Amryai200       Thanks for your kind comment. Glad you like the colony. It is bigger than the homeland, but I want the homeland to remain more green and quaint. But it, too, will bow at least some to the inexorable march of progress!

Jacqulina       Thank you for stopping by again. I am delighted that you liked the pix. I am going to raid your CJ for ides for terraforming my next city area. Yours is just so nice. Have great day!

blade2k5        Hm- maybe litter mates! Hoppy was a good guy- been gone 25 years now. Hard to believe it has been that long- and that I am that old! The Supreme Wirdle I had for nearly 16 years. She has been gone for nearly 10. Cats don't terrorize houses- they manage their servants! You know what they say- dogs have owners and cats have staff!

Fredval      Thanks for coming by- glad you like it. And, welcome to Schulmania!

patriots_1228         I love the Simpsons! My favorite episode of all time is where Homer was accused of harassment. That one was just SO funny! I like the Stonecutters one too. I will definitely have more Simpsons references in this CJ as I go forward.

Hawkeye9       Thanks! Glad you like it.

ryalmighty1        Thanks! I am glad you like it and appreciate your consideration for a Trixie. More cool stuff is yet to come!

Cowcorn        Thanks! Glad you like it. So, you are in Sherbrooke? I have been there twice - a nice town. I came on a long weekend and drove from Boston to look around and practice my French. Had a great time!

    Atkinos: Gran Maru's Getting Grander

The bold new planned city developed rapidly thanks to resettlement incentives from the Colonial Government and the promise of a bustling city in a strange new world. The island would soon be packed with 10,000 residents. Our tour today of this, the largest metropolis thus far in Schulmania, focuses on Via Balenarossa, Avenue of the Red Whale.

    whale2at6.jpg

The famous Red Whale of Gran Maru, species Orca balenarossa, namesake of the grand promenade on Gran Maru.

    1stnatlbankpr3.jpg

First National Bank of Schulmania occupies a strategic corner at Balenarossa and Schulmania. It is across from the Civic Palace and from the Bureau of Feline Affairs. Much of the treasure earned in commerce and exploration makes its way here to the vaults. Cats and Schulminons alike bring their treasures here: Schulminions bring simoleons, cats bring whiskers and catnip.

    adminbldgdw9.jpg

The City Administration Building is on the corner of the town square, which centers on the commemorative arch. Occupying the corner with Via Arco, the building houses city offices for every function of government. To the rear is a small plaza with a round shrine. This was a place for government leaders to come pray for guidance as they made decisions and for townsfolk to pray that the leaders would indeed make good decisions.

    archivedy6.jpg

The Municipal Library and Archive had both records relating to all aspects of the town's history and founding as well as a large selection of reading material. Popular checkouts from the library include: Tomatoes & You- The Guide to Harmony With Volatile Vegetables, Meow Meow Purr Meow (#1 best seller for cats), A Very Simmy Christmas, Beatrix Potter and the Chariot of Fire, I'm Well-Rendered- You're Well-Rendered (a pop psychology favorite), The Schulmanici Code, Sim Trek- The Next Generation, The Purpose-Driven Automata, Schulmen are From Mars- Schulwomen are From Venus, Valley of the Props, and the most popular selection at press time, Don't Quit On Me!: A Sim's Guide to Life In A Wintel World.

    cityadminschulmodeonxg9.jpg

Across the street from the City Administration Building, The Schulmodeon anchors another corner of the town square. The Schulmodeon is Schulmania's first single-purpose dedicated arts and entertainment complex. Schulminions came for theatrical performances as well as sporting events, such as the greased pig race and 3 on 3 basketball. A courtyard facing the square was a popular pre- and post-event gathering sport. Vendors sold such delicacies as brussels sprouts on a stick, lima beans, and reduced calorie bread with a squirt of spray butter. Mmm-mmm good!

    civicpalace1gu1.jpg

The showpiece of the town was the enormous Civic Palace, the largest building ever constructed in Schulmania. This building housed offices for professionals and artisans as well as spaces for events and exhibitions. Via Balenarossa terminates at the Palace, which is surrounded by a walkway and plenty of commercial buildings. Nearby business of note include the Catnip Exchange, Fancy Feast Cateteria, Buzzard Bells Music Store, The Monkey Training Academy.

    colonialgovtpublicsafetnl6.jpg

The Colonial Government Building is next to the City Administration building. To its right is the Public Safety Building. The Colonial Governor's office was in this building, as were the offices for agencies coordinating development and exploration. The city and colonial administrations worked in harmony - each was intent on staying on the Supreme Wirdle's good side. Her wrath was something to behold. Besides, everyone wanted what was in the best interest of the island, which was to be the administrative headquarters for the Atkinos Islands Region, which included Gran Maru and Atkinos islands as well as the Schulmania coastline.

    klingmaninstml7.jpg

The Klingman Institute, on Via Emelina (parallel to and south of Via Balenarossa), was Schulmania's first dedicated hospital. It had a staff of 100+ doctors and offered a full complement of services, ranging from tooth extraction to microcellular surgery. The hospital was able to serve the whole population and still devote a good deal of work to research and development of new cures. The staff actually developed the cooties shot, still used today across the world to ward off the perilous childhood ailment.

    maritimeuj3.jpg

Maritime Hall, located at the eastern end of Balenarossa on the corner of Via Barca, was the headquarters for the fleet. Offices and cargo storage vied for space in this fine structure. As Gran Maru had the largest concentration of population, this was a bustling place. The clerks were always busy filing and refilling, barely able to get in a single game of minesweeper or solitaire in every day.

    maufacturersguildlj4.jpg

The Manufacturers' Guild was a small office located on Balenarossa. Its purpose was simply as a meeting place for business leaders to discuss common concerns and develop plans for growth and success. On Friday nights, it doubled as a bingo hall and on Sunday nights a string quartet performed rousing ditties to the wine and cheese curl crowd.

    merchantileexchangeqy7.jpg

The Mercantile Exchange was the main marketplace for the goods which came and left from the port. Located at the eastern end of Balenarossa, the arcaded structure housed hundreds of merchants hawking goods from far and wide, as well as near and narrow.

    mercantilerostrumiu5.jpg

A view from the west of the Mercantile Exchange. Next door is the Rostrum and up the street is the Museum.

    rostrumit0.jpg

The Rostrum, with context, viewed from behind.

    rostrum2oz8.jpg

The Rostrum, in context, as viewed from the roof of Maritime Hall.

    schulmaneumchurcharchur3.jpg

At the town square, one can see the Schulmaneum and the church. The Schulmaneum is the largest school in Schulmania. It features a comprehensive education for all ages. It also provides continuing education for adults. The cat training program was cancelled - the faculty determined that can't don't get trained, they do the training. The church was officially dedicated as the Basilica of Felis Felicitous, the Happy Cat church. They have 4 services daily, and one service done in meows and purrs for the cats.

Now, let's take a look at the town square, the intersection of Via Arco and Balenarossa.

    triumphalarch2ai3.jpg

First, a wide shot of the whole town square. As can be readily seen, the arch is in the center of town, a landmark for all who navigate around the city and a great gathering place for Schulminions to see and be seen!

    triumphalarchtd6.jpg

A closer view of the arch itself, in context.

Next up is a tour of the neighborhoods and green spaces of the island.

That's very, very impressive. I love the old Greek/Roman buildings!

I work for the US Army. I go places, visit mean people, and kill them.

Winston Churchill is generall credited for saying something to the effect of: "People sleep soundly in their beds because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf". That about sums up my life, besides the "rough men" part.

Another great entry. I can see affluence and regality is taking root among Shulmanian sims-- it'll be interesting to see apparent differences in class.

Nifty arch. You make most of these yourself...?

As Gran Maru gets grander, so does this CJ with every update! nice work here my friend. I'm still in awe on how you make the city function without roads... well, nice update, can't wait for more.

    Take Care,

    Charles

oh, btw, I read that purpose driven automata... really changed my life! and the Schumanici code... LOL, you're hilarious!

GMT         Thanks! Glad you like it. That's exactly the look I was going for.

Meinhosen         Thank you. I would love to have a whole city of Greek and Roman. My mother (aka the grandma... or "Gran Maru") requested a Roman city. I asked her if it brought back fond memories.... she groaned...

Emilin       Thanks for dropping by again. And, BTW, notice where the Klingman Institute is. The Schulminions have not forgotten your support in their epic struggle against the tomatoes.

Hawkeye9     Thank you. I look forward to your being a regular in Schulmania. We love guests - and give them complimentary gift baskets of fine chocolates upon arrival - sort of a Hawaii lei kind of thing.

UltraGIR XL       The Schulminions are definitely building upward and outward. I wish I had the skill to make these lots myself, but I have a better eye for designing cities than I do for lots. I appreciate good design but am a bit on the clumsy side for artistic creation. So, all of these are products of the great designers of STEX. [insert shoutout to Mickebear for some awesome Mediterranean lots here!] So far, no one has planted the seed of discord between residents. But, how long can that last...

Charles Rodulfo       Thank you for coming by again. I appreciate your kind comments. It is difficult to make do without roads. In Gran Maru, I do have to put down some streets because I can't get residential without them. But, I will make them as low key as possible.

Jacqulina    Thank you. I appreciate your always thoughtful comments!

RushHourFreak      Thank you. Glad you like what I have thus far and hope you will enjoy future updates.

    Hey Schulmanator,

    I really like this!

It has flavor and style! An almost pedestrian only city, we don't see that often and it's refreshing.

The thing at first that put me aback, was the steep slopes (you know that I'm kind of fond of slope mods), but instead of letting this part bother me I just tried too enjoy it as it is. And I finally come to look at it as if it were something out of this world.

And it made me remembered several cities in STTNG were it was almost only pedestrian too! WINK

Anyhow, I love the ambiance keep it up!

    -John

    P.S. I like the cats!

Sorry I never posted in here before. I know you read my CJ, but yours was kind've intimidating with its 7 pages and everything. Well, it's a slow night here at work now that the Miss Minnesota girls have all gone to bed, and I just read it start to finish. Glorious job, my friend. Glorious. Your Roman stuff inspired the university in one of the cities...coming soon. I can't wait for your civilization to discover the rest of the world.

Atkinos: It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Civic buildings and a good number of commercial structures were built in varying forms of the Temple Style. Residential structures were built out of native materials, for the most part. The thick red clay found on the island was good for bricks and tiles. Thus, most of the housing was constructed using these materials. This ruddy architectural style became known as Island Style, for obvious reasons. Simultaneous development of Atkinos and Gran Maru with unprecedented density led to the rapid acceptance of this new style of building.

Compact neighborhoods were constructed to the north and south of the central Via Balenarossa civic and commercial district. To the north and south of residential areas were walking trails and restful, green parks. A linear northside park converged with a narrow Westside park. The low-lying peninsula at the southernmost part of Gran Maru was partially developed as Southpark. The southern tip was left undeveloped as a nature area.

Let's explore the charming neighborhoods of Gran Maru...

    neighborhood1ge7.jpg

This neighborhood faces Via Imperator and lies adjacent to the aqueducts.

Note: These lots, and the neighborhoods on Atkinos, make ample use of Mickebear's Venetian lots. They rock!

    neighborhood2aq6.jpg

A variety of housing was built in close proximity- above the gazebo features the lavish homes and fountains of Gowron Heights, below are the smaller dwellings of Saturn Estates.

    neighborhood3zp1.jpg

Between the neighborhoods on Via Imperator and the central Balenarossa district was an area left undisturbed. This was a habitat for many plants and animals, including the endangered fluffy-tailed lapwarmer. Kids in the Piazza de Pizza neighborhood, shown above, would often venture into the woods to play with the lapwarmers. Some would inevitably come home as pets.

    neighborhood4ut4.jpg

Old style colored stone roads continued to serve neighborhoods even as the new style paved roads became the new standard. Many residents preferred strolling down the quiet colored stone roads to avoid the heavy wagon and cart traffic which could develop on the main road.

    neighborhood5mi3.jpg

The Klingman Institute, on Via Emelina, is at the center of this Southside neighborhood. The aqueduct runs through this area, bringing fresh water to all.

    neighborhood6hq5.jpg

The northwest neighborhood of Nova Caesarea has great views of the water and a lovely park running by it.

    neighborhood7mm4.jpg

The southwest neighborhood of Hester Plumes sits on a commanding cliff overlooking the water.

    neighborhood8pv6.jpg

Hester Plumes, with great views and great recreational amenities, is the best place to settle down with your pets! Features Schulminion and cat walking trails on all parks!

    neighborhood9ks9.jpg

This northwest neighborhood is densely populated but still has plenty of green space to enjoy.

    neighborhood10do5.jpg

The aqueduct separates two neighborhoods on the south side of town.

    cawalehousemn0.jpg

Captain Cawale's house was built on Via Emilina on the south side of town. It is truly a house worthy of such a significant historical figure.

    cawalehouse2df0.jpg

Captain Cawale's backyard was nicely landscaped. Behind her is Southpark. She liked to go to Southpark often and would occasionally read her mail order catalogs while strolling.

    neighborhoodpark1mz6.jpg

Parks and open space make this northside neighborhood cozy and inviting.

    neighborhoodpark3gz3.jpg

A different angle of Acorn Park, on the north side of the island.

    neighborhoodpark4yc0.jpg

A closer view of Acorn Park.

    neighborhoodpark5to6.jpg

The western end of Acorn Park.

    park6xf9.jpg

Connected to Acorn Park is Grand Prix Park. It features a lovely fountain and a gazebo.

Note: BSC parks are featured throughout the islands.

    park7lt1.jpg

To the west, parks feature kid-friendly play areas. No one is allowed to go up the slide backwards!

    park14ol5.jpg

The green northwest corner of Gran Maru

    park16jn0.jpg

Another view of the northwestern corner of Gran Maru

    park8uh9.jpg

At the very northwestern point of Gran Maru sits the Y-12 Guard Tower. It honors the great work of Project Y-12 in designing the town and offers great views of the open water. Plenty of ships are coming and going!

    park9gi9.jpg

Gentle rolling green hills soothe all who behold them. They may, in the future, inspire golf to be invented. We'll see about that as time goes forward.

    park10pt9.jpg

This little corner park connects with the Southpark trail system. One of the ferries can be seen chugging along offshore.

    park11rr5.jpg

Groundskeeper Willie has his hands full keeping this beautiful area looking great!

    park12au6.jpg

After laundry day, Schulminions would often come to the cliffs to throw rocks and watch them make big splashes. Amazing what one does with no television, huh?

    park13qp0.jpg

Paper airplanes also went great distances from the cliffs.

    park15da3.jpg

The trails from Acorn park wind all the way around the island to the southwestern point.

    southpark1nw7.jpg

Southpark is the largest and most elaborate park ever built.

    southpark2lp4.jpg

Lovely fountains and rose gardens make a great setting for almost any event!

    southpark3wq8.jpg

Santa Claws Cat Christmas Store overlooks Southpark, home to the swankiest and poshest shopping around.

    southpark4ld0.jpg

Springtime is the best time to enjoy the lovely blooms!

    southpark6gd6.jpg

The southern end of the park. Beyond the developed area of Southpark is a natural area. No plans have been made to convert it to recreational or other uses... yet.
