East Devonshire: What Have We Here?

This update was corrupted in the May 2008 Hack Attack. Please click [here] to see it in its entirety.

The backwoods of eastern Devonshire remain mostly unexplored. The steep cliffs make passage difficult. But, development pressure pushes the frontier ever eastward. Eventually, a settlement would cross the plateau and establish a foothold on the rolling hills beyond. Not much exploring has been done in that direction. But, an expedition led by Bureau of Feline Affairs Governor-General H. J. “Hoppy” Franciflora and a large team of humanoid and feline Schulminions would solve that dilemma. The well-equipped team would travel as far as possible to the east. What lies beyond? Exotic creatures like what was found in Wirdleonia? Dazzling new landforms?  Secret treasures? Only one way to find out…

    Hoppy_State_Portrait.jpg

    H. J. “Hoppy” Franciflora, Governor-General and Expedition Commander

Off they went, a large expedition, headed east across the mountains of eastern Devonshire, in search of something – they know not what. The group was provisioned well enough to survive months in the wilderness. Anything that was findable would be found.

The first night, the expedition camped out n the wooded hillsides due east of Monkey Power Mountain. Around the campfire, different members of the group shared their visions of what may be found in the new lands beyond the cliffs. Let’s listen in on these stories told in the flickering firelight. Larry, Darryl & Darryl tell their tale first.

We see a land like Wirdleonia – one rich in game and full of exciting new hunting grounds. All of the exotic animals we have learned about live there – all plump and juicy and ready to be caught. Maybe there, they are extra slow and even easier to catch!

    mixed3.jpg

All of that meat, just ready to be caught! Wow, what a vision. We hear next from veteran explorer Baby Monkey. His vision, one which only a monkey could love.

I imagine a land perfect for monkeys. Cats are welcome too of course. But, a homeland for monkeys, full of plump and juicy bananas. And lots of vines to swing from. Now, that would be a great new land to discover!

    mbp.jpg

Everyone chuckled at this vision. Especially when Baby Monkey suggested a statue of himself right in the middle of the town. After all, who could believe there would be a place where monkeys were the star attraction? Unless of course there was a bigger statue of the Supreme Wirdle somewhere even more prominent. Next up, the least imaginative member of the expedition, Homer J. Simpsoid.

Umm, I think it’ll have lots of trees and stuff. And hills – gotta have them. Yeah, and some bushes too. And rock, don’t forget rocks. Hard and pokey ones.

    homer1.jpg

Prince Excalibur laughed and said that Homer’s prediction was the one most likely to come true. Everyone got a good chuckle out of that. When asked about what he expected to find, he said he would be content to sit back and recline in a place just like home – on Schulmanicus. There is no place like home, the prince thought.

    PIBbeg.jpg

He could see himself having a snack sitting on the grounds of New Busscastle, enjoying the local fish. Who wouldn’t want this dream to come true?

All eyes turned to the BFA Governor General. H. J. Franciflora, “Hoppy” to his friends, was a wise and very cultured cat. As the older brother of the Supreme Wirdle, he serves as a most esteemed role model for cats across the realm. What is his dream for what they find? He began

I like the idea of a castle like what we have at home. But, I can see one even grander that old Busscastle itself. After all, that was built many centuries ago. I’ll bet by now there could be castles ten times as big! Imagine a giant castle with giant buildings all around it, sitting high on a mountaintop. How exciting!

    1-200.jpg

Climbing the steep Devonshire hills, reaching the top of the mountain, one would gaze upon a castle fit for the Supreme Wirdle herself – but big enough for all of Schulmania!

    2-200.jpg

As one crests the summit, massive stone walls surround the compound. The grounds of the area would dwarf the whole town of Busscastle!

    4-200.jpg

Breathless, one would be equally awed by the majestic vistas behind and giant pinnacles of the castle beyond. Truly a marvel suited for a fairy tale. His story made them all think back to the fairy tale castles of their kittenhood.

    3-200.jpg

Beyond the walls, a garden of delights for the castle residents and guests. The most perfect hunting grounds imaginable, filled with the plumpest rodents and the juiciest birds. Perfect places to sun oneself and graceful trees upon which to climb. This would be paradise.

    5-200.jpg

On cold or rainy days, cats could enter the fabulous castle and look out of high windows, safe from the elements. Perhaps, on a lazy sunny afternoon, a cat could head to the upper windows and try swatting a bird right out of the air. Now, that’s a castle fit for a cat!

One expedition member, Patty Crab, interrupted. Patty was a homebuilder and wanted to know specifics about the architecture of said fantasy castle. So, he diverted and described the castle for his rapt audience.

    6-200.jpg

    7-200.jpg

A tall castle with windows all around would provide great places to look out of windows and see all that goes on in the vast new realm. Tall spires would be great viewpoints and great places to swat at birds. What could be finer?

    8-200.jpg

    9-200.jpg

And walls to climb and look out over the vast new domains… hunting grounds filled with the plumpest and juiciest prey imaginable… that would be fantastic! But, why stop there? Imagine if there was also a castle church and a castle town!

    10-200.jpg

Not like the ones we have back home, though they are very nice. I mean something full of spires and pinnacles – a castle church in the truest sense of the word.

    11-200.jpg

Imagine a cathedral as grand and magnificent in scope as the castle – a perfect complement to it. One surrounded by places for cats to climb and sun after services. Ledges offer great views for cats who like to look down on everone.

    12-200.jpg

A castle equal in scale and grandeur to the main house…

    13-200.jpg

With spires that pierce the heavens

    14-200.jpg

Such a magnificent cathedral could inspire from afar as well as within its walls.

The Governor General paused a moment to catch his breath. Before he could resume, Wolfgang Amadeus Meowzart broke into some sort of operetta. After a few rousing verses of the Meow Mix Theme Song, he prepared to resume. Meowzart did ask him where everyone else lived, if the castle was so grand. He continued…

The whole town would be surrounded by a magnificent wall and filled with nice modern buildings of grandeur and beauty.

    15-200.jpg

The wall would be a great place for cats to jump down and catch unsuspecting prey!

    16-200.jpg
Every town entrance would feature a restaurant serving every variety of Fancy Feast ever made, plus a fine selection of deluxe scratching posts. I hear Fancy Feast is great on crackers.

    17-200.jpg

Or perhaps some Fancy Feast tapas?

    18-200.jpg

And great commercial spaces and of course a massive civic area for administration of the fabulous new town!

    19-200.jpg

The civic palace would be just as grand as the private one. The town would be the envy of all Schulmania!

Well, enough story time! I don’t want you to fall asleep in the middle of the story.

    index_001.jpg

Oops, too late for the Admiral!

     So, back to the exploring…

After sixteen days, the expedition descends the cliffs and begins in earnest the full-scale exploration of eastern Devonshire. Using maps drawn by the first expedition, travel has been comparatively quick. The smooth, eroded hills are moderately forested and there is plenty of game. Special Emissary Kyle J. Johnson, dispatched by the Supreme Wirdle herself to accompany the team, led the way into the prey-rich hills which stretch well off into the distance.

    deer1.jpg

Kyle, making good time in the #48 wagon, led the group into a valley for the day’s campsite.

Interestingly enough, as the party made their way further inland, they found the terrain to be roughly the same but the vegetation began to change. There were fewer large trees and more of the small shrubby bushes. A few astute observers also noticed that it was a bit breezier. Meteorologist X. P. Simms recorded an average 29% increase in average wind speed from the first month’s data. The winds predominantly came from the east, which was different than usual. And, on occasion, there was a strange odor in the air. A faint one; humans would not have noticed it.

    2stuff.jpg

The group was now further east than anyone ever had ventured before. How exciting!

Not long after that, the explorers found a lake. It was just in time – the fresh water supplies were perilously low. The oblong lake was nestled in a small valley – and fronted on one side by a large cliff.

    3stuff.jpg

The lake seemed to attract a lot of wildlife, which was good for hunting. Also, there was an abundant supply of fish. They remained camped here 4 days to rest and replenish their supplies.

As they resumed a northeasterly trajectory, many team members were distracted by the plentiful and tasty game. It was a difficult task to bring down large game, so it took a lot of time and energy and concentration to bring home the dinner. So, it took the keen observation of Assistant Cartographer Sam Suplado to bring to everyone’s attention that the land seemed less hilly – flattening out somewhat as they marched on.

    4stuff.jpg

You can see why many cats were distracted – so many yummy animals!

As they traveled, they discovered yet another oblong lake. Something was different about this one though.

    5stuff.jpg

In this lake, the water seemed a bit saltier than average. Chief Hydrologist Richard Cleaner reported salinity levels of 0.6%, more than triple the usual amount found in other lakes and in the World Ocean far to the west.

Anticipation was high as the group set out again on their journey, having refreshed themselves greatly at this campsite.

    6stuff.jpg

The land was definitely getting flatter and less forested around here.

As they headed out, leaving the large lake behind them, anticipation was high. This was truly a strange land. And the constant breezes were blowing new scents which tempted the little cat noses with notions of far away and exotic places and things.

    7stuff.jpg

Despite being far away from home and in a strange land with strange features, everyone was very happy!

On this very fateful day, three scouting parties fanned out: to the southeast, east and northeast. The southeastern party was headed by Baby Monkey, Ty Weaver and Ty Bonsai. The eastern group was lead by Prince Excalibur and the Governor General. The northeastern group was led by Chancellor Mooky, James T. Kirk, Moe, Larry and Curly. Each was destined to make history. The question was, who would make an important discovery first">

I hope you are working on that update cos I am about to have a reactor meltdown.

    final.jpg

Edit:  Well!  I see the placeholder you left was not in vain...  it has been well and truly replaced!  I am happy to report that my modem is still functioning perfectly well and that the transpacific fibre optic cable or however or whatever, the internet uses to get to New Zealand, is working just fine.

Well so that strange wind was an on shore wind...  coming from the sea!

(Had to check with my sailor friend as to the difference between on and off shore wind... I always get mixed up...)

...and all those new and strange scenty smells...

...and the flattening out was the beginning of the coastal plain...

So this of course opens up a whole new raft of explorative options...  but just remember what happened when Max, sailed over the sea for a year and a day...  if they think that they have met wild animals I suspect they aint seen nothing yet....

Thesohappy Thanks! Glad you like it. And, welcome to Schulmania.

ky72x 13 in a row is pretty cool.

Abcvs The Admiral is a Fancy Feast processor, herself.

cleaner475 lol! Thanks. Double that would wear me out with replies!

patriots_1228 Cat food, canned, is best served on a cracker.

Hester Clever, isn't it? With sardine frosting!

MrCinatit Thanks for stopping by Mr C. Always a pleasure having you in Schulmania.

Csgcseri Catnip bon bon? Sounds purr-fect!

sc4portugal Hello! Glad you like your new avatar! You have a great singing voice for the song!

Smarty218 Indeed! Perhaps the Supreme Wirdle will do another dance for us!

Asturianu Christian!!! You are back!! We miss you. We hope you will be back in ST again soon.

gabry85 Thanks! And many purrs to you as well!

Bakercity Thanks! Whew! That would be a lot of updates!

ky72x The medal, by the way, is 1000 grams of 23.5 karat gold. But, worth more than that to you of course! Lol!

Joetropian1 Yes! We are always glad to have you drop in to Schulmania!

John94538 Thanks, John! Schulmania may need to commission its poet laureate to come up with something for the occasion!

Explodingsims lol! Me too. Or I would still be on page 3!

Leech10 It looks like they are on to something.

Abcvs That's too complex for me. I usually just scribble across the page and make a paper airplane of it.

Giligone Thanks for coming by. The secret is now out!

patriots_1228 I think Schulmanium is technically a schulmetalloid.. somewhere between schulmetal and non-schulmetal.

Abcvs Gas? I had beans YESTERDAY. Not today. So no gas for you!

Markus J lol! Thanks. And welcome to Schulmania!

Explodingsims Be sure to update your periodic table!

Leech10 163 protons and 0.163 neutrons. No electrons. But, on certain days, some protons become electrons (but not positrons).

Abcvs Plutonium green... such a warm glowing warming glow!

GreekMan DOH! 7K is only a few hundred away!

dralin321 Since the "world ocean" is fresh water, this has great implications for the future. It will prove a turning point for Schulmania.

John94538 Lol! Me too... not a good day for dial up!

    Hester Oooh! Plot twist ahead??

but seriously, that was pretty cool. It'll be interesting once all of Devonshire is mapped, and they figure out where they actually are...since it's clearly not in the middle of a world ocean anymore.

Hmm. In the exploring, what would change Schulmania better? Whales, or salt? I vote on the salt. It is a new cucinary explorment. Think of it, as a new food industry, to make cucinary better. Now, if only the technology to produce it out of the ocean...

That's easy, they just have to boil the salt water. Now, how long will it be before they discover that?

WOW! Was that Hogwarts? If so... Ahem...

    Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts

    Teach us something please,

Whether we be old and bald

    Or young with scabby knees,

Our heads could do with filling

    With some interesting stuff,

For now they're bare and full of air,

Dead flies and bits of fluff,

    Teach us things worth knowing,

    Bring back what we've forgot,

Just do your best, we'll do the rest,

And learn till our brains all rot

Ahh... nothing like music and magic...
