A few questions from a semi-$%&^!
uvapwns replied to sissonnes's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Even though I use the highways, I haven't seen any noticable benefits (but then again, I haven't made any large regions yet), but they work better for more rural areas anyway. You definitely don't need to have them, It's really just whether or not you want to deal with the costs and harmful effects on certain types of demand. -

I like to use subways inside of large cities due to the fact that they have high capacities, don't clog up your roads at all, and don't take up space in your city. However, they tend to be very expensive to both build and maintain. Chances are, though, that you'll need to build them anyway. You'll probably also want to add a highway or two for intercity or across city travel. However, I think that for what you need, subways are definittely the better choice, as long as you can afford them. -
Skyscraper and High-Rise Buildings Tips
uvapwns replied to Fatherted's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Wow... I wasn't aware of the highway thing. I have 4 going through my city. Darn it. -
Yeah, I thought so.

If it isn't the jobs, it could just be what sims consider "long". Without NAM, they only like to walk a couple tiles. That probably isn't the problem though.
-
Ah, well. It's still pretty small.

Whale Watching Tour mission not offered
uvapwns replied to defacto123's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I had a city of 300,000, with almost all middle and high wealth residents, 4 passenger ferries, (being used over 50% capacity), and at least 25% of the city was water. Still nothing... -
Actually, the memory I added made it 2 GB. I know, I have a bad computer.
-
If you try adding more RAM to your computer, it gets rid of that problem. I was having it and added a gigabyte of RAM, and it runs much smoother now.

Whale Watching Tour mission not offered
uvapwns replied to defacto123's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I can't get that mission either. Maybe it's a glitch? -
I know that it raises buillding stages, but do buildings automatically grow to those bigger stages, or do you have to download larger buildings?
-
I've downloaded lots of Dusktrooper's buildings and I obliterated the city. Thanks for the help.
-
I was halfway right...
-
Yeah, I read the manual; it just said to go ahead at your own risk, basically. I had to search the manual on google. The readme had links, but they wouldn't work.

I just installed it and started playing in my city again, and commercial demand was maxed out at all wealth levels. What happened, and can I fix it?
-
All he has is bus, subway, and passenger train service. It could be true in this case. Unless, of course, the city does contain highways.
-
Thanks. I've been working on downloads for twenty minutes now.

I was playing one of my cities and noticed all props and flora had disappeared from any new buildings, even things like the advanced research center. What Happened? All the old buildings still have props, but anything that has developed since I started playing has none. I have some pictures of it if it will help. City Zoo Advanced Research Center Some Random Buildings Notice there are no construction workers... I also noticed my major league stadium becoming dilapidated, which it shouldn't, right?...
-
Oh well. Thanks for all the help.

One thing that works for me is putting combination bus/subway stops on every other block or even more, then make the subway layout a grid. I'm at 200,000 residents on a medium tile and all my subways and elevated rail lines are at 10% capacity, as well as having no road congestion and mostly short commute times. Try RTMT, (road top mass transit), it has those combination stops and much higher capacities, and it's on the STEX. You could also try the ninja boulevard station. Also, do you have any highway(s) or avenues? Your sims may be relying totally on the subway, since it's the fastest form if transit. That's only likely if you have NAM, though; if you don't, sims tend not to use mass transit and be stupid about transportation in general.

It has road access on 3 sides and a strip of commercial zoning on the other. This has happened before with the minor league stadium, which was surrounded by roads and zones. But, if you zoomed in or out, it would go back to normal. Maybe just a glitch? Sorry for the double post. Somehow I managed to hit reply twice before it actually did.

Yeah, I never lower that. If I zoom in or out, it will flash between normal and that state, and eventually decide on one or another.

False alarm. I downloaded BAT and SimCity updates yesterday, and they reset city detail to low. I changed it, restarted the game, and they were all back. Thanks for the quick responses, anyway. Do you know anything about the dilapidated baseball park?
-
Uh-oh... I just downloaded some new plugins... Is it reversable?
