Best of Super Mario

so, I just beat all 96 levels to Super Mario World for the SNES.  Call me a dork, but at age 25 - I've never owned a console and thus, never had the resource to play that silly game all the way through.  Now, I've done that - and can supposedly move on with my life.

Mario has got to be the longest running franchise in video game history (sure, let's include the Donkey Kong Arcade).  A friend rented Super Paper Mario for the Wii, and although it's fun - it's incredibly easy.  But it's nice to see that happy plumber jumping around.  Just curious to see what y'all think the best Super Mario Game of all time is.

Super Mario World for the SNES is my vote - second would have to be Mario Kart for N64 or Sushine on th cube or the 3rd game for the NES.  WarioWare is just nuts, but has to be mentioned -honorably.  Anywho, post your thoughts...

super mario world is one of the best mario games, the other are mario RPG, and mario 64, also mario kart series.. paper mario in n64 is a little bit of joke.. however, the first title of super mario bros would be considered the best, because at that time, it was..

..mario is the biggest icon, bigger than mickey..

Hmm... never played Super Mario World. But I have played all three NES titles, though I've only beaten 2 and 3.

I remember playing Mario 64 when it first came out... it was.. way too different. Their mistake was going 3D with it. And making it so you punch enemies instead of jumping on them. Needless to day, Mario 64 sucks. Mario Kart 64, on the other hand, was a nice game. Crash Team Racing for the PS1 was better, though...

It must be remembered that if you've got an old 2D side scrolling series, taking it into 3D should be done with caution, as often it simply isn't the same and ends up being no good. Mario 64 sucked. Megaman X7 was meh (despite having great graphics and music). Duke Nukem 3D, on the other hand, was awesome. So it can be done successfully sometimes, if it's done right.

I think I rather liked Super Mario World for the SNES. But does Luigi's Mansion count? It's kinda got mario in it. And it's kinda cute. 3.gif

I agree that 3D was a bad way to go for Mario. I don't have so much of a problem with 3D, per se, but it was executed poorly. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine had serious perspective problems that made both of those games virtually unplayable for me. I couldn't tell where I was jumping or what I was hitting...

I have the same problems with Mario 64. I actually have that problem with a lot of 3D games, and I also tend to get lost really easily.

In general I don't really like 3D platformers, or really 3D games in general. I have my snes rpgs and sim city, and I'm fine with that. 3.gif

I liked the original Paper Mario a lot. It was somewhat entertaining, and it looked better than SCS.

For those who never played Super Mario World... get it any way possible! Buy a Wii and download it for 8 bucks, buy a used SNES and find a copy on eBay, or find a friend with the game and play it.

Personally, Super Mario Bros. 3 was the pinnacle of platforming... you haven't lived until you've used Kuribo's Shoe. The only Super Mario game that disappointed me was Sunshine... it's Mario with a water gun. It's a good game, but it's not Mario's best effort.

Super Mario World, by far. How can you go against riding Yoshi around? But SMB3 was an awesome game, it had many, many great moments that I enjoyed.

Oh, Luigi's Mansion counts in this consideration. I don't know if it will make the award show. haha. FYI: Anyone looking for good emulators - check out www.emulator-zone.com. That's where I got the SNES emulator for my Mac to play Super Mario World (got that rom from undisclosed location number 47). Anyway, I agree with a few of you about the 3D games. We SimCity nerds require a simple view, huh? But give it up to Sushine - for the effort at least.

Yeah emulators might be nice and all... I've done it before... but I don't condone it since they are illegal and probably shouldn't be mentioned here... I don't remember the rules about mentioning emulations, but I'd be on the safe side just in case.

Besides, most SNES games are best with the SNES controls while the keyboard and mouse can be awkward. 44.gif

I haven't played these in a way, but here's a list of what I think I like (in order):

    Super Mario 64

    Super Mario Bros.

    Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japanese)

    Super Mario Bros. 2 (American)

    Super Mario World

    Super Mario Bros. 3

    Super Paper Mario (Wii)

I liked all of these games a lot, including the ones at the bottom of the list. Super Paper Mario would probably be higher, but I didn't like the repetitive dialog (I guess that's typical or paper mario games?), and the story line just seemed odd & the characters seemed dimwitted, like a Fairy Odd Parents (Nickelodeon) script. All and all I enjoyed playing them all.

As for the super mario non-adventure games - I enjoyed playing Super Mario Kart (SNES, 64, GameCube), Mario's Tennis (Virtual Boy) and Super Mario Strikers (GameCube).

I couldn't stand the Mario Party games... probably because I'm a loner 4.gif. Although, the friends I do have would never be caught dead playing Mario anyway (I'm a 22yr old guy w/ friends my age).

I'm looking forward to trying Super Mario Galaxy (Wii), Mario Stikers Charged (Wii) and Mario Power Tennis (GC)

Ok, first off - sorry Mr. Llama... but i think we'll be just fine. 2.gif

And to the Poet, it's ok to like party games at our age. I'm just a few years older and I do it all the time.

anyway, great to see the feedback - keep 'em coming.

I would also have to put Super Mario World as my pick for the top Mario game. Number 2 would be Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES, and Mario Kart was always a fun party, diversionary game.

Reasons why I like Super Mario World:

    - It was the first iteration of Mario on a "next generation system" (well, at that time anyways).

    - Challenging. Definitely not an easy game, especially if you wanted to find all the secrets and what not.

    - Yoshi. I would do anything to get that dinosaur, even if it meant dying while trying to get him back.

    - Multiple paths. I think. I'm not sure if I'm mistaken but there were many paths you could take to beat a world. And you didn't have to complete all the levels.

    - And the Mario series was the only video game my mom and sister would play, so it was always fun to watch them play.

Multiple paths have been around prior to Super Mario World... but SMW had more options, I believe.  SMB3 had a few different paths and the original SMB had those warp pipes.  Anybody can beat SMB in 15 minutes using the optimal warp pipe scheme, but try to beat SMB going through al the levels. 44.gif

^ In SMW, you had to use keys to unlock alternate exits leading to certain areas. I think that there were 96 levels in total.

Mario Kart Double Dash is a shocking game, nowhere near as good as the Mario Kart on the SNES or the N54.

Definitely my vote goes to Super Mario World. I began my video game playing with SimCity for SNES and was soon playing SMW as well. Even now I can play SMW over and over again. Superfun. I have to say also that Super Mario Kart is one of the best racers in existence, too, right up there with the Gran Turismo series! Who doesn't love the red shell?

SMB3 for me in first, and then Mario 64.

As for the Mario Kart games, the best is easily Mario Kart DS!
