Chantrey Inletsupports a wide range of land animals and fish. In fact, the regionsupports all five species of Pacific salmon, including the world'slargest-- king salmon. During the winter, it also shelters the secondhighest concentration of American bald eagles in the world. The inletis full of geese in the spring before they begin their migration.
Thisrelatively mild climate, its flat to gently rolling landscape, and itsextensive coastline have made it a popular place for humans to visitand live. Carved out by glaciers, the inlet is covered by windblownsoil from nearby floodplains and with volcanic ash from the mountainsto the west.
Forests are dominated byblack spruce, white spruce, Sitka spruce, quaking aspen, balsam poplar,black cottonwood, and paper birch.
