Local ( Dallas Area) Billionaire Tom Hicks

Buys Liverpool Football Club for 1/2 a Billion

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=407155&cc=3888

But he dosnt seem to have enough money to get some pitching for the Texas Rangers

Whats the Vibe over there with an american buying one of the priemier franchises in

england?

A bit of a warning to you Tom Hicks is well known for dismanteling teams, removing high priced players to become financialy viable and seem to be more concerned about the bottom line then in fielding a  team that has a chance at winning a championship.

Just a heads up.

Because the Premier league is the world most popular tv-sport and owning a team from there gives you much money, more than those crappy yankee sportleagues like NFL or NHL.

Allthough I'm a ManU fan, I hope that Hyypi

Krio, this is the second post where you have insulted America. I suggest you watch yourself. The NFL is the most powerful league in the world, and NHL is a Canadian league that has been transplanted to the US. Owners own, but I doubt that this will be a hands-on leader. Then again, spend half a billion on a team, I guess you can do what you want.

If american football is so great, why it is popular only in U.S? Players has high salaries, because people want to see are the players worth of all that money. I watched Super Bowl and it was so boring - will they move even 5 meters in those funny outfits. Rugby is better, because players don't wear 50 kilos of equipments. I don't care if the hockey and NHL is from Canada, it is still crappy sport and I don't have a clue why it has more tv time here Finland when majority of youngster prefer to football start as their hobby than ice hockey. Baseball is only yankee sport what I like to watch, but why in the hell winners of the american baseball league are World Series winners when only one canadaian team plays with yankees?

Soccer players get an extraordinary amount of money as well. People at the top of their game win big. What's your point?

I watched Super Bowl and it was so boringquote>

Maybe because you don't know the game? A lot of English people like cricket, while I think it's just weird. That's mostly because I don't know what the hell is going on on that field. A lot of sports are weird or boring if you don't know how they're played.

Because the good professional teams are American? Because other countries don't care enough about baseball to get bigger teams?

Then again, spend half a billion on a team, I guess you can do what you want.quote>

Yup. It's now HIS party. He can cry if he wants to.

Half a billion though. Imagine spending that.

Who here would buy a sports club with that? (Which one?) I think I might go with a nice little stake in an F1 team.36.gif

Is Liverpool FC any good by the way?

Dude...why are you so intolerant? Haha...

Anyway MLB teams do have players from all over the world (typically Carribean, South America, North America and Japan)...I guess that's one legit reason it's called the "World Series" even granted that most teams are in the USA.

It would be named North American Cup or something else. World Series mean, that there should be teams from other countries than one from Canada. Few Mexican and Cuban teams would make it more World Series. IMO, if European baseballorganization would assemble a European Baseball League, it should have the of "World Series".

JanYpe: there are as good baseball teams in Japan and Cuba, but they can't travel every week from their home countries to compete with 29 yankee and canadian teams. If the is "Major League" or "North American Cup" it won't be mediasexy and won't sell as good as "World Series".

Krio: hahah, yeah it is cold here too man. Still I understand your point of view, just don't be so straight forward. Not too many people understand such behavior around here.

gshmails: NFL is the biggest "american football league" in the world, but the English Premier league (football) is the most watched (hence the biggest) league of any sport in the world. I don't really care cause I am not English, I am just stating facts.

Wikipedia, about FA premier league:"It is the world's most watched sporting league and most lucrative football league, followed by over a billion people".

So over to LFC;

-yes I don't think there will be much change in LFC at all, and I don't think they'll throw out Hypiaa!

JanYpe: Liverpool is currently 3'rd in the worlds toughest football league, if that tells you anything. 2.gif

take care,

So its a Year later with Liverpool's new owner Tom Hicks.

    What happened?

We hear nothing about  how this other team of his is doing. Or how he is viewed  as an owner there.

Brits crying bout how americans run their team.

Brain Blast! why don't they buy the team and stop complianing? I plan to grow up and dismantle all the major teams until i mercy them into changing it to soccer, and replacing all the soccer channels with ESPN and NFL Network.

Well, the Liverpool fans aren't happy about how the club is being run at the moment. They've had protests against them and want either another company called D.I.C. (Dubai Investment Capital) to buy them or there's another plan where fans join together to buy the club. (Information on the fans' buyout plans can be found here.)

The main problems they're having is that Liverpool want a new stadium and their owners keep running into problems and keep redesigning the stadium. Hicks and Gillett said that they would start the building work a long time ago and it hasn't started yet.

Also, Liverpool desperately want to win the League as they haven't won it for 18 years but at the moment they're in 5th place just below the team which I support, Everton who are in 4th, who are Liverpool's rivals in the city with their grounds being less than a mile apart. They are way behind the top three of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.

But the biggest problem the fans have with them is that they've been publicly criticising the team's manager, Rafa Benitez, saying that he should "get on with the job and stop complaining about wanting new players" and at one point even lined up another person to become manager if they sacked him.

A couple of reports from the local newspaper about the owners "One Year On" can be found here and here.

I personally hate football, its no longer a game it ALL about the money these days and its just become a grotesque sport. Even more so with the proposals put forward by the English Premiership about playing matches all around the world.............yet more money making.

I'm sticking to Rugby, much more enjoyable...

That's weird. It seems to me that when wealthy people buyout sports teams, it gives them a chance to their out their sports fantasy vicariously. Why did this billionaire, who I've never heard of, decide on this particular investment?

English football is one of the most lucrative and wealthiest sport leagues anywhere in the world. With hundreds of millions being made through fans, international merchandise and Television rights.

Personally Im a keen supporter of smaller, locally owned clubs. My local club which is Norwich City FC has been in the premiership before but currently resides in the Championship. It's a nice size, big enough to be on TV sometimes but not too big as to be taken over by some American geezer.

Well, seeing as Tom Hicks traded the soon-to-be greatest baseball player ever to the Yankees for a player he would trade a away 2 years later, I don't think that Liverpools gonna be any good for a while 9.gif
