Monorail vs subway

Which one do you prefer?

Monorail is faster and cheaper than subway, however you sacrifice land area that could otherwise be populated by sims.

Subway on the otherhand is more expensive, but you can gain revenues from the populated  land above.

I liek subways better.

I prefer GLR. Mainly because I like watching the trains go everywhere, plus it is now draggable, and you can put in sharp turns.

I prefer Rapid Transit (encompassing El and GLR, as well as subways), seeing as it can be placed completely underground. That makes it perfect for built-up areas. Monorails, on the other hand, take up space, can't be placed at different levels like RT, and can simply be substituted with El Rail to integrate into a broader system. I see monorail as more of a novelty network, suitable for use at airports and in some isolated pockets, but not really that interesting in a more extensive network. That's from my personal building tastes, anyway. Their high speed makes them useful for a more regional-based commuter network (though I use heavy rail for this purpose), and some people have made great monorail networks in their regions—Zel's New Carpathia comes to mind immediately.

In summary, Monorail's OK, but RT > Monorail. 19.gif

I never use monorail unless I'm doing it purely for aesthetic/exposition reasons, like in Seattle. Subway is expensive, but you usually don't need it until your city is pretty well developed, and you should be making pretty good money by then.

I usually use Subways, but when people are having trouble getting to work monorail is the fastest way of commute. Subways take up less space though. I like subways over monorail.

I usually only use monorail for novelty/asthetic reasons to, like at an airport or an amusement park, but other than that I usually stick to rail and elevated rail because I seem to be able to work with those best.  I also enjoy them over subways because you can watch the trains run and take pictures (usually for a cj).1.gif

I'm having awefull luck with the glr and el-train.. so I stay away from those.

In large cities I tend to use both subway and monorail.

El-rail is just for show really, it makes no sense from financial point of view because subway is cheaper to run and takes up less space.

Now that the NAM can elevate ordinary rail I use that quite a bit too.

I don't use GLR because I always end up crashing the game with that.

I prefer subways.  To build monorails, I have to "slice" through my cities.  It's hard for me to destroy a quite little neighborhood just so some yuppie can make it to their job faster.

Both! In downtowns I use both monorail and subway, but the traffic is still getting worse...

Both are almost the same, except that monorail is high off the ground, while subway is very mostly underground. Subways are more expensive than monorails but I somehow like subways more than monorails because monorail causes more hassle to build in already developed cities.

I use subways like would use the bus system - in urban areas connecting downtown with nearby suburbs.

I uses monorails to connect highrise and high tech districts in different cities. I read in a japanese site that monorails is the fastest transportation in the game.

Did you have any transit enabled lot? If you move the cursor with a puzzle piece over one of them, the game crashes. The only workaround is to build all the tracks, leave the space for the stops, and then build the stations.

As for the subject of the topic, I prefer the Subway. I'm not really a planner, so subways are easier to build when the city is already developed.

i prefer the subway-GLR-el setup. it enables me to adjust for the area of the city...older areas tend to be elevated. suburbs i mainly use GLR. downtown i tend to use subways. i like the flexibility...rather than the stuck one style fits all of the monorail.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember that the transit team said that the bug can't be fixed

I have two light rail lines in my city, but mostly rail transport.

I like to use it as a semi-rapid transit system

simmy.uk go download the nam under mods & downloads. Plus you can get a bullet train from the stex that replaces the monorail and is very fast.

    Correct-o...

@sobol: But this shouldn't be as much of a problem thanks to draggable GLR...not as much need for puzzle pieces...just be careful when placing those starter pieces!

I've downloaded a bullet train mod for my monorail network. I found it from the Japanese BAT gallery. It fully converts the network into a elevated bullet train track and the network speed is 300 KPH, making it much faster than monorail. The new bullet trains zipping through my city beats monorail any day!

I still use subway too, it helps relieve the stress on my other networks. Plus, if your roads are in a grid pattern, you can go diagonal with subway, making it even more useful.

As much as possible I try to use all types of transit in my cities except GLR which I don't like.   I especially like to use monorail lines as they are very popular with my sims and make a tidy profit to boot.

My GLR says it is "draggable" but I still have to plop every piece, so I avoid using it as much, unless I'm making a pretty town. I use Elevated Rails and Subways, seeing as they give the most options to sims. Subway is best though, since the stations are only one square, and take up the least amount of space. I use heavy rail for my industry only.
