So ... we had GTA 1, 2, 3, VC, SA ... shouldn't this be GTA 6? Do VC and SA not count anymore?

It would be like EA releasing a Need For Speed 4 now, since the last numbered release was Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit.. since which we've had (on PC) NFS: V-Rally 2, NFS: High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed, Hot Pursuit 2, Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted, and Carbon... 3.gif

Nothing wrong with skipping a number. Nobody misses Leisure Suit Larry 4 2.gif

I wonder where the setting would be, since LC,VC and SA were already mentioned on the original game. Some rumors are revolving around London and Chicago.

Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas, and London were all covered in the original game (and expansion pack), but that didn't stop them from reusing them in GTA 3, VC, and SA. A remake of GTA London 1961 or GTA London 1969 would be interesting.

Also interesting would be the time period: GTA 1 & 2 had no real set time period ... in the newer ones, we've had the 70s, 80s, and early 90s so far - will they be brazen enough to do a more modern-era game, or jump back to another time? (How about 1940's Chicago? I heard there was a little bit of gang activity back then... 2.gif )

ehm.. hjanfield... you're not right about the naming.

in fact, LC, VC and SA are all together GTA III, in honor of the first GTA with the 3 cities LC, VC and SA. next step is GTA 4, further the naming comes from rockstar/take2, and i think they know what they do/are right about the IV...

a remake of gta london would be, considering the previous development, a logical sequel.

but the underline says "things will be different", what might tell everyone that they do something totally new and not go on with remaking previous GTAs.

on the other hand, rumours are that the next GTA will be european based, whats a difference to previous titles, and london is righthand driving, so another thing that's different, as the underline says.

so aswell the pro-london and the anti-london ideas can be seen in the underline.

    about the storyline...

we had GTA LC in the mid-90s, GTA VC in the late 70s, early 80s, and we have GTA SA in the early 90s, halfway parallel to GTA LC (best evidence for the LC/SA thing is claude and catalina flying to LC at about 1/3 progress in GTA SA, and LC beginning with a robbery performed by claude and catalina)

concerning gangs, london would be the best choice because of the long tradition in gangs, even among youths (as recent events show) but it's not sure that GTA IV will go on with gang-stuff

I don't think they'll do a backshift in time, and if so, they would only go back to the 60s to fit into the time setting of GTA London

but all the thoughts have an end this thursday, but one thing's for sure: it'll exceed all expectations

Alright! I hope they release a PC version too, like they always did. But that's next generation graphics we're talking here (PS3 and XBox 360)...

lol GTA Tampa in the 40's

I don't know if you know, but we used to be known as "Little Chicago" due to our extreme crime and Mafia crap.

Tampa was the #2 port for narcotics in that time period :-p

I wonder if it's JUST Liberty City or are there other cities and/or the countryside...

Still, it looks pretty cool so far; can't wait for more information!

hm... thinking of the size of new york (the more than obvious original) and what's shown in the trailer, it seems like it's just one giant town... maybe some surrounding landscape aswell, hard to tell that for sure, the trailer concentrates on cityskape... looks like we gotta wait for another trailer

Well if we all remember from GTA 3, Shoreside Vale (the 3rd 'island') was actually mainland America.

The only reason you couldnt access the countryside or possibly other parts of the city, was because the tunnel through the hills had collapsed (a way of preventing the player from leaving).

Maybe that tunnel will be open in this game, and you can travel outside the city into the countryside and do exchanges with drug dealers and such in abandoned huts or towns.

yes, shoreside vale is kinda the mainland america.

but for GTA 3 LC and GTA VC counts the same: it's a very very stylized map of the original cities NYC and Miami. For GTA SA, it's morely the landscape that's stylized, the cities are more shrunk to the engine's potential than stylized.

now, in GTA IV, Liberty City seems to be a realistic copy of NYC, at least a million times more realistic than the previous stylized copy of GTA 3.

also, you can realise a development in the maps from a morely creative map (LC) to a morely realistic map (SA), concerning the cities, and as far as the trailer allows to conclude, the LC in GTA IV will be even more realistic than the cities of GTA SA, what has been far away in GTA 3 and realized very schematic in GTA VC

so, long story short, I don't think your tunnel idea, mayorcain, will be realised as in opening the tunnel in shoreside vale to offset landscape, it seems to be more likely that nyc tunnels like holland tunnel or lincoln tunnel are open (similar to the big tunnel in GTA3) and that the landscape of nyc, on the nj side, will be simulated, but as usual cut off via water. If there's any landscape at all. maybe they went back to a city-only scenary, but with incredible detail on the cities (trailer gives already some feelings of the enormous amount of detail) and a extreme wide city spread to give the feeling of actually being in a metropolis like new york.

ehm... reading the above IDEA(!!) again, it seems, thinking of the landscape of GTA SA, not that far off actually.

    why?

Think of the original copied in GTA SA: Los Angeles, San Franciso and Las Vegas. They are far away from each other with all different landscapes in between. more or less exactly copied in GTA SA.

Now, NYC as the original of the new Liberty City, we don't need much landscape to simulate the area because there's not that much landscape actually (at least not too close to the city core)... so if I were the producer/level designer, I would go for a stunningly big and detailed city and only do a rough draft of the landscape, similar to what was the landscape in GTA 3, instead of designing a vast landscape.

Much speculation, I know, but that's what known facts of the released GTA games (I used to own them all) and leaked info of GTA IV plus the trailer compared with each other show me as probably right

I'm hoping, though not at all expecting, that IV will be a sort of 'State of Liberty', and that it will include versions of other New York cities, such as Buffalo (Perhaps call it 'bison' or some such thing'), Syracuse, Saratoga (Actually pretty likely, considering the last game's introduction of gambling, a city with a race track would just seem proper. Though they'd probably go with Atlantic City because it's closer to NYC), and especially Albany, my home town.

    [ramble warning]

I know they could have fun with the Egg. The Pepsi, now Times Union, arena would probably be renamed the Sprunk, Liberty Tree, or Times Useless arena. The roads and highways are much messier than you could imagine, so it wouldn't be hard to come up with some fun city layouts. Plus, the game's classic 'broken bridge' limit could be done as a reference to current events, considering Albany's problem with keeping roads and highways in one place...

Anyway, it was an effective trailer. Before I saw it, I planned not to buy it because I don't have a compatible system or even an HDTV, and it just wasn't worth however many hundreds of dollars. I'm now reconsidering.

Now all we need to make the GTA series better is GTA V: North America 3.gif

From what I read, GTA IV will NOT be a playstation exclusive so you don't NECESSARILY have to buy a PS3.

no gta was ever ps exclusive... I think they do it just the same way they've done it with GTA SA, first release it for ps, then for pc after a few months

The trailer is a nod to 1998's Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance (very fitting).  The music is Pruit Igoe by Philip Glass.

Why wouldn't you buy a PS3? It'll drop by $50 by December, another $100 next year. By that time all the good games will be "classics" and sell for $20, I can buy the PS3 in the summer of 2008 for $450, and a bevy of games for $100. GTA4 and Metal Gear Solid is on the top of my list.

I don't care how "cool" Halo is... XBox games don't come close to the gameplay achieved by PlayStation exclusives like the MGS and Final Fantasy series.

And I don't care what the critics say, I believe PS3 will end up being the champion, yet again. Wait and see, my friends, wait and see.
