Adamskii Land Chapter 2 is coming...

And El Niño hasn't even arrived yet. The three western provinces of Canada (B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan) are experiencing crop failures of major proportions. This article points out that El Niño, expected soon, hasn't even arrived. This means up to three seasons of warmer weather. Things may be bad in California for truck crops, but up here we are major producers of staples such as wheat. Expect serious price increases at the grocery store.

Water control measures to come into effect. It is a start. AFAIK no animals nor people have died of thirst, but plenty of plants have. Farmers are ripping up crops and orchards because they can no longer supply water. The aquifers are drying up. The long term solution is very large scale desalination plants along the coast. If they won't use nuclear power for these, I cannot imagine where they would find the power to run them. Using a reverse osmosis process can produce some very valuable by-products, but such a thing requires some serious political will and support by the constituents. Too many straws in the soda. What would you do if you turned on the tap for a drink of water and all you got was air? People in California may be facing this. All the bottled water in the world won't solve this problem. Besides, bottled water costs more than gasoline.

"And people say, I know not why, that we shall have a warm July." Sir William Shenk Gilbert in Pirates of Penzance Act I. Some of this is attributed in the article to global warming. The question here is have we passed the tipping point, or is this just a local phenomenon for this year? If we get a second year like this, will there be a world wide shortage of corn and soya? The SW Ontario apple crop was ruined this year by an early thaw which caused the trees to bud followed by a hard freeze which destroyed most of them. We are now experiencing a very dry period for the farms in my area.
