Could you please show me? The "Apply" button on the Gmax Material Editor only textures whole objects.

Could someone please show me step-by-step how to texture faces in gmax? When I apply textures by the "Apply" button on the Gmax Material Editor, it textures the entire object only.

Make a box. Right click on the box, and go to "Convert to" and convert it into an editable polygon. Then on the menu to the right, at the top there should be some icons of dots and lines and squares and stuff. Hover your mouse over them to find out what they are called. Those are your selection options. Click on the icon for selecting faces. Then select a face on your cube. Then apply your material to it.

You can also try selecting the face/polygon, and then "Detach"ing it (the button is on the right menu pane, you'll have to scroll down and look for it). Make sure you're in the modifier tab (at the top, the tab that has a blue curve on it, the second tab from the left).

Then it will be a separate object which you can texture as normal. That's what I've always done with that situation.

Press the "prnt scrn" (or "Print Screen") key on your keyboard. It is probably to the right of F12, and above Insert.

Then open an image editing program, like Photoshop, or the GIMP (a free program which is similar to Photoshop, search google for it), make a blank file, and go to edit>paste.

Then you need to upload the image at someplace like imageshack.com or photobucket.com. They will give you an address to your image. Then when you're making a post here, click on the little icon with a mountain and sun in it, and copy/paste the address of your picture into the box.

O boy, I'm in trouble now. One of the most helpful feature of gmax is the ability to move objects restricted to an axis. Some how I turned it off and I need it back on again. As all of us know, this feature is very important!

does anyone know how to convert bat models to props. I have created a new tower which has been exported in three sections. I have used the plugins manager to convert them to props however, i can't get the nightlights to show up in the game anymore because the buidling is a prop. Can anyone help?

Ther is no radical difference between US measurements and SC4 measurements. Door in US is about as (physically) tall as in Europe or Asia where metric system is used. So in this sense there is NO need for any rescale.

Of course you may want to stretch things up to compensate for squashing effect of game projection. To do so you would need to scale stuff 133% on Z axis. (group everything before that).

but if I change the measurements to meters, the grid doesn't change. If the length of 1 large square is 16m, and I change it to US, the 1 large square is 16ft long.

*edit* nevermind i fixed it... but now my building is too large...

What does the size of the squares on the grid matter? It is totally arbitrary value.

As long as you'll model everything to the real life sizes you'll be all right no matter what of the unit system you are using. But you must make sure the you are in real world units (be them feet or meters). Your problem is most likely due to the fact that you were modeling

I know it sounds boring but it is important to understand these basics. Without them you'll be constantly running into all sorts of problems that otherwise would be easy to avoid.quote>

Actually i forgot to set "1 unit = 1m" in preferences. Once I changed it, I scaled the building down to 30.48% of its original size.

Go the the Tab with the Hammer (to the far right of the create, modify tabs)

Below you will find the BAT button. Find the Preview rollout, and pick a good view, at zoom 5. Then show it off in your BAT thread, and let us comment on it. If it is good enough, you could release it. (Check out the tutorial in the omnibus, under BAT LE Tutorials, called the BAT Essentials.)

Edit: (again) I have a UVW map on my box, and I put the texture on it. Now, the texture is on the top of the box, and is not on the sides. I want the texture on one of the sides, and not the others. I want to put a seperate or different texture on the other walls. How do I do this?

    Hi Jasoncw,

Thanks again! I really apreciated your quick help about the topic.

I met another problem today --- the "code = 6" error when rendering in 3dsmax. I searched for a few dialogues about this, but can't find any answers. Do you have any idea how I can solve this? (Below the "Render BAT" button, I got "Current Material Libraries: Library not loaded. Night library will not be used.")

It's my first try on making a SC4 building, so my focus is to at least having a day-time building in my game...30.gif

BTW, if any guy here meets the same [makeshortcut] problem, I suggest you simply find and use the "gamepacks\BAT\SC4BatLauncher.exe" in your gmax root directory, and it's working already.

    Mrqs: That's modern architecture, duh...

I guess there are some problems with how BAT for Max applies the FSH files to the 3ds file and at the moment it looks like you have none of the texture FSH files on your 3ds model. I know Autovino was having some similar problems, maybe drop him a PM...

does GMAX have feature self-illumination (glow effect at night)? I always use nightwindow or lighting effect. But i think self-illumination would be very helpful in this case. Since my PC is quite slow, adding some lighting effect will slow down my work and PC.

does anyone know how to self-illumination window in GMAX?

it's been 6 month since i stopped doing BAT, i almost forget how to do this... ^^

In the material editor there's a bit about it. I think it's underneath opacity somewhere.

It's not very good though. You'll have to experiment with it to see if it's useful for you.

AsianEvolusioner:  The BAT Essentials tutorial probably has something about it.  But it's in the material editor, at the top near where it has the opacity stuff.  But like I said, it's not very good, you're probably not doing anything wrong.

It's easier to remake it, but there is a link to a tutorial on how to convert in the BAT Mega FAQ.

There's a ton of stuff written about 3ds Max here.  BAT4Max can be found in the modds and downloads section of this site, and it includes instructions.  There's also a lot written about it in the forums, and there's also the troubleshooting thread, which has solutions for most common problems.  After reading all of that, you can post questions in the 3ds Max Troubleshooting thread.

Nemesis666:  I don't know.  Try pressing "x" on your keyboard.  If that doesn't do it, then there's probably some setting somewhere in preferences or something.  Also, at the bottom of the screen you can type in movements.  And if you set up snaps, then it will snap to the grid which is orthogonal.
