You weren't wrong about the roadgeekery. It's excellent. I've never seen those type of traffic lights in my area. We only have these:
Light Rail vehicle on Howard Street downtown
(the one on the left)
Yes, I am making my first CJ, which should be out by July. 44.gif
Thanks for noticing.

That was excellent! I love the street names and the intersection lights and signs. Great shopping centers on that main road!

Darn, did I miss two updates? Oh well. Both updates looked excellent.

Keep it up Dan!

Great update, these signals are interesting. Driving can be rather confusing at times... too many signals don't help at all 4.gif. And sometimes one can clearly tell the locals from non-residents by seeing them driving... a look at the license plate explains a lot afterwards.

Great setups, btw.

Great building choices for development all along Greysboro Road, especially near the I-34 interchange. I don't believe that I've ever encountered a flashing yellow turn signal before, but it looks pretty confusing! And yes, I really liked the second appearance of a Bloom grocery store. 9.gif

OMG DAN!

You didn't tell me you were CJing again!

Why isn't this a CJ that has like 2000000 comments yet?!...

Just from reading page 9 you are still in your very nice class ways of CJing with the tours of the areas that you highlight in that update.

Smith Lake looks like a really nice place to just get away from Winchester or any of the suburbs once in awhile! With all the trails and streams... it seems really sirene! Cabins that are climate controlled? Isn't that cheating 3.gif? I guess those the Piedmont people can't leave the city behind them! By the way that is one the most perfect places to set the camp fire! AMAZING!

Stepford actually scares me... lol... It's one of those gated communities where you go in but they don't let you leave... o.O I can hear it now... "One of Us! One of US!"

Your use of the RHW still amazes me and it seems like you have gotten the hang of the new version [which I have not tried yet... ]

Also I could never drive in the "Highway Safety Corridor"... $1000 for a ticket! pfft.... I can hear abuse calling 3.gif

That I-79 and US-27 intersection is AAAAMMMAZING! Road Geeks Dream for SC4! The Wanata River Bridge is just like the Zakim Bunker Bridge! with all that complexity... that is crazy... and I love it! But this must say something about the traffic at the other side... but you used a modified Diamond there... coming from the high speed ramps from the other side of the river to that kind of low speed intersection is weird... for me that is...

SR-620 and Greysboro Road looks like its not really suburban but its not quite urban... which makes it feel like most cities just outside of the financial district... lots of sit down restaurants and shops!

Man... I'm going to have to read the whole entire thing now! KEEP IT COMING DAN!!!

Thanks everyone for your support and suggestions!

The_Chris: Hopefully there aren't any mishaps or bumpy rides at the airport near you. Thanks for your comment.

Schulmanator: Thanks! The only place I've seen the flashing yellow arrow is on some newer signals in Alexandria, VA.

Haljackey: Thanks for the suggestion and glad you enjoyed the update.

Edmonton_Stinks: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the signage.

Ace of Spades: Thanks, glad you like the new, improved, downtown Winchester interchange.

Equilibria: Usually, unless a road name changes direction perpendicularly (an example of which you'll see below), a name change straight ahead isn't noted, at least here in Virginia. It would be intuitive and less confusing for drivers, though, to post the name change, wouldn't it?

KJ3400: Thanks for opening up page 10!! I've seen some signals like the one you posted (with two red arrows) just outside of Richmond, VA in Henrico County.

BbFan02: Thanks, glad you liked the development on SR-620 and the signage.

Travis (SCDawg): Thanks! Happy you enjoyed the updates!

Phil: Sadly, here in the Washington DC area, a lot of locals drive like they are non-residents! Glad you liked the update.

Kyle (Ky72x): Glad you liked the Bloom and other development. Thanks for commenting.

Tyler (TMS): Wow, thanks for the long comment. Glad you liked the updates and roadgeekery. Likewise, I'm glad to see you have a CJ again. I based the Highway Safety Corridor off of similar signage that is posted on parts of I-95 and I-81 in Virginia and off of the (now defunct) Virginia abusive driver fees. While I do drive faster than I should, I think, especially here near Washington, DC, people should drive safer.

    And now....

    u18headerpp5.jpg

Here's a view of where we left off last time, the intersection of SR-620/Greysboro Road and MP-165/Deltown Rd. You can also see former alignments of SR-620 and MP-165. Upon crossing Deltown Rd, SR-620 becomes Horton Ave.

    u18pic1rc5.jpg

Moving on, we come to the uneventful end of SR-620. Basically, Horton Ave briefly picks up SR-617 which branches back off onto Backlick Rd as Horton Ave heads into Winchester. There are no SR routes within city limits such as Winchester.

    u18pic2su1.jpg

Here's how the situation is seen on signage... first, the intersection with Greendale Ln

    u18sign1vz7.jpg

And here's the intersection with Backlick Rd, where we are going to turn left.

    u18sign2si4.jpg

Here's the view, now that we're on SR-617/Backlick Rd. S

Very Nice Dan. Showing the old alignments of roads really adds to the realism. Oh, and I was in the D.C. area on Friday, and I saw a sign for the real Backlick Rd. I was on I-95 SB, looking at Rt. 7100 (Franconia-Springfield Pkwy I believe?) and saw the sign.

    Keep it up Dan!

The old alignments for Horton Ave and Deltown Rd are well done. The signage is good too, especially the one for Kings Highway.

How's the ol' Winchester Mall doing?

More awesomeness. Are you by any chance familiar with the traffic signals which have a double red light (side by side) for left turn lanes? They have them here and they are a bit odd looking to me.

So if Winchester has no route markers and half of 617 (at one point) is in Winchester, then there is no westbound 617 (LOL). Great job with the update, the traffic lights remind me of the traffic lights not more than a mile from my house.

I am impressed once again by the accuracy and realism of your highway signs and traffic signals. The intersection of SR-617 (Backlick RD.) and US-27 looked good with the one-way roads acting as turn lanes on the east portion of it. I'll definitely be back for more!

Travis (SCDawg): Thanks!  As for Backlick Rd, I sometimes use names of real-life roads and towns to help me keep track and remember. And I plagiarized the route number in that case too (RL Backlick Rd is SR-617). I really enjoy building roads and then changing alignments as an area grows, but keeping portions of the original. I find that interesting in real life as well, such as when the RL Fairfax County Pkwy (SR 7100) was built changing alignments of other roads in  the area.

Suplado: Thanks, glad you enjoyed the tour as well as the signage!

Edmonton_Stinks: Thanks. Nothing noteworthy to report on Winchester Mall. The Black Market Off-Campus bookstore appears to be well-attended, however.

Mike The Mayor: Thanks, glad you liked the pics. There's more info on Winchester Mall several pages back (I think on pages 2 and 5).

Schulmanator: Thanks, I've seen some signals like that in Fairfax, VA. They are strange as are an analogous abomination with two red lights on top of each other for a protected left-turn signal which are abound just outside of Richmond, VA (KJ3400 posted a pic of a similar signal above).

KJ3400: Thanks, glad you like the signals. As for the straddling of the border, SR-617 is complicated situation. Piedmont County and Massopax DOT pick up the tab for Backlick Rd maintanance while most of the signals and signage are put up by the City of Winchester. Confused yet? 46.gif

Kyle (KY72x): Thanks, glad you liked the intersection of SR-617 and US-27 Bus. The turn lane ramps help speed up the traffic somewhat, though it's one of the busiest intersections in the region.

BbFan02: Thanks, glad you enjoyed the signals.

Equilibria: Thanks, the folks at Winchester Mall take pride in the appearance of the mall despite the lack of retail and customers.

Simtastico: Thanks, glad you liked the update.

Haljackey: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the signs.

    u19headergl3.jpg

Continuing on from last time, we have turned onto southbound US-27 Business/Kings Hwy en route toward downtown. Here, we pass in front of Winchester Mall and one of it's most (and only) popular attractions, Pizzaria Uno.

    u19pic1gh3.jpg

Since this is the main entrance for Winchester Mall, there's a traffic signal.

    u19sign1eb5.jpg

Continuing south, we approach Leeland Drive.

    u19pic2fx4.jpg

A newer signal was recently installed at Leeland Drive.

    u19sign2jt9.jpg

Continuing along, we're entering the "Uptown" Neighborhood of Winchester.

    u19pic3mu7.jpg

An older span-wire signal assembly at Kensington Rd with fairly new signals.

Looking at the Kings Highway beside the Winchester Mall, I really like the fact that the intersection is located on a level part of the terrain instead of having an invisible ramp leading to the entrance. The Leeland Drive traffic signal was one that I'm much more familiar with, thankfully! 3.gif Good use (once again) of the one-way road access ramp from Union Ave. to the highway. I'm looking forward to see Downtown Winchester!

What font do you use for your freeway signs? I currently use an online generator - the name slips my memory - but it doesn't allow me to make mileage signs, because the font messes up and doesn't look right.

Nice uptown suburbs and traffic signals, however I can't say I really care much for the abandoned mansions near the high school.

Everything looks great; those traffic signals at Cherry St. are so much like the ones in DC. The only thing that strikes me as odd is that the signal at US 84 has a left turn signal and a regular signal with a left arrow. In Maryland, we have just the signal with the left arrow, and use the left turn signal for when there are left turn lanes separate from the through lanes, like at major intersections where there are two left turn lanes on each side.

Very Nice Dan! Awesome work. It felt like I was driving on River Rd. west of Richmond. Oh, and I too love creating routes and then re-routing them, it gives me a sense of power, and I love destroying stuff. I also leave the old allignment, it adds to realism, and there's too much stuff on it to get rid of it.

I got a question for you too. Is I-79 a reality now, and has US-27 been upgraded? I guess thats two, my bad.

    Keep it up!

An excellent guided tour. And, unlike around here, everything is perfectly labeled at every intersection. It seems here the street signs are at opposite corners (on poles) from the street lights. So, at night, you can finally see the dim reflection of the name of the intersection right as you sail throught it. Maybe you could take over our Dept of Transportation? I would be THRILLED to see such good signage!

Thanks for giving us the Downtown stuff. This is by far the most realistic update I've ever seen from this region (I know that sounds like a backhanded compliment -- I promise it isn't). Why is the high school intersection built that way?
