I'm doing a fun survey on City Names. That is, what did u name your city or cities when in SC4?
Me, I have 1 city growing and 1 waiting in the wings to get started growing. Here is my Only City
I have thus far in SC4.

Steven's Point

I named the city after myself of course. And I'll tell your more about Steven's Point later in the
apporaite forum ok. And also, what city is your best city that u currently have growing?

Sounds like this could be a good idea However, there is a City Journal section in the Forums friend. I think it just may be a waste of a thread starter.. Just my opinion... Unless you can give some details as what they survey will be conveying.

I take an atlas, and name each city correspoding to its location in real life.

Example: in the default region New York, the big city in the bottom right contains Long Island, so I name it Long Island. No sweat.

A good tactic is to pick some feature of the geography. Port ____, Mt ____, _____ Bend, ____ Bluff. Then you can just start plugging in nouns until you get something you like.

If you're feeling snarky, some kind of inside joke or pun is nice. For instance, I'm working on a town now named Port Orca. The name comes from a rather mean slang term for girls from Port Orchard, WA who are on the prowl for sailors from the nearby navy base. Blame my big brother for that one. 9.gif You can also go the irony route, and name a town you plan to put all your pollutants in "Paradise", or a small farm village "Metropolis."

Another is to take a person's name. A lot of towns are named after a founding father of some sort. For instance Port Orca has an industrial suburb called Brownsburg.

I like to give mine nice names. Like Montpillier, Three Rivers. Stuff like that, names that in real life people would say "Oooooh fancy!" Before they even get into the city. Nothing wrong with good first impressions. Even if the city doesnt follow its prestigous name.

Ha, that's pretty interesting, considering there's a city in Wisconsin called that. My mom went to college there, too :O

For my city names, I crack open any nearby Dragonlance book, go to a random page, and point at the first two names I see. Once for the name, once for the mayor. I ended up with some names such as:

- Khellendros

- Dallatar

- Gamashinoch

- Solamnia

- Malastryx

- Shadowdale

Among others.

I usually just do the first thing that comes to my mind that sounds like it could be a city name.

This has resulted in a number of bizarre (but possible) names. Including:

Port Hening

Cecil Pines (Which, I found out later, is also the name of a retirement home in Florida!)

Ellenar

Narsenfeld

Fullton Harbor

Quinten

Tayville

Green Mountain

Sage Point

Hereford

Jamesport

Paliminko Port

x = any #

d = any direction (north, south, east, west, anything inbetween)

(_) = pretty much anything

Alright, this is what I do:

Sub-x

Div-x

d-Div

d-Hills

d-beach (my favorite)

point-(_)

mount-(_)

That's the general idea.

I named my cities in dutch, but sometimes I name a city in an international way, like:

- Konrad

- Kapish

- Maxtor

- Quenotrio

- Kalibula

English/American names can start with:

Mount ...

Fort ...

Point ...

Lake ...

Direction like north or south

... and the names can end like:

...town

... city

... beach

...bourg

...bourugh

...ville

... village

... end

... creek

...castle

The Adminstrator can move this to City Journal if it needs to be there ok. I have no problem with that. All those names of your cities are awesome names.

I also have some other cities on the horizon. Here's a list of cities I plan on doing when I get Steven's Point up and growing.

Maxiston- (Maxiston is named after Maxis of course)
    Caldorre- (From Sentinel Worlds I)
Stephensburgh - (Another City named after myself)
Note: only difference is I have a PH Instead of a V 17.gif.
Norejeann - (From Sentinel Worlds I)
Ceyjavik - (From Sentinel Worlds I)
Tolte -  (A small village on the planet of Norjeann in SWI).
Orion - (A name I got from Starflight Series)

These city names are just a few ideas of what I have planned for these cities. My problem is I'm
always having to restart from making booboos with terrain LOL.

I don't want to insult anyone but personally I hate those cities where they just didn't took five seconds to think about how to call it. ex: New... Port... ....Land ...hill I think the only acceptable one is ...burg. I like to think about mine. I've got one I called Praline, or an other named Dinrix. I know its hard to find a good one and I get the port... and stuff but not so original. enyways I feel quite arrogant to say that but I've held that in for quite a while.

I use a combo of real and made up names but always ones that sound like real towns.
