Preview models for these need to be done, as well as some testing. These will though, be thee first set of Single-Sided Ramps for the Diagonal direction. I'm still two minds though about doing single sided diagonal perpedicular ramps [gez that's a mouthful isn't it 14.gif].

Do you think you could do something like this:

    /idealbb/files/highway.JPG

Where the road itself becomes the onramp? I know of some intersections like this near me. There are also some that are just half of that, i.e. just onramp/offramp coming from a oneway street.

Theres some like that near where I live. In my area they are on a level carriageway, and I think they would look better as a ground highway interchange 1.gif.

Why does one drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

Why is delivery by boat called a cargo and one by land called a shipment?

That interchange actually reminds me of the way highway-highway interchanges looked in SC2000!  They have a few of those on US Rte. 3 north of Boston that they're dismantling due to high accident rates - but it'd look pretty cool in the game.

Here's an interchange that hasn't gotten much publicity: the SPUI. I am starting to want (i know; im selfish) variety in my road/avenue-highway 90degree interchange, and SPUIs are increasingly common. I think they would be a nice and realistic interchange for the game.
O yea, I also think all of the SC4 spotlight should be on the NAM people, yall are the best!

I agree wholeheartedly w/ joexcooldude on both points:

    1)  The SPUI should be attempted because it's realistic and are increasingly common (at least in the United States).

    2)  The whole of the SimCity world should have their eyes right here.  What you people do never ceases to amaze me.  Let me tell you what, I'll be super-amazed when TGC's stack gets plopped in my cities!

Erm.. what does SPUI mean? I'm not from english speaking country, and we don't have too many highways here (only ground, usually grass median and sunken) so I don't have the slightest clue to what it could stand for.

EDIT: ryan beat me to the definition of an SPUI

robk: Yea, I dont think philly has any SPUIs. However, I think that there was one planned for US 202, and the South Street exit on I-76 is a Inner SPUI. An Inner SPUI would also be nice to do (but im gonna try not to ask too much9.gif).

Actually South Street/I-76 is a normal diamond really, except it is all left exits/entrances.

now that i have seen a pic of the spui i have seen and used one of those.  We have one here in columbus ohio at 270 and sawmill i think it might be the only one in the state. They are really slick.  They speed things up quite a bit I had wondered at one time if they could be worked into the game and i would think it would be an all or nothing type of thing.  If it can be worked into the game tropod is the man that could do it.

I'm not sure if this interchange has been mentioned before (imagine going thru 32 pages of this thread with only dial-up)26.gif

But anyway, what do you people think about this in SC4. It probably isn't necessary but it looks good and adds variety. I'm not sure of the exact name but a diagram is below.
    what do you guys think?

ADD: I forgot to add that you can mirror reverse this interchange

I agree, a SPUI (SPDI) would be a very good addition as well!

For those unfamiliar, here's an example:

    sofint.jpg

The intersecting road can also be above the freeway.  Perhaps we could have one like the one pictured above (intersection underneath) for elevated highways, and one with the intersection on top for ground highways?\

We have one here in Concord like the one above (I-93 Exit 13), which replaced an older interchange (a huge diamond-trumpet-parallel hybrid) and I have to say it does quite nicely.  I was impressed the first time I saw it, and the footprint is nearly nothing! Unlike the one above, the on/off-ramps barely detach from the mainline, pretty much only separated by the width of the retaining wall and a very narrow grass strip.

    Just my $0.03.

    -Chris

lakeyboy - that's the trumpet interchange, which at least I have asked for.  They're very common in the US, especially on toll highways (such as my avatar's namesake), see below.  The circle part of the trumpet can vary in position as well (left or right), usually depending on the prevailing directional traffic volumes. The heavier movement will get the longer (faster) outside of the circle.

Here's an example of a double-trumpet, the massive Exit 57 (Camp Rd/NY 75)on the I-90 NYS Thruway in Hamburg, NY (my old hometown).  This is a popular method of placing tollbooths (employed by several in the City Journals).  -
Incidentally, the town doesn't like this configuration very much as it eats into a massive amount of retail space (Camp Rd is a major arterial strip), and they've been pushing the Thruway Authority to shrink it...interesting to see if anything ever comes of that.

sargeantcm - I've been through that interchange!  Sweet!

I tell y'all what, if I had the skills, I'd try my hand at making a trumpet, SPUI, or any other interchange y'all wanted.  However, I'm not skilled at that kind of stuff, so I'll leave it to our NAM people.

    Yeap!
A cloverleaf interchange with highway/avenue intersection would be great.
    A T-interchange too!

    aaaah...

The idea to make the highway like the one-way roads would be great, but we must to re-design all the highways and interchanges of the game.
But 6 lanes (5 if you put a emergency lane) would be more realistic. I think 2 tiles large is a little bit narrow, no?

If you see it, the lanes of the avenue are larger than the highway's lanes.

Sorry if i am an autist with english...14.gif

    GSTommyLee,

Since I know you are so obsessed with what I have been working on all day, I will satisfy your urges with a little teaser. I just have a few more things to do, which won't take long at all.

    /idealbb/files/Top

I will be seeing vertices in my sleep for months after working on this bad boy.

If any of you do not know what this is, well you will just have to wait until I post the final pic tom.

Sorry about the clutter in the picture, but I just printed my screen for the shot. I hope that you can pic out the primary structure, and don't worry about the blue spheres, they are just there to delineate my boundaries.

Well I have a practice to go to, that I am late for. When I get back I will finish this thing, and show it off as soon as possible.

Tropod Do me a favour; post a pic of your game; of the Mouse/Cursor with the Ped Mall Tiles on it [in other words; a pic showing that you have the Ped Mall Tiles active on the cursor]. Then post/attach it here.

Sorry I've taken so long, I've been camping the last few days. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow (or later today...3.gif, because it's 1:20 in the morning here).

punkz6 : I find it odd that you chose to post a picture that is currently beeing rebuild, (causing a lot of traffic jams). Not that the picture isn't pretty. It's that shows the interchange as it is actually, a part of the old traffic circle (with traffic lights!!) and a part of the new one. They are rebuilding it because the old one was to dangerous.

It's also fun to see the L'Acadie interchange from the skies. Great picture, even if I wouldn't want to see such a traffic nightmare in my cities.

Ok, without further ado, it is done.

Finally we can intersect 3 highways at one junction. (We will be able to after some considerable modding, but hey the model is done.)

Well here are some pics of it:

    /idealbb/files/Top

    /idealbb/files/Above

Look Tolomar, you are famous 10.gif.

    /idealbb/files/Side

    /idealbb/files/Highlights

And here are two preview render shots, which came out pretty in my opinion:

    /idealbb/files/Close.jpg

    /idealbb/files/Far.jpg

Please, Please, Please, no comments about the textures. 1) I know some of them came out funky, there is nothing I can do about that. 2) These are not even the final ones, they are on the model so I can see how it looks.

A quick note about the splits. There are two splits here:

    1) The highway seperates the two different sides.

    2) The main lanes split from One 3 lane deck, to Two 2 lane decks. At this split the middle lane of the highway, will split off to both directions, and the two outer lanes will be exit only lanes going to their respective ramps. Refer to the above pictures for clarification, if you need any.

All the ramps have more than enough clearance.
Every direction is accessible from the highways, ie from one highway you have the options to get to the other two.

Well what do you think, anyone like this?
