I ditto what bixel said.

Its pretty disheartening to look at this thread after doing spot nightlighting (you know, shine a light on the building, exclude/include stuff) all night. makes me feel bad 15.gif lol keep it up.

Looks outstanding friend.....

I can just imagine what you could do with The WTC Towers (2001) of course.

Keep up the fantastic work. 4.gif

That's awesome despite the UVW issue! You just need to "turn off" some of those windows. But that's already spectacular IMO, let me tell ya! 2.gif

If you have some bump and specular maps for the windows, you can enhance their deepness and they'll look more realistic.

thanks, and yeah, they do have an aweful lot of glow.  I'm still working on that.  I don't think that specular maps will help since mia shaders don't have that as far as I understand, they have more realistic settings and there really isn't much light to refelect at night.  Bump would just distort the reflections (and I do havea bump map on them simulating the strees put atop the windows by the weight of the building) although if I use a sperate object that illuminates the windows from the inside it could be faked... which is a pretty good idea, I can also simulate blinds by the use of translucent materials.  Thanks for the tip though! 4.gif

An odd problem for you. One day I started Max and no materials can be applied to anything except as a viewport background or environment map. I had this before but solved it by using the asset browser. Now not even that works. Any ideas? (I'm sure it's something really simple lol)

so you can't appy a material to an object, at all? are the objects frozen by any chance? do you have shaders that aren't supported by the renderer that you use, or are they just not visible in the view... that is they can render? I'm pretty stumpled.

I did have a problem where mia shader presets didn't work properly, and it was because of the installation of bat4max. Now currently it isn't installed (yet) and the shader presets work fine.

but I have no clue what's going on! Maybe for some reason plugins aren't being loaded right.

Auto!! Great work on texture cutting!

It would come very handy since I've managed to loose the one I used in Lippo.

Couple of notes on the material setup (one for night windows).

In this material all you want to only 2 things - light coming from the windows and also (or may be) the reflections in them. What you DON'T want to see is the windows themselves (I mean glass planes). This means that this material should defuse ANYTHING - hence either black in defuse channel (in case of standard material, or 0 if you use Arch&Design one. this way lights will NOT affect the appearance of windows.

This is important!! If you look at the sample of your red glowing material you'll see that it affected by light it is lighter in the area where direct light reaches it and darker (more saturated) in the shadow. This is exactly caused by the fact that you material has some diffusion going on...

@toxicpiano: I would try that, but I have no clue what would cause it.  I would contanct technical support from autodesk.

@simfox: thanks for the suggestion.  My windows don't have diffuse, but the teapot did.  Could the glow material have diffuse color with it though?

    here's another preview:

Tokyo?  (I hope you don't destroy it, Godzillaman 3.gif j/k...)

thanks, and I will release it some time, I'm coming close to finishing it.  What I really need to do is find some spare time! (and stop doing all these renders 3.gif)

haha, I don't think it'll get much further than that... I have very little free time so what I tend to do now is make lots of long high quality renders, and do little modelling... this way I produce eye pleasing results with least amount of input (and my mouse just died... again)

    base finsihed

the base is at completion.  I'm probably not going to get to render a final version tonight, I'll just do a draft export to see if it all goes well.  Test it out some time miday tomorrow if I have time.... hold on I can't install the game.

I'll see what it looks like in the reader application, but I need someone to test it out ingame for me.  And to take hihg resolution zoom 6 pictures encompassing the whole building in a decent simcity environment both day and night (a high res monitor helps).  So far I have Interchange in line for that job.  But the test version won't be ready until a couple more days (weeks? hopefully not!)

nope! 41.gif  but I did just install bat4max.  This is where 3ds max will start (maybe soon) acting up.  It did before especially the mi arch&design shader (presets).

here are the final night previews.  Unfortunatly I'm out of time tonight so I won't be able to start them until tomorrow night.  The ones that I"ll be doing tomoorw night will be of lower quality and shouldn't take too long.  I'll try again *hopes and prays* to install simcity, but I think there's something wrong with the disk because it's having trouble reading simcity1.dat...

    as promised:

hmm... spent too much time in the chemistry lab today (made a batch of about 50g of a chemical that I don't even know the name of).  I've got another building on the list for rendering which I"ll probably start tomorow.  Not quite sure when it'll be done though.  So my buest guess is that I'll try rendering on thursday of this building?  It wil be a lower quality test render in which I"ll do the modding and try testing it out and send out to some more ppl to test out.  But this is assuming that I do have time (which I probably won't... I have to go back to the lab again tomorrow and them make it back to a school really fast to fill out some paperwork... god things suddenly get so stressful! 32.gif)

You didnt have school off? Things are real nice and easy down here in Texas, we just wrapped up finals last week. 2nd semester starts tomorrow 15.gif I am gonna miss high school and its going by so fast. 3 semesters left... Also i officially am eliminated from validictorian race, 17 people left with 4.9 GPAs in my class lol

My first semester was stressful, i shudder to think about what this one will bring with all my AP classes...

we did have school off, this is when I wen to cancun 10.gif

but it's starting back off really hard so that everyone could take it a bit easier when state testing and ap testing and the 3ds semsetsr finals come.  Plus I just overloaded my self with work based on the classes I took... but I manage (not a straight A student, but it isn't all about the grades, is it?  I'd rather have a better free education than have a good gpa... if I wanted a good gpa I should have taken easy classes, not classes that make you work down to the last drop of energy you have in you.)

oh, well the schools were closed for students and staff, but the university was still opened for staff... I slipped in there (only one door in the whole building where I work at is opened!) to do some extra work... turned out to be the whole day... I learned a lot there too.
