Here's a mini-photodump showing the Western part of Treblane's CBD.

Looks fantastic .. I've been doing something similar with the remake of Triton City

Ok the first time ever I show some pics of my cities. As Dutch European, for me "downtown" means the oldest part of town, with normally little highrise. Like in Europe, the highrise in my cities is normally in the suburbs. I also intentionally add little logic to the centers of my cities.

The current state of my latest city: :P

Great park. The "bottom half" of the CBD, with the W2W/medium rises and such is nice too. I think it might be difficult to intergrate those townhouses at the top of the picture in with the very dense CBD so close by but I'm eager to see how it turns out!

Also, top right of the picture, above the park: perfect place for a (non-maxis) university campus, no? :)

I've been on this thread complimenting people for a while.  Time to show my own stuff.

I'm usually not a big fan of "Skyscraper Jungles" but yet here we are.

The last months i built a city as big as possible. But i tried to avoid that it becomes only a concrete desert, so i put a little bit of water, hills and woods in it. It's not a realistic and not a beautiful city, but with as much skyscrapers as i was able to find in the internet (and which looks good in all zooming levels and fits into simcity 4). Therefore half of the city is a CBD

The riverfront:

A smaller CBD on the other side of the city:

which transitions into a not so dense commercial area:

very impressive. usually those skyscraper jungles look crud but that one looks impressive and aesthetically pleasing. it'd be a work of art if the waterfronts were fixed up all nice like.

Thanks.

But the waterfront is a big problem: I searched for hours in the internet to find seawalls/embarkments. There are seawalls which looks beautiful in high zoom levels. You can see them in every CJ. But when you zoom out they become flawed and ugly, some disappear completely in lowest zoom level. They are all from the "marrast-type" and this flaws are inevitable because of how they work. And so i cannot use them.

The only ones i found which looks good in all zoom levels are jeronij's "shore conforming seawalls 2007". But unfortunately are they made for industrial areas and don't fit into a CBD or high whealth residential area. It's a great pity that he made no version for such areas. And it would be much much work to transform the riverside in this city so that they look more or less good. So unfortunately i must let the waterfront how it is. Anyway i think i use them a little bit in the next city.

But here are two more pictures from the commercial districts:

Sadly they are from the "marrast-Type" too.

Really pretty:

But then you zoom out:

screenshot97qgfj3.jpg

The same ugly flaws like with so many other seawalls.

"Well i mean, i'd term the existing shoreline in those pics as ugly, so an improvement on a couple of zoom levels is an improvement nevertheless."

Really ugly? :D

I would say it is a natural shoreline and therefore completely odd in such a city (at least in the commercial areas).

But in my opinion it is better to have a natural shoreline which looks "realistic" in every zoom level than a seawall which looks good in one zoom level but completeyly unrealistic (because of graphical flaws) in another zoom level.

I think next i use a steep rocky shoreline in the citys which i think fits a little bit better.

All if these downtowns are so inspirational... Maybe one day mine will be good enough to show... Til then:

I notice a couple of you have the gherkin in your downtowns, is this available on stex or lex?? Or is it custom? I've been thru stex pretty extensively but didn't see it on there...

I'm a newbie, so don't kill me if I'm asking the obvious ... but do you guys build your commercial districts "naturally" or do you need to use the cheat codes?

These cities are beautiful, but can they function? Or is it more of an art project?

90% of them are downloaded and "plopped" and quite a few of them use money cheats or cheat lots. It's more art to us than it is a true simulation.

It's true that for many players in this forum, SC4 has become a pure aesthetic game. It's endless BATs and MODs that make this game alive and colorful today.

Btw, we're expecting more BATs from you! Your BATs are really stylish and they will lighten our CBDs a lot! :golly:

Here's a European CBD that showed up in one of my cities recently. I didn't plan this but just got very lucky that it showed up.
