@ Skyfire: No. I did not re-BAT the entire thing. I basically made it a little higher, made it a lot wider. Added/fixed some geometry.

@ Simfox: Yeh, the frames them selves are a deep blue/green. I may have to play around with some materials so that you can see them. Check out this amazing photo of the Harbourside here, tell me what you think you would do. link <<<<<!!!!

Also here is some more pictures, to give you an idea of what is going on with the windows.

I've wanted to see that roof on the hardourside done properly for a long time! Fantastic re-creation, I can't wait to get it in my CJ

I guess I'm gonna be more active on this thread now too. Keep up the great work bixel, you seem to have some great stuff comming up!

Yep it is a lot of deep green!! Personally I like it a lot. But also I must say these colors look very odd next to the Arch. And all the residential of the complex look odd next to commercial buildings rising on the western side of development.
But anyway… What could be done… Good question wouldn’t be easy… because the color scheme of the building is of very high contrast. Things like this are always difficult to represent electronically as none of the today’s devices we use to show the result have dynamic range to do it justice. But I would say some custom adjustment of Final gather and energy of secondary bounces on the level of the particular materials (Arch and design) would be the way I would try to go.
About glass, well it is a typical green variety used in HK, quite heavily tinted. But one should remember about glass that it doesn’t have defuse color and that no shadow could be cast on it (for the same reason). Color of glass we see is in fact the color of object illuminated by the light tinted by going through glass. It may sound boring but understanding and replicating these physical properties is crucial to make glass appear like a glass. So when you see glass you see mixture of two things first it’s reflections on its surface these are color neutral - as with all dielectric color of the glass doesn’t affect the reflections! And second – the refractions through the glass - these will be tinted by the color of the glass (and in ideal situation shifted a bit, but at SC4 scale of things this effect could be safely neglected. To cut this long theoretical story short – you should simply use Thin Glass Arch&Design material from MR selection. Reduce opacity to say 85 and increase reflection on 90oto something between 0.15 and 0.25. That should give you quite good match. Remember that in this case your glass you should be made of single plains with no depth.  Curved nature of the building should provide enough reflections (external to the model) to keep it interesting.

One thing to ponder over is should it be all crisp and saturated or use some degree of faked arial perspective wash-out..???

One thing that I still want to point out is that size of the base!!! It is great deal bigger then on your model!!
In reality it is about 11-12 residential floors high! in your model it is about 5-6! Give the building proper base and it’ll look much better!

    oh... max7..

well then you don't have those materials as they are part of the MAX9 package and are proprietory materials for Mental Ray 3.5 that shipped with MAX9. They are really great and very easy to setup, but you can simulte those with regular raytraced materials too. I'm too tired now, just came from countryside chasing cows through the field... I

Cooking up something in the Sim City 4 Devotion Forums. The only reason I am working on a project over there is because its the homebase for the CAM mod, all my other major releases will still be shown here and released on the STEX.

I like the now model alot, bixel! I am worried, however, as SimFox said, the colors are too vivid, and just would stand out too much. Also, I'm not sure I like the orientation on the lot. I have a "thing" about inert lot space and would much rather see this parallel/perpendicular to the road. Of course, this is a very minute problem and overall the new reincarnation looks spectactular!

Do you mean looking straight at them? I think I can do that, but I'll need to find a good image of the characters.

I suppose he means the upper one of the two pics on the left of this page:

Emporis probably prevents him from linking to them, no idea.

I am almost done with Harbourside V2. Right now just having issues with the window textures. I can't seem to get anything that is appealing for me, I also noticed in a lot of the RL photos only about 30% have their blinds completely down or halfway. So I am thinking of making a window/glass/blinds texture set...but well see.

Bixel... while that would look real world I believe that always ruins a buildings appearance. But thats just my opinion.

Nathan, just make a glass material and give it something to reflect, Plus I think that blinds are terrific idea! They are such a typical part of HK scenery. So much so That I even wonder that if HK residents as many natively southern people hate sun so much why do they even bother making such huge panoramic windows?? In Spain for instance you see many residential building with windows like those in castles under sedge - good enough to shoot the invading Moorish hordes, I suppose but for little more then that. People in places like that go out of their ways to get away from the sun!

The process of making those - blinds, that is, could be scripted to make it faster - just creation of polygons withing certain area with random hight aligned to he top and evenly spaced...

"why do they even bother making such huge panoramic windows??" Hence my point =) I find it to be strange! Of course, it happens here in our downtown condo area.... huge windows covered by blinds... a shame!

Maybe it's the view they recieve. Who wants to wake up to another residential skyscraper blocking their view of beautiful natural scenery? It might not be common in Hong Kong, but I think that for Hong Kong's reason, they don't want people looking into their units and thinking of breaking in, or it could be that many people like to sleep in during the day, etc...
