

A side note about uniforms and costumes:

During the opening ceremonies, it seemed like most of the western countries were dressed very blandly.  A lot of tan, beige, and gray.  Not that any of them alone looked bad; it was just an odd trend.  or maybe it just seemed bland in comparison to what else was going on.

I also think some of the men's swimsuits look a bit odd.   They have a wide variety to chose from ranging from a full body suit to speedos.  I guess I'm just not used to seeing men wear swim suits with straps over the shoulders.   Most of them can pull it off but it's just not a good look for some of them.

Edit:

39.gif  SIlver medal for the 41 year old swimmer!   Go Dara Torres!

I was pretty mad that I missed most of the opening ceremony. I only saw the Parade of Nations and lighting the Olympic torch. I've seen highlights of of the stuff I missed, but is there any place that I can see most, if not all, of the ceremony? I've been looking on NBColympics.com for a while, but I can't find a video of it.
