This is an idea I have taken from Urbandogg with their post about Toronto vs New York. Which Australian city is better?

We'll start with Brisbane

Down the road from Brisbane is the Gold Coast. Here we'll find the tallest residential tower - the Q1

Q1GoldCoast.jpg

I love the waterways on the Gold Coast

And I think we all know Sydney is probably going to win, here's some pics

But what about Melbourne? I have never been but it looks nice

Perth also looks like a great place to go. I never been there either...

So what does everyone think?

Gold Coast is nice. So much potential with those small islands and intricate waterways! If it were a simcity I would fill them up with Hi-dense res.... it's giving me ideas haha.

All cities of Australia are very hard to compare and say which ones are better. Each one is unique in its own way:

Sydney has the wonderful harbor, Brisbane has nice waterways and lifestyle, Melbourne is very historic and has lots of architectural buildings.

There is also the other capital cities like Perth and Adelaide which mostly consist of water as their main features like all other Australian cities.

My personal favorite as a city of Australia would have to be Sydney! I also like Queensland quite a bit, and not just for themeparks 1.gif

Here is some photos i got courtesy of SkyScraperCity, these photos just outline the more residential parts of Australian cities we never see, and show how nice they are.NOTE:These photos are all from Sydney metropolitan and CBD area and beyond.

Roads are really narrow, saving space for more development of the city.

I hardly think it's fair not to mention Adelaide, or Canberra etc when comparing Australian cities.

Personally i can't choose between Sydney or Melbourne

Sydney is very beautiful where Melbourne has a better culture.

Sydney on bias.

I think Sydney for tourists, Melbourne to live in. Melbourne is much more cultural and personal, It also has better parks. Sydney has a beautiful location, but no real depth. Queensland is just tourist heaven, and has about as much culture as a mossy rock, aside from a drinking culture.

Sydney is a tourist haven but get out into the suburbs and it's horrible (well most of it). But it has a very interesting layout due to its organic growth which I find very fascinating. Melbourne, in my honest and biased opinion (only 'cause I live there!), is a better place to live. It is "the city in the shadows" when comparing to Sydney, but has more culture and life. It is easier to live in generally speaking.

I've been to Brisbane and it looks pretty nice, a bit too fast-paced for my liking. However, many say Perth is the best place to live due to its relaxed climate and easy-going lifestyle. Also, it has the best transport network in the country!

Thanx for everyones opinions. I was going to go through all the capital cities but theres not much to show with other ones. I love the layout of Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It's all spread out and prepared for more development where Sydney is just squished and spreading from that...

What about Wollongong? Here's a map

About a one and half hour drive south of Sydney

If I had to choose somewhere to live... that would defiantly be anywhere in Queensland, but Sydney get's my vote hands down as the most beautiful city anywhere in Australia.

I'm too scared to go to Melbourne after watching some of that underbelly show... hehe... 3.gif

You actually got to see some of Underbelly? before it got banned. I live in Melbourne so have to vote Melbourne as the best most livable city. Never liked Sydney that much - too spread out and business orientated.

Melbourne is ranked the most livable city in the world. (Many survey's not done in Australia)

I've actually heard better things about Melbourne than Sydney, so to answer the question, Melbourne.

That aside, Sydney is one of three cities I've always wanted to visit before I die (the other two are Hong Kong and Vancouver, BC).

And one more note: I think out of all the countries in the world, Austrailia has the best group of large cities. I think on the last "Most Livable Cities" list, 3 or 4 of the top ten were in Austrailia.

Oh yeah, just for the record, Melbourne is set to overtake Sydney as the biggest city in Oz by 2028! Take that!

I didn't know that Australia had so many big cities.quote>

After looking at this thread it poses that there is people who don't know the many cities of Australia.

Like everyone here says 'Melbourne is a very livable city, and has the most culture' I completely agree. Even though before i said Sydney was my favorite city in Australia, i would have to say Sydney cant be compared to Melbourne when it comes to culture and lifestyle.

Here is some photos showing Melbourne and culture in Melbourne; photos courtesy of Skyscrapercity :

Melbourne has many bars and clubs, also unique places like rooftop bars and rooftop cinemas.

As Bob Birrell said according to The Australian, Melbourne will not be bigger than sydney by 2030 but will grow more.  Sydney will still be half a million bigger. The "takevoer" will never happen.

didn't know that Australia had so many big cities. quote>

Well Sydney and Melbourne are really the big cities. After that it drops down to  1 and a half millon. Remember we only have 21 million people5.gif We are about the same size as usa (with out hawaii, alaska, and Texas)

    Population stats
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population

    1 Sydney  4.3 million
    2 Melbourne 3.7 million
    3 Brisbane  1.8 million
    4 Perth       1.5 million
    5 Adelaide  1.2 million

Melbourne is better in ways (culture, events[even though you pinched the f1 and australian open and olympics are better then commonwealth games] and Sydney is better in others (weather, beaches, the harbour etc)

Lastly the best planned city is Canberra but everyone knows the capital should have been Melbourne or Sydney. Better if it was Melbourne becuase all they do is talk about how good they are down there.18.gif44.gif17.gif

Brisbane has just came out of it's "big country town" phase, so it's not fair to compare it. Canberra cannot be compared because it is planned and is not meant to have a great lifestyle or whatever, and Darwin is too remote and arid. Perth is also remote but it's so remote it has to be big and good (as its serves most of remote WA). Anyway, ATM, Brisbane is the quietest but coolest Australian city.
