Wow, I love the Midland Hotel...and the substations. Some small substations have been something missing for ages. Some open ones would be good as well, ie just transformers and switchgear with no building (all painted in customary battleship grey). gshmails: The Midland Hotel is a real Art Deco hotel in Morcambe, England. It's been derelict for years but I think it's being restored to it's original condition now. I love this style of building.

Nice, it looks quite Brutalist...the pebbledashed concrete and abstract mural on the short facade. My only suggestion would be to make your windows more consistent on the front facade...they're all different sizes at the moment and there doesn't seem to be a pattern. You just need to adjust the vertical mullions so that the windows are all the same width or there is a pattern with the width.

Looking good. Re. interior detailing, don't go too overboard, remember that anything too small will not be visible anyway. For an office building, create a desk with two cuboids on it for a computer with a monitor on top, maybe add a few rectangles and rotate them to unusual angles so it looks like bits of paper on the desk. It might be worth doing filing cabinets, chairs etc as well but there's not really much point in detailing them beyond very basic shapes. To add the interior lighting, use Omni lights, it is essential to tick the Shadows box and adjust the Attentuation (this controls how far the light travels). Then place as many of these lights as you need, play around with the different settings. A warning though, using this type of lighting really increases render time but it does look a lot more realistic than the nightlighting texture.

Hmmn yes, very interesting. Actually, for fire safety reasons, a lot of Brutalist buildings that LOOK like they have a concrete exoskeleton actually don't, the structural frame is internal and the 'exoskeleton' was added for effect. Some very interesting photos there folks. Gingerblokey: Yes, I was on holiday in Great Yarmouth recently and I experienced the delights of the Market Gates centre! I didn't see that library though but it's lovely, it's almost in original condition with the fantastic 50s/60s font (does anyone know where I can get hold of a font like that? Rockwell Extra Bold Italic is the closest I have found and that's what I use when batting (indeed this font features heavily in my Television Centre which is in the same 1950s style as GY library). Market Gates has a Brutalist design except I guess it was built in the late 70s when raw concrete was going out of fashion so they used bricks instead...but certainly the narrow windows and the design of the rather dingy bus station beneath is Brutalist. Also, the Atlantis Tower uses to be Brutalist until the Postmodernists came along and made it look like some ancient temple. The swimming pool is interesting as well, there are quite a few swimming pools with this kind of design. Vlakhaas: Yes, the Bates Polytechnic is very good and Brutalist, the vegetation on the balcony reminds me a bit of building like The Barbican. P2H5: I've never noticed that barracks building before but it is a bit out of place there! I love that swimming pool complex though, where abouts in London is it? It's Brutalist idealism and I love the wooden spiral staircases in the lobby, they are so typical of these buildings. It is quite rare to see an original 1960s interior in these places as often they've been refurbished. 1960s stuff has so much charachter.

Very nice Church DT! Everyone here seems to be on holiday or going away soon, it's going to be kind of quiet. However there are a lot of projects in our system as well as those still at the BAT stage by various members of the team so The Summer Of NDEX is going to be a good one! Things to look forward to in the near and more distant future include DT's multistorey car park, Eric's and Superstar's towers, FosterK's RSO oil port, the highway/underground transition, my UK High Street shops and of course the NDEX Television Centre...plus a lot more stuff I haven't mentioned so stay tuned to NDEX folks!

I must say I really don't like that Selfridges in Birmingham, it looks very fake and plastic. It is an example of the worst excesses of Postmoderism

The SC3K BAT was a lot simpler than GMAX...but also a lot more limited, far more realistic and detailed buildings can be designed in GMAX than in SC3KBAT and indeed with GMAX, the only limit really is details can become so small that they can't be seen in the render. Yes, GMAX has a very steep learning curve and it takes a lot longer to BAT a building in GMAX thanb it did in SC3K but I much prefer GMAX as it's more fulfilling.

Sorry to hear you're leaving EQ but I'm sure you've made the right decision, RL is definitely more important than SC4 which is, after all, just a game but a very absorbing one at that. You'll be missed but hopefully Ardie can step into your shoes. Congratulations on meeting the girl of your dreams and thanks for all you've put into NDEX. Sorry to hear you're leaving as well Frogface, your British BATs have contributed a lot to the game. Will you still be continuing your excellent CJ?
