About This File

Interlocking towers are seen at many rail junctions across the US.Their main function is to control the assortment of turnouts (switches,in railroad terms) at the junction. Because they are seen in so manylocations across the country, they tend to evoke the feeling and styleof the area. One in New Jersey might be small, blocky andinstitutional, one in upstate New York might be an elaborate Victorian, and one in the Midwest might be Prairie style. Sadly, these uniquetestaments to the power of rail are being decommissioned slowly andtorn down, to be replaced by national facilities. Inside a tower is amachine called an interlocking press, an assembly of levers thatcontrol the switches. The operator receives messages from thedispatcher, who then manipulates the switches to allow trains to passthrough correctly.

This look like the interlocking tower from Trainz Railroad simulator:-) Nice. Two thumbs up.

I've always used an edited ranger station on a 1x1 base. This isn't bad though, although it's a bit annoying how it has to straddle the track...What if the junction is between two diagonal rail lines?

Hmm...not sure, but is the scale right in this currently? Looking at the lot, it looks like scalewise, the windows are 10 feet wide and 13 or so feet tall (comparing to the ramp on the farly and the train) Neat idea though :)

karybdis makes a good point- but this is great nonetheless. I put it in and I really can't tell the difference unless I try. Have you considered a coal tower or water tower?

I designed it to be in scale with the trains and other automata, not the Maxis BATs. If I designed it at the Maxis scale, it would look horrible out in the middle of nowhere (where I use the towers, for the most part). Diagonal one coming soon. Above, I explained why I made them straddle.

Nice. Even with computers, some of these should have survived, as historical landmarks.

No, it lets the traffic through. I know cause, in the 1st picture, that was an actual uncontrolled train going through.

In plopped it, and, though trains appeared to pass through, according to the traffic query thing, nothing was going through. Freight traffic was going along the rail fine before i ploped it, but afterwards none was, it was all going out by highway......

.... I bulldozed teh highway connection to force freight to go by rail, still nothing. Bulldoze lot and back to normal again. Don't get me wrong, i love the lot and still use it, but i can't use it on routes that frieght traffic actualy goes through, because it seems to block it.

It's nice to see interest in these things. For the record I work at a interlocking tower in Toronto, It's a more complex interlocking then most, going from 6 Tracks on 3 Subdivisions into 14 Station tracks but the princiable is the same. Really enjoy this
