While most deserts are very hot during the day and cool at night, BigBear Lake is not.. It is warm and temperate year round, but too dry tosupport species from the surrounding tropical rainforests (download pegasus plains mod). Big Bear Lake is *so* isolated from other areas that its rich sandy loam has gone unused for centuries.
In the lake one can find an abundance of fresh water shrimp, herrings,electric eels, string rays, pirarucu ('bony tongued' fish,) and huge catfish. The virgin black sand beaches (download mod)are caused by the chemical reaction between the moisture from overnightdew and minerals in the soil, creating a sheen known as 'desertvarnish' and also hints at the presence of ancient volcanic eruptionsthat scattered the region with obsidian eons ago. Large deposits ofpurple quartz can also be found deep within the lake.
The unique water (download mod)is rich in minerals and is thought by the natives to have rejuvinatingaffects on the skin (scientists have also identified a high iodinecontent). The lake itself is formed from vast groundwater reserves,trapped in layers of porous rock called aquifers.
Scouts have recently speculated that the climate and soil conditionsare perfect for the growth of tropical oak and eucalyptis. However,none of these species can be found for thousands of miles. They must beartifically introduced. Big Bear Lake, having two growing seasons(hot+wet/cool+dry) is also suitable as arable farm land.
