I've been trying to experiment with putting a modified automata model in the game.  I have modified an ANA A320 originally made by Katsuta from Japan.  This is the result:

First of all, one of the engines is missing--agh a small problem, fortunately I know how I can fix that (in GMAX each of the pieces have names like T1, T2--I named mine T03 lol--maybe the numbers on that correspond to the group numbers in the materials tab), but...

The wireframe shows the model as extremely distorted from how I originally modified the aircraft (particularly the fuselage).  The textures seem to be like that every time you import a 3DS--that can once again, be fixed later.  And also, the model is--

Waaay too small--too small to even be seen in the picture!  Do you have to scale the plane in GMAX after you import the .3DS file (whenever you import a .3DS the mesh is always very small so that could be the problem)

Also--is it possible to change the Model Resource Key's TGI values in the exemplar file so you could get a different model appearing in place of the current automata models?

Emm, I have made 'texture' for buses, but I suddenly found that there no suitable automata to replace , because the shape of these automata does not fit this 'texture'. (As the front shape is streamline.)

Hello there. I have been working on this mod I am trying to make. I have messed around with Reader and fishman but now seem to be stuck. I have exported a .3ds file from sketchup and I have textured it as well. I have all the images and textures I used for making this model, but I am unsure on what to do after I import the .3ds file into Reader. Must I use LithUnwrap to texture it again or is there an easier way?

It's been a  while since I have played around with automata.

pilotdaryl: Some programs turn some of the faces inside out. The faces is only seen from the outside, from the other side they are transparent. Can't see if this is what have happen or there is faces missing.

About the scale problem. Be aware of how the scale is set up in the programs you are using.

KilluaZaoldyeck: I would recommend you to take the skin from an existing model and do your texture on. Just remember: the front goes where the front is and so on.

Windyshrimp: In the reader, click on the 3ds-model in the left side picture. Then on the right side you see some tabs at the tabs. Click on the vert tab.

The x, y, z being the coordinat. The x is in the width direction, the z is in the lenght direction and the y is in the height direction. A little different that the normal convention.

In the end you see an u and a v. These are the textures coordinats. If they are different than zero then there is a good change that you are on your way.

I'm guessing its gone?... thats a shame, I want to start making Automata pretty badly...

I'm taking a look- there's certainly no intention to restrict access to the tutorial, or for that matter generally anywhere else at SC4D.  Each team has a private forum board, and so does the staff, but that's about it.

EDIT (10/7/07 at about 9:30 p.m. GMT):  It's fixed.  The trouble was on our end.  One of those myriad little check boxes had gone unticked, and I'm looking elsewhere to see if that's happened in other instances, as well.  If anyone ever runs into this in the future, let me know.  -DE

Well, I posted this in SC4 Devotion, but I'm going to post it here, too.

I read through this thread, and while there is someone who had the same problem as me, in a sense, I have not idea how to edit a IID.  So, here's what's going on.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong to get the texture to appear like that.  I have gotten the textures into .FSH files, and everything.  I can get them to show up in the little display box(above the main prop window).  Can someone help me out?  Thanks!

Same problem here like crewsgw, I'd like to import vehicles form 3ds format to SimCity...these instructions here only help if I want to re-skin some old model...

Someone please answer! I have also industrial BATs that need automata modding -- where is tutorial? No mining can be done as long as the loaders sit idle!

Also I would like to create new animated Sims -- is this possible?

To all who want to make automata from gmax models, here's what I just learnt: follow this tutorial, and you'll certainly get your models into the Reader: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=41&threadid=64877&enterthread=y&STARTPAGE=2

Now though is where I need help: I opened a custom bus in the Reader to replace both the model and the texture. I didn't manage to change the vertex values (too many of them, and their order is very confusing) so I imported my own model directly and successfully. I replaced the texture in the fsh file and now I can see the new texture both in the 3ds model display and the window above... only it doesn't fit my model, as it comes out twice or thrice in one face, upside down, scaled down, basically a mess.

How on earth do I set the U and V values in the vertex tab?

Plus, when I import my model, the original custom bus automatically disappears, including its shadow. When I add new vertex groups in the vertex tab, to build a new shadow, nothing shows up in the display!

Please help, I'm almost doing it! 4.gif

Ever since I downloaded  the radical ordinances v2.0, one of the advisers keeps popping up, and it says: Om:Toggle all ordinance. Can I prevent this? Is is meant to happen?

I don't have a problem making automata, but i was wondering if anybody could make a pack of every airplane reskin mod that adds all the planes into the game and not replace anything.I do want three of the airplane reskins to replace the 707 and 767.

Example:Srainy's a-380 replaces the 707, the KLM royal dutch airlines replaces the 767, and the Air France 737 replaces the sabreliner bizjet and the rest just adds to the game.

               I hope I explained this well.

Hey everyone, I am seperated from my windows xp desktop, stuck here with my vista laptop for the next year and  obviously i can't get FiSHMan to work. I want to do some reskinning. is there a way to convert fsh to png without the FiSHMan program?

I tried to make some sci-fi flying automatas for simcity. A lot of days ago I saw in a tutorial about automata and iLives reader, and I discovered the use of the 3ds button when I open an automata dat. So I created a protoype of flying car on the BAT, and then I transformed the .gmax in .3ds. When I put it in the reader, the 3ds was correct, but the texture of the original car was still there. It's too difficult to make a texture for a complex structure (not only a box like the original). How can I delete the original texture and replace it with the gmax colours?

(I can't upload the photos because they are .bmp)

Is there a place that I can request people make some automata for me please? I dont have the equipment to make the thing I want, neither do I have the skills, nor have I seen anyone else make a second skin for the car ferry, if anyone can do this for me, pm me and I will send them pcitures of the ferry I wish to skin, be warned it will probably be quite difficult, I assume.
