Emergent Fungus I think there are never enough squads , look this : 38.418 thousand simtropolis members and around 30 squad members thats all , and the 'map squad ' idea isn't too bad. With a map squad we can post request exactly like the bad request thread .

Example : Alkaola : I would like to see France accurate scaled in the Map Exchange

Huskerman: Allright Alk there will be a accurate scaled France in the exchange this afternoom

I just like the idea though

If you don't like it don't use it.  People complain about the number of useless threads around here as it is.  Can you imagine if everyone started a thread demanding asking for a certain building.  We'd have hundreds of threads.

As far as a Map Squad goes, this has been tried before.  I had a request thread, but no one seemed interested in it so I quit.  If you get enough interest in this I don't see a reason as to why there can't be a Map Squad.

YAY!!!! great idea we need that, the MEX is not as good as it can be so this would help a lot...
Aronion: you may want to change your signature pic the word Admin is not very visible....

Masher:  The picture is a work in progress.  I have been playing around with it for a few days and will work on it later tonight.  It looked better before I uploaded it.

I think that would be really cool to have a Map Squad. I would support it 100% since there aren't many maps in the exchange currantly that are sutible to make great cities on. I would diffintly start rolling off more maps if there was demand for them.

As the first task for such a squad i would ask them to help figure out the greyscale import factors. I know there is the thread started in modding open discussion and myself a few others were trying to better understand everything.

I have a request! The Thunder Bay Ontario Area! There are a few people that have uploaded a lot of maps, I'm sure they'd enjoy being in a map squad.

A map squad would be pretty kewl. But with the new findings, I agree with Joerg on finding and testing more on that new find. Also the MEX would have to be upgraded to allow for the possible factor mod that could be created. The one thing though it is alittle hard to create accurate maps when you involve lakes. For example, Lake Cour 'd alene near spokane is actually higher than the city of Spokane. So the expectations would have to be kept as real until we have the ability to add actual lakes and have it stay there.

Hey all,

I have taken the liberty of asking Aronion to head the Mapp Squad. Hope this causes no problems. However I am looking for more members to help with the maps. So please tell me if you would like to join.

Don't expect your title s to change over night.  I won't do it till I see how dedicated you guys are to this project before I take the time to give out custom titles.  After awhile we'll see who deserves to be the team leader and so on.

Good luck and I'll be here to assist in any way I can.

Does this mean someone could make my current member label permanent?4.gif

Ok, on topic, I like the idea. I was thinking, instead of a squad, maybe a team or just plain mappers... Whatever you guys like, I don't care... I'm just throwing some ideas out there.

*Note to self: I need to find time to play Simcity. I need to balence my time playing BF1942 mods and Simcity, not just playing 1942 mods.

Aronion, I like your signature and your avatar.29.gif

Aronion, I would like to propose a change to the MEX that will allow the use of conversion height dats along with a picture preview of the region, not the greyscale map. Is that possible? Here is another idea, for the maps themselves when they become rendered, use png's instead of jpgs. The quality is sooo much better using png's than jpgs. Atleast from my experience from the maps I have done.

I agree the Mex needs to be updated.

“The American city should be a collection of communities where every member has a right to belong. It should be a place where every man feels safe on his streets and in the house of his friends. It should be a place where each individual's dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the respect and affection of his neighbors. It should be a place where each of us can find the satisfaction and warmth which comes from being a member of the community of man. This is what man sought at the dawn of civilization. It is what we seek today.”

I know what he meant because he's been complaining about that thread for weeks.  Instead of offering a better option all he figures it's easier to complain.  I read his comment and reached the final straw concerning his comments.

Skippy: Any changes made to the MEX are Dirk's area not mine since he ahs to code all the changes.  When I see him next I'll point this out to him so he is aware.

    Aronion,
I did some looking and testing this morning. Actually there wouldnt have to be much of a change to the MEX. Here is what I would like to see. One, allow the use of PNG files. They are alot more accurate and do not get screwed up compressed wise like jpg's. Also, besides having the greyscale image, why not have a second image for actual regoin view. I hope Dirk would be up for that. I figured out with some testing this morning there would only have to be one dat file for the elevation when importing. The scale factor can remain the same the the sea level set the the same. This way we do not have a million dats running around for the elevation heights of different maps.

Sounds good skippy as for PNGs i was about to post and say there they would be way to large in file size but after messing around in photoshop and testing files sizes i noticed that the file size isnt really that much larger with a 2048x2048 map in jpg form being abour 300k at decent quality and with png it was about 500k so really there isnt to much of a problem with accepting png files i suppose aslong as people save them as greyscales otherwise maps might be around 1-2 megs in size.

As for the scale import factor mod well i would love to help out in testing that. I messed with it alot early on when it was first pointed out. And i think that it is possible that we can simply create a new standard scale factor and sealevel rather than trying to create a custom one for every region especially sense the dat file has to be loaded with each particular city otherwise sealevel changes also speaking of that if you needed to make lakes that stay there then you can make a seperate that for only a few city tiles and just remember that when you want to use the city tiles with the lake on it then you have to have that dat file in the plugins folder but when messing with any other city in the region you need to take it out.

Also adding a forum for the map squad might be a good idea but im not sure on how much use it might get. I know that discussion on the terrain importation factors might increase its useage alittle, but im still alittle sceptical as to its useage.

Lastly i think that this should probably be treated like the other 3 squads on simprop in that there is no definative team leader and the name is simply the mapp squad, but on the other hand who is the say everything has to be so uniform.
