OK, I just wasted another 2 hours rendering an empty ocean. This time, I know I followed your instructions to the letter.

I think there must be something wrong with the map, since I just checked and it is totally black. Now, I know that with a greyscale image, that mountains are light grey and rivers/oceans are dark black. But, the long beach JPEG, is totally black.

So, what now?

    Black!?

That is a problem. Let me look in to it.

EDIT: I just downloaded it and it wasn't black for me... my suggestion would be to try to download the map again... maybe it corrupted while downloading last time.

Make SURE it's not totally black, and if it's not, go ahead and render it again. 29.gif

Hey guys! First off, I'd like to say Mallow, I love your maps! Keep up the great work!

Anyway, the point of my post. I live in Ottawa and I've been dying to do an Ottawa re-creation in SimCity for the longest time. So when I realized Mallow had a huge map up, I couldnt resist trying it out. So I downloaded the map (along with the import.dat file) and got started. I placed the config file and the jpeg in a folder in my Regions directory and I placed the import.dat file in my My Documents/SimCity4/Plugins directory. When I boot up the game, load the region, press CTRL-ALT-SHIFT R and select the jpeg, NOTHING HAPPENS!!! 15.gif I've tried multiple times, placing the dat file in different Plugin folders, removing all my other plugins, etc etc but nothing is working for me.

I was just wondering if any of you have had a similar problem and if any of you knew what I could do to make it work. Thank you for you help in advance!

    Hi! Thanks for the comments!

To answer your question, yes I have had that problem before and it can be extremely frustrating.

I still haven't figured out why, but for some strange reason, SC4 thinks some images aren't quite greyscale jpg files... I don't really understand it either.

The solution? Well, the only way I've ever found to solve it is to edit the map. All you have to do is open it up in an image-viewer, like IrfanView... then increase the color depth, then decrease it back to a greyscale jpg. Then save it as a greyscale jpg. There is an option, for example, in IrfanView, that while saving the file you can check a box to 'save as greyscale jpg'. Make sure that's checked in this case! 2.gif

Another thing you could try is to use the 'Load, Resize, and Convert Terrain' feature in the Landscape Designer (found on the STEX)... though this can lead to a small loss in quality.

I attached a jpg of Ottawa to this post, so try that one out. If it doesn't work, then try my above suggestions. And, good luck!

Mallow, I also get black and full water regions when I download and render your regions. Is there any plugin that I might need to see the maps. Thanks for the information...44.gif

Hmm, do you have the import.dat plugin in your plugin folder when you render? There is a link to the plugin in the descriptions of most of my maps.

And, when you say black, do you mean all black, or just very dark?

Not at all! I saw that he was having a problem, and I thought I may be able to help him. So... I tried! Actually, I feel a bit bad for interrupting there... 31.gif

But, oh well, as long as xePh3roK got help, right? And, thanks for the comments on the maps! 29.gif

No reason to feel bad, I'm sure he appreciated the quick response, and I certainly didn't mind a bit 44.gif

    Hey Mallow,

Love your maps, I see that you have already graced us with a great Saskatchewan city, and I was wondering if you could give us a map of Regina *(my Hometown)*

    Thanx in advance
    -Marshall

I think I could do that. The only problem is, I'm not at home right now. When I get home, I'll look in to it. 19.gif
