    Atkinos: Size Matters!

Now that the conflict about naming the new lands had been settled, the little armada was able to set sail to explore more. Surely there were more islands out there and maybe even bigger than the little ones found thus far. After loading fresh supplies, the fleet set sail for points unknown. After several hours, they saw yet more land on the horizon. The sailor in the crow's nest called out "Land ho!" He said "And this is the biggest one yet!" Jack Sparrow pulled out his eyepiece and looked for himself. He said "Ye only partially right. Thar be two islands out there, savvy?" The crew knew that this would double their pleasure and thus began chewing on the ship's stores of Doublemint gum.

    rockyshore2uo6.jpg

The ships pulled up to the shore of one of the large islands as the late afternoon sun began to dip low in the sky. Long shadows fell upon the landing party as they approached the shore. Luckily the bears which frolicked around the water's edge were not carnivorous. They were very playful and quite talented, actually. The scientific name for this species is Ursus circus, or circus bear. These animals have been known to ride unicycles through the wilderness and juggle jars of honey to amuse the other wildlife. What great fortune to visit an island with this talented species present!

The crew was excited by the performance and by the magnitude of the find. They had two substantial islands at their disposal. This time, there was no argument about naming them. Here's the exciting new discoveries:

    atkinosuw1.jpg

The island of Atkinos. It is just east of the other island and south of the Schulmaniac Archipelago. It seems to be a great place to farm.

    granmarurn0.jpg

The large island of Gran Maru is visible south of the Schulmaniac Archipelago and is due west of Atkinos.

Of course, who could stop after such a great set of discoveries? Not these Sims! The Schulminions were on the beach one evening, looking out across the water at points unknown, to the south, when one Sim thought he saw yet more land off in the distance.

    mainlandrockyshoratnighus1.jpg

Beach party with the llama. Is there something out there in the distance? Hmmm......

First thing in the morning, a group would set out to see what laid beyond the islands. What they found surprised them in a way no discovery had up to this point. What they found was a continuous shoreline. This was no island. Or, if it was, it was a big one- far bigger than even Schulmanicus.

    mainlandshoreline1jg6.jpg

The shoreline discovered south of Gran Maru (seen at the top of the frame)

    mainlandshoreline2wx9.jpg

The shoreline discovered south of Atkinos (seen at top of frame)

As the landing party rowed to the shore, they were amazed at the variety of flora and fauna they encountered. As dawn broke, they saw a strange new type of tree never seen on Schulmanicus or any recently discovered island.

    mainlanddawnpalmtreeszh6.jpg

The sun was rising on the main land as the landing party disembarked. As the captain led them ashore, the Junior Deputy Assistant Rowmaster, a Mr. Baby "Ooo Ooo" Monkey exclaimed "Look at those weird trees!" All were impressed with the strange new trees and let him name the new tree. He looked at his hand for inspiration and was unable to grasp anything close by. So, he stared at his open hand and then gasped. "I got it" he said "the Palm Tree". Everyone agreed that sounded good. Thus, it was so. These little ones they called palmettos. Millennia later, these were exported to South Carolina, where they became the state tree. So, far away from the shore of Schulmania, Baby Monkey's legacy lives on in the symbols of the state of South Carolina.

    babymonkeyjb5.jpg

Baby "Ooo Ooo" Monkey, the discoverer of the palm tree. Shown with his now famous palm extended outward.

    scflaggifbk3.gif

The South Carolina state flag. Baby Monkey's legacy carries on to this very day, as South Carolina is known as "The Palmetto State".

Exploring further inland, the group found that the animals seemed to like hanging around the palmetto trees.

    mainlandpalmsnanimalsog2.jpg

They also saw some full sized palm trees - quite an impressive sight for the impressionable crew.

    mainlandpalmsdl0.jpg

These exciting discoveries would be the biggest news to hit Schulmanicus since the Great Tomato Scare! The ships were loaded with provisions and set sail back home to the happy island of Schulmanicus and share the great news. Before departing, Captain Splunt said "This would be a great place to plant out flag. Oh, yeah. We don't have a flag." The Supreme Wirdle will need to make a decision about that so a fine new flag can be hoisted over all newly discovered lands.

GMT        Yeah, I suppose brakes would be good on those carts and wagons once they head down the steep hills. I wonder if they have emergency brakes on wagons...

Charles Rodulfo          Thanks for coming by. I wanted to inject a little order into what I am doing, so I thought a periodic assessment would be the thing to do. Eventually, I will have sufficient fodder for a Schulmanian Almanac. I am honored that you think my CJ would be Trixie worthy. That would be cool if it won one!

connor_v         Thanks for coming by. I appreciate your loyal readership. I am glad to have a reader who has followed this CJ from its humble beginning onward.

Gridlock        Thanks! I am glad you like it.

Jacqulina          Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate your kind comments- though my terraforming has nothing on Paradise Falls! Baby Monkey has indeed been captured. Well, adopted may be a better word. He lives in my son's room. He (Junior Schulmanator)has several monkeys, all of whom appear somewhere in the CJ. There's Baby Monkey [palm trees], El Mono [light tower is located on Cape El Mono], Curious George [several appearances thus far], Grandma Monkey (from Grandma, of course), Grape Ape, Dangles, and Weaver [a street]. He has a regular menagerie in his room. And as the biggest monkey in the house, he serves as their leader!

Charles Rodulfo        Now you know the true story of palm trees! Baby Monkey says you are welcome for the palm trees and he hopes you will have plenty to admire. Of course, by doing it on a computer, he becomes one of Simtropolis' famed typing monkeys!

patriots_1228       Ha! Those SC folks love their flag- one of the very few states (other than Texas) where the state symbol appears on everything! Baby Monkey I'm sure is very proud of the Palmetto State!

Zelgadis       You know, you are right. It has been a real pain, too, to build w/o real roads and develop residential. Lots and lots of plopping lots! But, I have to bow to the inevitable and build at least streets if I want some real live Sims!

Emilin     Thanks for coming by. The Schulminions have not forgotten your earlier comment about not wanting anything bad to happen to them. Soon, you will find an update with something named in your honor. Keep an eye out for it.

    Map and Symbol Update

The exciting discoveries to the south have expanded the world view of the Schulminions. Of course, Schulmanicus seems to still be the center of the world, but the world has definitely become a bigger place.

    region002atkinosschulmayd8.jpg

A new map of the world shows Schulmanicus to the north and the new discoveries to the south. The island of Schulmanicus and its territorial waters have been administratively classified as the Schulmanicus District. The Schulmanic Isles, Atkinos, Gran Maru and Schulmania have been classified as the Atkinos District.

    New State Symbols

    Flag

A new national flag was adopted for future plantings on new discoveries. The flag was proposed by Captain Hopinjohn. The Supreme Wirdle gave her assent using the new seal developed for decrees and ordinances (shown below).

    flagdesigntd1.jpg

The flag has been divided into three equal horizontal stripes. From the hoist (left to right) they stripes are gray, black and white. The symbolism has been lost to the ages. As best as the National Archives can tell, colors were representative of the coloration of feline leaders at the time the flag was designed.

    Seals

New seals were designed for administrative districts. Presiding over a growing land leads to all sorts of administrative needs. And, official things need to look official. So, new seals were designed for use on official documents and other items. From this point forward, all government paperwork would carry administrative seals and be completed in triplicate.

    atkinossealze5.gif

The Great Seal of Atkinos. Features a representation of a rampant, guardant Supreme Wirdle.

To authorize decrees, edicts, ordinances, proclamations, and other administrative minutiae, a new seal was developed for use of the Supreme Wirdle. Affixing the seal is reqired to make the document legal.

    regionalmapslv0.jpg

Here's your compendium of updated region maps for Schulmania. As new land is discovered and colonized, new maps will be uploaded. Check back periodically as this Schulmanian Atlas is developed.

    REGION MAP 001: SCHULMANICUS

    prehistoryschulmanicuswideviewml2.jpg

Schulmanicus is the center of the world. No other land has been explored.

REGION MAP 002: SCHULMANICUS, SCHULMANIAC ARCHIPELAGO & ATKINOS ISLES

    region002atkinosschulmayd8.jpg

The first discoveries are made: Schulmaniac archipelago (3 small islands) and the Atkinos Isles (Gran Maru to the west and Atkinos to the east). Mainland Schulmania is to the south.

REGION MAP 003: SCHULMANICUS, ATKINOS, GRAN MARU & SCHULMANIA (DEVELOPED)

    region003atkinosschulma0ph.jpg

New development in the colonies has filled most of both large islands to the south (Gran Maru on the left, Atkinos on the right). The large agricultural development in Schulmania can be seen to the far south. To the southeast is the religious site of Babalonia.

REGION MAP 004: SCHULMANICUS, EAST & CENTRAL

    region004schulmanicustnvr8.jpg

A map of Schulmanicus Island, Schulmanicus District, taken shortly after Coronation Day. This shows details of development on Schulmanicus since the last region map update. Smightower and Wanda are not shown on this map.

Click on the map to see it in greater detail.

REGION MAP 005: LAKE GEORGE ENVIRONS

    region005lakegeorgenamegr4.jpg

A map of the jurisdiction of the Council of Lake George, Devonshire District.

REGION MAP 006: SCHULMANICUS, ATKINOS, DEVONSHIRE
Districts of Schulmanicus, Atkinos, & Devonshire
    region006schatkdevvd1.jpg
Schulmanicus is the top left, Atkinos bottom left, and Devonshire is the right tile. For those who may be a bit…. Shall we say, curious… Terra Incognita is the tile below Devonshire. It is not on the map because it is unknown!

REGION MAP 007: SCHULMANICUS, ATKINOS, DEVONSHIRE- WITH NAMES
Districts of Schulmanicus, Atkinos, & Devonshire
    region007schatkdevnamesfx8.jpg

REGION MAP 008: WHAT MAY LIE BEYOND THE EXPLORED AREAS

Showing the areas to be explored beyond Schulmanicus, Atkinos, and Devonshire

    region008schatkdevgg2.jpg

These areas have not been explored yet, so they don’t appear on the map. But, they have been referenced before. So, when they head in those areas, you will know where they are going. Terra Incognita is shown as well, but of course, no one is heading there… yet. We’ll see what’s going on there soon enough.

    Hey, Bruce-

You're certainly, with the last update, joining thos few CJs out there with great ancillary graphics.  They add so much depth to what's presented in the text and straight "game" pics- it's also a real indicator of thinking outside the box.

You need to hire a cartographer, though.  Region pics will work as a map for a while, but a CJ of this quality will need real maps once development really gets humming.

Great job!  Btw, you don't need to name anything after me- it was my pleasure to help out with your TOC.  Anytime.

    David

seemurray2      Thanks! The Supreme Wirdle is partial to that one, too!

Giligone         Thanks. I like the fact that it is undiscovered and also a mystery. Just what is out there in the blank space? There's only one way to find out!

infinitum19        Thanks for your kind comments. I am trying to have a look and feel for this region. It will eventually modernize, but I want to have layers of development and now go straight to the modern. It is difficult to make a city that will grow and keep it in an earlier looking period, but I am going to give it a try!

pickled_pig    Hey, Aaron, thanks for dropping by. I am honored to have made your sig line. And I am intrigued by your plan for a new CJ. The Supreme Wirdle purrs her greeting to you as well.

connor_v       Thanks. I have a few more seals for future use as well, including the National Parks system and a few others.

salut221          Merci beaucoup and thanks! I am having some serious fun with this.

Dedgren       Thanks for dropping by again. I think having additional graphics does add a certain element of fullness and layer of depth to a CJ. I found quite a few CJs did this during my lurking days and wanted to incorporate this element into mine. You are right, I will need a cartographer. I may need to hit up the Map and Logo Service for some help. I don't have Photoshop, just Paint.net. But paint.net has done pretty well for me thus far! I appreciate your comments. And I will still have something named after you in one of the cities. I have a few of the regulars slated for recognition in future updates. Just Schulmania's way to say thanks for reading!

Charles Rodulfo     Thanks for coming by again. I appreciate your support. The Schulminons have decided to name one of their new roads in your honor. It will be on an update in the near future. Just think, soon they will reach the edge of the map and then they can sail to San Marino!

Jacqulina       Thanks for coming by again. I appreciate your comments. My son is known as "Monkey Boy" and so he loves his monkeys. He pointed out that I forgot 2 of his stuffed Monkeys: Jack and Fumbles. I hope the two will forgive my oversight!

Schulmanicus: Pardon Me, Do You Have A Light?

In the last chapter of our saga, we see the happy-go-lucky Schulminons are basking in the glory of their successfully exploration and its accompanying economic expansion. Baba did not fare too well, but Busscastle's chocolates gained an ever-expanding market share, adding to the prosperity of that area. One area not yet explored is Smightower. In the last frame in the previous chapter, we see a bustling ferry port. Let's see the town that exploration and commerce built. This town, Smightower, is the biggest one yet on Schulmanicus. It's Temple Style public buildings and large homes and shops make it the envy of the island and a template for future colonizers to emulate.

    smightowertowngrewnightav7.jpg

At night, it is easy to see the scope of development around the light tower. The influx of money and materials, as well as skilled workers and explorers, fueled the rapid growth and lavish buildings seen in town. Even at night, before the era of electricity, this town inspired the awe of Schulminions island-wide.

    smightowersimiancentralqu2.jpg

Simian Central Church sits on the hill overlooking the town. The Schulminons have always been very loyal churchgoers. There are many shrines, churches and temples dedicated to various Sim Saints around the island.

One feature further developed in Smightower is the concept of a civic plaza. Wirt had Wirtyplace, in which the town centered upon a civic building. City planners took a different approach to this town, creating a gathering place as the center of the town, centering on a statue of mythical hero Schulmanicus Rex (the Romulus of Schulmania, for you history buffs). Let's explore this pleasant plaza.

    smightowerplazawideviewsy1.jpg

The town square, as seen from the west. Schulmanicus Rex is in the center of the square, ready to inspire all who encounter his glorious presence. At the top left is Simtropolitan Academy. To the lower left is the residence of Mayor Smokey Nine. To the lower right is the town well, located in front of exclusive ChocoMall, home to dozens of sweets vendors. To the top right are the largest residential buildings ever built on the island. Hundreds of Schulmions live right on the town square. This kind of population density was hitherto unheard of.

    smightowerplazadayni6.jpg

The plaza, viewed from the east. The statue of Schulmanicus Rex gazes down upon his people. Many come to gather in his presence, as is foretold in the legend about him, which states "To know him is to love him. Thos who know him, love him. Those who don't know him, love him from afar".

    smightowerplazaday2vc1.jpg

From the north, one can see the lovely gazebo built near the square for the enjoyment of the Smightaroos (residents of Smightower). As always, the statue of Schulmanicus Rex is standing by, ready to lend a hand...

    smightowerplazadusknx4.jpg

From the south, sunset casts a reddish gold glow upon the benevolent and serene Schulmanicus Rex. Truly, his modesty knows no bounds.

    smightowerplazadusk2sn3.jpg

The gazebo is seen bathed in the dappled light of sunset.

    smightoweracademyry3.jpg

Simtropolitan Academy, located on the plaza, served as the focus of learning for the town. Everyone was eager to learn about the big new world. Schulminons learned to read and write. Cats came in to read newspapers. Dogs were in the lounge playing poker.

    smightowerwestside2nf1.jpg

The west side of town had many of the same types of houses seen elsewhere across the island.

    smightowerwesternaveduskgb3.jpg

Western Avenue at dusk. An interesting mix of tile and thatch roofs and brick and dirt roads. This is an era of transition.

    smightowerwestsidenightvv3.jpg

At night, Western Avenue is seen anchoring that end of town. A short walk away is the town square. The church and shrine can be seen at the top of the frame.

    smightowershrineofstsimanthajb2.jpg

The Shrine of St. Simantha, one of the patron saints of the town, sits on the hill overlooking Smightower. The rectory is seen to the left. It was built with lots of windows so the parish cats could look out of the windows to their hearts' content.

Let's see where the Smightaroos live.

    smightowerhousesqr6.jpg

    A quiet residential street.

Houses at the end of the street.

East Drive & Purr Street. At night, the only traffic through the intersection is pets coming home for dinner.

Quiet Weaver Lane begins at this crowded intersection with East Drive.

The intersection of Weaver Lane & East Drive, from a different angle.

The higher density buildings are a novelty to the Schulminons and inspire many a myth about their grandeur.

Next, we will visit the civic buildings and other parts of exciting metropolitan Smightower!

You are on fire these days, Schulmanator!

Now this I wonder about: "To know him is to love him. Thos who know him, love him. Those who don't know him, love him from afar".

I'm not sure what is really implicated here, but it seems a little inappriopriate, hehe. 4.gif

patriots_1228     Thanks for your comment. I appreciate your nomination as well. That's very kind of you and I appreciate your support. The Schulminions are poised for ever greater discoveries and developments. Come back and see where they go next!

connor_v        Thanks for stopping by. I think what you may see in some of the close up pix is the same you see in aging movie starts... some things don't like close ups. I have noticed some buildings do well under maximum zoom but others get jaggy. I usually zoom back out a bit when that happens. If there's some pix in particular, lemme know which and I will see if that's it or maybe something else.

Emilin       Yep, Schulmanicus Rex is the love machine!!!

Thank You for the Continued Support!

Simtropolis depends on donations to fund site maintenance costs.

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.
