I think that the offand on ramps are dangerous... they suddenly go out onto the highway... it should be a lane for cars that goes on and off like thirs picture...to the left on the picture

I see what you mean. Those developers might have not paid attention to the detail of the system. Perhaps they might want sims to throw more tantrums per day.

That's a good idea. I might consider for some areas of my interchange project since some of the areas in which the road merges are not started, so it might not be too late to consider it. Click on 'My BATs and Modds' on my signature for my latest update of what I am doing.

nah, they're not dangerous. they're quite common here in houston, esepecially in places were space is restricted on the freeway.

i really hate the ramps on sc4... they are way too small and they have a hugely steep angle that is impossible in real life...

If i could learn to BAT, i might give it a go and try and make some more smooth ones...

I have to agree with Prince here. I'm also for around the Houston area and am constantly in the area, the Highway are built like this to save space, the game is very much realistic on that note. Only Highways out in the open areas have lanes that merge in/out of the on/off ramps.

It would be nice to have the option but I wouldn't want it to be permanent.

Another note. Its kind of hard to compare the drivers in Iran/Iraq to the drivers of other countries.

I'd say yes!! Although it is certainly true that ramp /highway design does impact on safty, so does carelessness and rampant disregard for rules..

Personally I like the SC4 designs just fine.. not because the are "realistic" but because they WORK and it is a GAME. I certainly hope you don't use anything else in the game that is "not realistic" 4.gif

I too would appreciate the ability to slap down and nice expansive "real" design, but frankly 99% of the time, I just trying to get decent function in my game. This is similar to the interminable arguement about why the monorail can look like a roller-coaster, yet be the "fastest transport" People would lose their lunch if they rode one like that for real.. And the argument about the railway slopes and switches.. etc etc

It is a game after all .. I have a good imagination and have no problem "pretending" or "visualizing" that my highways look just like real life.. 4.gif

Just a quick question, maybe a tad off-topic from where this thread was going, but I've seen many examples from folks that have avenues that merge onto interstates. I can't seem to get mine to work that way. The most effective solution I've found is to make the avenue go over or under the interstate and on either side of the avenue have road overpass onramps and make a sort of box that intersects the avenue so that I don't end up funneling avenues into a road in order to use the onramps. It's a pain and not terribly realistic.

Is there a way to do this in-game without any plugins?

K

well they don't seem to be that dangerous, i have more traffic accidents near school zones than i do on the interstate system, maybe developers and modders should try and find a way to slow the automata of vehicles near schools?...is it possible?

Build your highway, ending it near the end of your avenue, then drag the avenue onto the end. This is built into the game if you have rush hour, I think. On the other hand, you might need the Network Addon Mod (NAM). Try it ans see.

Very strange. I tried messing around with it on a blank region tile and couldn't get it to work.

I then started building an elevated interstate in an actual city and dragged my avenue under it and it asked if I wanted onramps. Unfortunately after that I couldn't reproduce the same situation.

I don't recall if the interstate was in the process of being built or was already built. I saw reference in another post for something completely different that some things can only be obtained if you cross two transportation types while they haven't finished being built.

Sound plausible?

K

Here's the foolproof way. There might be an easier way, but this way is garunteed.

If you want onramps where the avenue is going under the elevated highway, it can be hard to do, but it is possible without the NAM. First, build your elevated highway. Then drag a strip of avenue under the highway with at least three tiles on either side. Those tiles can not intersect anything, or it won't work. It will ask if you want onramps. Say yes.

For the end of the highway, where the highway will turn into an avenue, build your highway, and drag an avenue so that a 1x2 tile section of the avenue is on the same 1x2 tile section as the highway.

A couple of quick comments

1) I've noticed that the in-game Avenue/Highway ramps... and even the NAM ones... visually appear to have median blockages, i.e. you can't make a left turn from the end of the ramp onto the avenue. Is this the case in the actual pathing? And if so, what are some other workarounds (in addition to the box intersection) that people have come up with?

2) Not sure if I'm reading you correctly, Kernale, but it sounds like you want to build an Avenue *junction* (i.e., T-intersection) with a highway... rather than lead it straight in so that the avenue becomes the highway. Is this a correct interpretation? If so... what I've always done is just plopped the appropriate highway T-junction onto the highway, then dragged the avenue right into the dead-end stub *of the newly placed T*. You may need to lengthen the T by a single tile of Highway... can't remember at the moment.

Good idea. The main highway where I live constantly changes from 3 to 4 lanes because of the frequency of exits and onramps. I'd also like to see some kind of modular onramp/offramp set, so we can make those spagetti interchanges, 5 level stacks, 2 highways coming from the same direction merging into one, etc.

Yes, I support these too, somthing the game really needs. Where I am from, ramps are biult in a Parclo standard and MUST be at least 300 meters long. Actually, they are called accexeleration and deceleration lanes because the ramps give you enough time to get your speed up and merge safely with traffic when entering, and gives vechicles ample time to slow down when exiting. This design really helps lager vechicles too and prevente dangerous weaving in and out of traffic.

About having them this long in game, there is space at the sides of the current highway for another lane. So as mentioned earlier, they will take up 8-11 tiles, but it could be compressed to fit with the normal highway. I know that the rural highway (RHW) has an emergency lane at the side and can give this up for acceleration/decleration lanes with ease. See that topic for more info.

I would like to see this as a topic in the Modding: Transit Networks Fourm just because it is such a great idea!

I hope I have provided the best of both worlds. I put a reference to this thread in the Transportaton Modding list.
