Witnesses reported a "big bang" in Times Square at a military recruiting station. The bomb exploded at 3:45 a.m. ET. No one was injured.

"If it is something that's directed toward American troops then it's something that's taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate," said Army Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, who is the commander of Army recruiting in Manhattan.quote>

Probably an Anti-War activist, not a terrorist... although, it wouldn't surprise me if they branded you as a terrorist for bombing stuff on US soil these days, no matter how insignificant the blast is. The recruiting station will probably be closed for a week or something, nothing too bad.

Hope they catch the guy though... Activists like this can be dangerous if they get a hold of proper bomb making stuff.

It was probably Code Pink, or some other self-righteous-to-the-point-of-delusion fringe group. One thing is for sure, it wasn't a militant Islamic terrorist.

sakarr, I'm not sure what level of sanity you're in to be laughing at "Bomb explodes in Times Square"...

For a moment I got scared those fecking terrorists blew up my favorite city again... then I heard it wasn't them... Wondered why I hadn't heard of this yet. Those anti-war radicals ought to hide a bit, unless they're found and hanged... I'd do it happily. Freaks!

A mindset like that is far more scary than the occasional bomb.

The only good thing about suicide bombers is that they can only cause mayhem once. Radical loons aren't much different. Sure, their aim is usually to only cause property damage, but the goal is the same. To cause terror by means of random acts of violence. In that sense, I agree with Bumdark, Hang 'em.

I heard about this early today too, I thought it was bad until they told us it was fine. Very scary though. They aren't letting traffic run through Times Sq except for 7th and Broadway. 43rd and parts of 42nd street are closed in that area. Gridlock alert! 2.gif

there's a statement now (live), they don't know who it was, but then again, nothing big happened.

A bang, some shattered glass and a screwed entrance door... nothing more...

well, now you lot should understand what we had to put up with in the mid to late 70's with the IRA bombings in London.

What's interesting is that no one was killed or even hurt (thank goodness for that), and yet this is still big news. Why? Because of the location. If someone did exactly the same thing to a recruitment center in North Nowhere, Wyoming, you probably wouldn't be hearing about it much or at all.

Usually, "terrorist" would define anyone who does something violent with the intent of causing fear. Anyone who sets off an explosion on pubic property could fit that bill. Bear in mind, there are terrorists who are not radical Muslims.

You are absolutely right, though- this guy will be branded as a terrorist. And that's completely understandable, since if you refer to him as anything less it seems like you're letting him off the hook. If Al Qaeda sets off a bomb and it's terrorism, the logic than follows that if anyone sets off a bomb, it's terrorism. Now, whether or not that logic is valid depends on how you define terrorism. Obviously, there's a difference between an organization mounting an attack on a country or  group of people for idealogical reasons and one person chucking a bomb at a building as a sort of violent "protest". The American solution is generally to simply ignore that difference and have a zero tolerance approach to any such violence, no matter what the reason for it is.

Though there is an awful lot of irony in the idea of an anti-war activist setting off a bomb...

Hope they catch the guy though... Activists like this can be dangerous if they get a hold of proper bomb making stuff.quote>

True. Terrorist or not, he's still a criminal and he needs to be stamping license plates for an awful long time.

chances are it was probably some knucklehead who was pissed at the whole marine throwing the dog video, and decided to take it out on a military recruiting station in NY -_-

some people really need to have their head knocked back into reality, im no war supporter, but common sense tells me trying to blow up a military recruiting station isnt the best way to handle the problem

Thats what I was thinking. Due to New York's sentimental significance to a large majority of people throughout the world, its the obvious place to strike when you feel like putting a point accross. I can't imagine this is the last we'll be hearing of 'bombing' incidents in New York due to its extreme heart felt value.

I have heard from quite a few people, code pink had discussion talks etc about this.. don't know if it will confirm to be them. So I'm giving this a 50/50 chance that it was code pink... who ever the heck did this, I want them like to be hung.

DuskTrooper: Heck yah man!

zegladis: I can't say how much I agree with you on that.

Only ones involved with Code Pink and that are overly "9/11 didn't happen, it was all bushes fault" and "bush lied, troops died" which is the stupidest remark I've ever heard... I'll debate this with em' but I can't stand Code Pink, [Marc- Let's keep it civil, please.]

Let's keep the discussion civil please. Just because you, in general, may not like an organization, program, etc. doesn't mean you should respond violently in your post.

According to Wikipedia, it is a feminist anti-war group that describes themselves as a "grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into healthcare, education and other life-affirming activities."

Edit:  forgot to include link.  oops

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Holy ***** the headline of this thread had me scared *****less, thank god noone was hurt though, I hope the catch who ever did this. Terrorism is terrorism, no matter how big or small and spreading terror can no longer be tollerated by the rational thinking majority, it's time we rise up and say "I will walk these streets without fear, I will not be overcome by base instinct and I will not let anyone subvert me or my way of life through the use scare tactics!"

No offense to American people, but sometimes all this drama about bombs going off in America sickens me. Guys, you invade other countries, you use extremely powerful weapons, and you kill anyone that gets in your way. And all of that for what, oil? You cause so much harm in other countries that kill thousands of people and don't seem to give a damn, yet your famous towers get hit by planes and a bomb goes off in your city and your ranting and raving as if the world has ended. Kind of brought it on yourself, didn't you?

Here's and example. During WWII Japan launched an attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, which killed about 150 people, and in return America drops nuclear bombs which killed over 1 million people? I know that's the past, but it simply represents what's going on today.

So America, stay the hell out of other countries and mind your own business. That would do us all a favor, including your loyal citizens. Phew.
