This CJ is amazing. I can't wait for the Schulmaniacs to develop further... How many cats to you own?

dried spaghetti is particularly useful in the furnishing industry. With care and twine, bathmats twenty feet square can be built from the stuff! If it matters, i vote 2...explore! explore!

Devonshire: The Beasts of the East

The massive colonial expansion to the south led to a severe strain on natural resources. The Schulminions have always tried to be reasonably good stewards of their resources, but tripling the population has made resources at bit more scarce. Both Gran Maru and Atkinos became larger than any town on the home island. The fleets of ships being built and the massive construction strained the forest supplies. New resources needed to be secured. The district governors met with the Supreme Wirdle at Wirtyplace to determine a course of action. It was decided to send a fleet of exploration to the east. The World Ocean had to that point only been sailed for a distance of a few miles from shore. Now, it would be fully explored and charted. The expedition would be led by three renowned naval heroes: Captain Brian Driver, Captain Splunt, and Captain Erich von Bremerhaven. Coordinating their efforts was newly-appointed Admiral Miles Macintosh. Admiral Macintosh was renowned and admired for his ability to process complicated problems and render great results as needed. His technical prowess developed as a result of his aversion to windows, which began when he was a child. To escape windows, he chose a life at sea and became an expert at charting new territories and generating quality maps of new territories. The Admiral commissioned a fleet of 60 ships for the great exploration of the east. Three groups of 20 would each be commanded by a Fleet Captain (as the new rank was bestowed upon the three leaders by the Supreme Wirdle). Macintosh's flagship, The SS Apple, would lead the way.

    armadafk2.jpg

The Eastern Fleet of Discovery, as shown in a period engraving

The fleet assembled at Smightower and stored provisions for the journey. Crew members were recruited across the realm. Skilled sailors were needed, of course, but other specialists were also sought. Cartographers, botanists, biologists, chemists, civil engineers and even journalists joined the journey. Let's examine a sample of the crew manifest from Fleet Captain Splunt's flagship, the SS Nikonia.

    RANK NAME JOB TITLE
Fleet Captain Splunt Commander, First Fleet; Captain, SS Nikonia
Commander Wayne Irmo First Officer, SS Nikonia
Lieutenant Jack Monkaroo Second Officer and Chief Simian, SS Nikonia
Lieutenant Jorge Curioso Third Officer and Asst. Chief Simian
    2nd Lieutenant Grape Ape Navigator
2nd Lieutenant Ty Bonsai Biologist, Plush Animal Specialist
Ensign Simon Skylark Ground Transportation Specialist
    Ensign Sidney Saturn Quartermaster
Crewman Llama Llarry Waste Management & Disposal
Crewman Ty Dangles Biologist, Plush Animal Specialist Understudy
Jr. Deputy Crewman Mets Puppy Leak Detector
Asst. Jr. Deputy Crewman Baby Birdy Provider of Aerial Views

As the launch date for the fleet approached, excitement built to almost untenable levels across the nation. When the day finally arrived, over 10,000 Schulminions gathered around the tower and along the shore to watch the largest fleet ever assembled depart for unknown territory.

    flagshipxb5.jpg

The gallant crew of the SS Nikonia salutes the crowd as they head out to sea

A fairly uneventful sail ensued as the fleet headed east. The World Ocean was usually calm. A gentle breeze gave the fleet some difficulty as they sailed. Despite the slow going, spirits remained high. After a few course corrections, the fleet proceeded due east. Saturday morning, right after breakfast, Crewman Nano Ipod aboard the SS Apple spotted land. The ships broke formation to explore and chart the coast. This data would be processed by Admiral Macintosh to decide upon a landing area. The crew noticed the lush green hills which rose from the shore and were impressed with the bounty of the wildlife.

Some interesting topographical features were noted, including one not found in previously explored areas - a small inlet was found, leading inland to an unknown source in the hills beyond. Admiral Macintosh decided the fleet would anchor in this inlet for safety. Once safely anchored, the crew landed and began setting up camp.

Let's explore with the crew the new land in the east.

    creek2ha2.jpg

The approach to the inlet was a bit rocky. Luckily, the Fleet Captains had extensive experience and all ships made it through successfully.

    creek3rs3.jpg

    creek4ox3.jpg

    creek5lt5.jpg

The shores looked like a good place to set up camp.

    creek6ks3.jpg

It was a bit steeper as the ships approached the end of the inlet.

    creek1gb5.jpg

The surveying team generated this map of the inlet after scouting the area. The inlet was named Devon Creek.

    creek7ag2.jpg

    creek8ck4.jpg

The steep shore offered protection from the elements but made transporting provisions from ship to shore rather difficult.

Scouting expeditions fanned out from the temporary base to explore the surrounding areas. Reports came back about abundant flora and fauna. The land was fairly hilly and moderately forested. Let's review excerpts of some of the reports from the expedition, housed in the archives in Explorers Hall in Smightower.

    Cartography Report #4

    Lt. Tucky M. Wise

We left camp at 0800 and headed east. We encountered some low hills but could see larger ones off in the distance, further east. The first landform we encountered is shown below:

    greenhills1nd3.jpg

The green hill sloped gently on the leading edge and sharply on the trailing edge. Nearby we found the following low rise:

    greenhills5dw6.jpg

    greenhills3ra1.jpg

Here, the more gentle slopes were intermittently forested. As we progressed east, we encountered higher hills, some of which had steeper inclines on their faces, as shown below:

    greenhills4jj8.jpg

    greenhills6qx7.jpg

The steep rock face seen in the hill above rises to the highest points yet seen in this region. We found a valley between two ridges, offering us passage to points further on.

    valleynd0.jpg

Large ridges can be seen further on. We will continue east to explore this hilly region in the coming days.

While in the archives, we can also review this botanists' report.

    Botanist Report #2

    Commander Worf Rozhenko

We continue to encounter both familiar and new plant forms as we travel with the scouting party. Many trees are familiar, but we did run across this tree again as we surveyed the shore:

    dogwoodyw6.jpg

This understory tree with cruciform white flowers has been found along the creek and around forest margins. It was first spotted by Santos L. Halper. Halper named it the dog tree because of its distinctive bark. We discussed this and decided a better name would be the dogwood tree.

In the thicker parts of the forest, we encountered small purple flowers we had never seen before. Deputy Botantist Niles Crane assisted with the discovery and cataloguing of the Purple Maris, shown below.

    forestflower1bo3.jpg

The biology team also had some discoveries to make.

    Biological Survey #3

    Ty Dangles, Biologist

We continued to encounter large game animals as we explored the areas south and east of base camp. We found an abundance of deer and brown bears as well as a herd of wild horses. Additionally, we found a large moose.

    moose1cw4.jpg

    10pointwhitetaileddeerhjc9.jpg

    horse1hm8.jpg

New to our experience were some smaller animals, not found on Schulmanicus or in the Atkinos Islands. These are our latest discoveries:

    foxcv9.jpg

The fox (above) and hedgehog (below) are new species to add to our textbooks.

    hedgehogti1.jpg

A new species of turtle, named the Ninjateen, was found near a pizza deposit.

    turtlelv6.jpg

Yesterday, after a week of fruitless forays into the forest, we were finally able to spot the elusive Mindra owl.

The massive expedition sent scouting parties in every direction, exploring the coast and the hilly interior. It was clear that this land was no small island like what had been discovered before. This was, like Schulmania, either a huge island or a part of something even bigger. The way to determine what the nature of the land is to explore it. Thus, the scouts pressed farther inland, making even more discoveries as they went.

Impressive natural-historical update there. Beautiful water modd you have on that river and those rocks in the bottom of it are so realistic. Very pretty greenery and the fauna is looking great.

*Charlie Brown is also looking forward to the continuation of the trip 3.gif*
