So, first post in a while... might as well be about T.O. I think it's a beautiful city, but when you think about the whole of the GTA. Downtown is full of history, unique neighboorhoods, and many different cultures that reflect the core of a true world city. However, it's saddled by relatively inefficient urban planning and that awful 1970s vintage skyline. Don't get me wrong, buildings like the First Canadian Place do their job perfectly, they're just so ugly. I feel that way about most American-style cities. The waterfront projects will be a huge step in the right direction, and I really hope they manage to get realised like they should. But I think the "suburbs" or "exurbs" are even more interesting than the downtown core. Places like Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Mississauga- there's where the new working class of the global economy is emerging, one focussed on professional and knowledge workers. International communities linked with today's rising economic powers. Some nice scenery as well, but not as nice as it could be... yet. I'm quite interested in new development philosophy for the city, that being much higher density and public transit availability. Whenever I see photos of Toronto, it's just those several recycled stock shots. I'm thinking of making my own "Toronto Picture Book"...
