How do YOU name your cities?

I name every one of my cities Heresville!

(There. That's my second April Fool's prank.)

Though it took me ages to understand why that was the default city name in the original SimCity. Kept thinking it was a messed up way to spell Harrisville.

Actually, city names are something I've traditionally had trouble with. Though I've had a few decent regional themes lately.

I name my towns after the geography (Easy Point, Long Bay, Legend Inlet) or just random names (Free, Vibe, Time) even just cities or things I like (Atlantis, Port Arthur, Thunder Bay, Dallas, Calgary, Duluth) and then people (James, Hal) and events (Halloween, Birthday, Christmas).

I named my cities in my region with a my own system of German "stems" ,like Frank, Hans, and Muhl with German "leaves" like over, furt , and heim .

For example : Innsmunster , my most devloped city the region I'm working on.......

Inns - would be the "stem"

munster - the "leaf"

Here is a list of all of the stems and leaves

I usually use names of towns I live near-take Foxboro- then alter them slightly-maybe Fortoro instead- and make a new town.

I also use names of greek and roman gods and godesses. One city I made is called Minerva who is the greek god of the arts, and that city is based around arts and education.

I like that idea, with the greek and roman gods/godesses and the cities reflecting the names of the gods, good idea mate.

I just try to name at after the type of location/demographic. i.e. if my city is near the ocean in a california-like environment, I would probably name it something like Sueno Del Mar. If all fails though, I could just steal a name from google maps... but every time I've done that, I come up with an even better name after the city is established.

Oh and sueno del mar is spanish for dream of the sea.

I usually have Bastian from The Neverending Story yell out a name from the attic of the school, but for some reason he always yells out "Allltraaaayyyyoooooouuuu", which gets pretty annoying - so I just end up making cities with a color in the name, such as my first one Aquaville, followed by Port Evergreen, Aqua Vista, Cobalt Springs, and now Copper Basin - which originally started out as Indigo Bay.(It wasn't a desert city when I first made it.)  If you couldn't tell, my favorite color is blue!  9.gif

Building on the Berlin map, I used names of cities from the Berlin region - but with locations reversed. Without such inspiration, I give cities fairly generic names - and stay away from English if possible to try and disguise how uninspired they are.

Boy, it sure has taken me a while to get a hang of this game. I think I'll raid STEX finally.

usually I take the names of already existing British cities and replace a vowel or consonant or two.

i.e. Sheffield = Shaffield

Steal names or make them my own, like New York into Yorkshire.

But I can think of names too...just think of random things and if they're good enough, use them. Like Concord I got a name for one of my regions from the plane...

I usualy just take them from names of streets in my area, such as my last two cities;

 Springhurst Ave.

 Dowling Ave.

or just other random ones to list a few;

 St. James Ave.

 Wellesley St.

 Aberdeen Ave.

most of the time when I find names there is also a city somewhere in the US with the same name.. 30.gif

Soapy!

I imagine a city. Then, my selection of buildings in that city directly affect the city name.

For instance If the city building are Mickiebear's mediterranean building and my city is modeled after Venice, then I will name it Altomare because Alto in Italian means high and Mare means sea so the city's name would be High Sea when translated into Englsh.

Or for a Amsterdam city (I like canals), I would give it a Dutch meaning,

What ever i see on the road since I drive around alot. I most likely alter most names i see if I think theyre overused. I named my Region Delphos from a town in Ohio that I always see the sign for on route 23 or 75. plus theres always names in movies.

If I'm not thinking of a name on my own, I pick names from all the video games I have (Jacinto, Tollen, Montevado, Timgad, etc.)

I just come up with Random things. In my region that I am working on the main city is called Kherrington. All of the suburbs are faux-English. Like, instead of the suffix -shire, I changed it to -shur. I have Esiksshur (taken from Essexshire), Devinshur (from Devonshire), Suffikshur (Suffolk) and I have some -shurs that make no sense such as Noehshur, Heiligshur, Kherringtonshur. And then I threw in cities with the names of Mexico and Alhambra for the hell of it.

I use Latin bases like -sula or -mus or the rather obvious -opolis. Just think of something, usually a geographic feature in your city, find out what it means in Latin (there's an abundance of translaters on the internet) and you've got a decent city name. My best city is 'Litinsula' which means 'Grand Isle' in Latin.

Two options:

When I'm inspired I tend to use typical Catalan or Spanish city naming: St. <<write your name here>> of <<write your region here>>, Castlewhatever, Port of Whatever, Whatever on Sea or any Catalan word finished with suffix -ia.

When I'm not inspired I just take a word or a geographical characteristic and I make a name with it. For example, now I'm working on a city called Second; just because it's the second large city I build since I got the Rush Hour expansion. If I plan a city with large condominiums, Brick City is an option.

And so on...
