it's times like these when I wish the BAT rendered at a higher quality, but geeze, even at what the BAT does, you must have a rendering farm to actualy render it! so many polys!

ALOT (Arans Lil Ol Things - Comments & Support)
kefka replied to Aran's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
ah, public art I think they are good. I think the lots could have more props on them though. Maybe a little gardeny thing with some benches next to the signs would be good. Putting the sculptures into a prop family was a good idea. I'm surprised nobody has commented in this thread yet. -
cool! They are modern but still very believeable. Make sure that you do a good job texturing, since the textures could make or break your good modeling. If you need help with the textures feel free to pm me, but I'll be out of town the 16th-23rd, so if you pm me then, you'll have to wait for me to come back.

nope, but I'm surprised it's taken this long since simtropolis has been open to make it. -
Adopt ANTI TERRORISM signiture for a week
kefka replied to toxicpiano's topic in Simtropolis Related
I see so many minivans with all sorts of different ribbons all over them, but I know that almost all of those people haven't actualy supported what their ribbon says. They've supported the upcomming ribbon industry by buying the ribbon, but they haven't donated their time or money to whatever cause their ribbons support. I think this thread is good, but make sure you activly support anti-terrorism. contribute your time or money to some kind of effort, and report stray luggage even if it makes you feel stupid. provide personal moral support to people if they want it, and that sort of stuff. I think terrorism won't last too long like this. The number of actual terrorists is small, and the vast majority (even the people who might agree with the terrorists cause) of people disagree with terrorism. And the more terrorist attacks, the more anti-terrorism support and security there is. -

I think the thing I like most about these new towers is seeing the new architecture, and how the each cultures traditional art and symbols, and religous stuff, and climate and all of that other stuff influencing the design, making something new. I guess that's only true if the architects are from that place though. good work on the tower! maybe when it's done you can e-mail the owner of the real building. The owner would probably be happy to hear about it. You'd have to find someone who speaks the language.

Ah, I had the wrong scale tool selected. This will be very useful, thanks! to keep the thread ontopic, here's an update on the free press building:
-
[:0]!! I don't think gmax has the option to only scale in one direction. I tried but it didn't work. I wish I had 3dsmax... I could even render something in different angles! the website looks realy good!
-
looks good, the colors match realy well. I think it looks a little squashed though. Depending on how you made it you could add a meter or half a meter to every floor (or maybe even adding floors), and then scale the entire thing to fit on a 4x4. I think that would make it look slimmer. MaxisMike told us that they ussualy increase the buildings height by 1/3, so it should realy be 238 meters tall instead of 189. I think it'll be realy popular on the stex.

LOL, structural problems, gee I wonder why cool buildings. that pedestrian bridge blends in much better with its surroundings than other pedestrian bridges I've seen. I looked at the urban michigan site, but shouldn't something be done with the bsp site first, assuming urban michigan is yours? I'm looking fowards to seeing it anyways.

they use the same model, but different LODs. go into the 'parameters' division in the BAT (I think it's right above the preview division, and below the render, but I'm not sure). Click refit LODs (or whatever it says). That will also delete the old ones which is ok (unless you made custom ones). Then hide the new LOD boxes, and re-render. If you made custom LODs, since the problem is only at those certian zoom levels, maybe you forgot to clone them, or mis named them. If your problem is what I think it is, this should solve it.

an update. The top is actualy supposed to be smaller than the bottom, not bigger (right now it looks like it's wearing a crown). It's a good thing I post progress becuase that's when I catch things. This part of the building would fit snugly on a 1x4 lot. page 53

maxis could have put power lines ontop of the roads. I think it would be similair to the utility power lines already in the game. It would be possible to switch the buses with trollys, but there wouldn't be any tracks, wires, and it would move around like a bus. but this idea has been discussed before in a big thread, and it hasn't been made yet, so I don't think it's possible, as much as I'd love to have them in my cities.

Growing interest in an "Architectural discussion" forum on ST...
kefka replied to DuskTrooper's topic in Simtropolis Related
If you asked me, I would agree and put the sim mars as a sub category under custom content, but then I would replace the sim mars project link on the navigation with city journals. The two sim mars forums could be merged together. Simmars has it's own forums at it's site which most of the members use instead of the simtropolis ones. I think the architecture forum would be very popular at first, but then it would die down alot (as with all new forums like this). But even after it died down I think it would still be active. If the architecture forum is very sucsessfull, then it will draw new users just for that. Even if they are not fans of sim city, their intrests would probably be similair to ours, and would be a good addition to simtropolis. -

I agree! And I see no reason why it wouldn't be made, it just takes a few clicks by dirk to make a new forum. 200th post!!! -
I don't see any reason not to include the 1x2 ploppables with the rest of the stuff. The files are labeled clearly enough so that if someone didn't want them they could delete them. Or should it be released seperatly on the stex? I don't know why the columns have that weird shading. I took a cylinder with a few verticle divisions, converted it into a mesh, then scaled the top and moved it down. Does that make any sense? I should probably remake them using just normal cylinders. the new Mary arms/hotel has been scaled 110% from the last one, but I'll have to scale it down a little bit becuase it's .6 meter(s?) too wide on one side . I think the blurryness (it looks blurry at zoom 4) is becuase of the colors, not becuase of the size. ardecila, that's realy cool, can you post a picture of it? after a very loooong time, the building is close to being released. It was actualy ready to be released a week or two ago, but it was growing too much . So after some tweaking, a re-render, new lots and stuff, it should be ready to go. Also, I've been working on Albert Kahns Detroit Free Press building, you can see some progress on it in the Barry Sanders Project thread.
-
To put it simply, there are problems with the old building growing too much, and this addition should fix those problems. I realy like the addition. I also plan on improving the ground floor by making the windows transparent and adding some chairs and stuff inside, probably reusing stuff from monkey dragon coffee and books.

oh, that's a cool site, I didn't know about it! If you're ever taking pictures down there I just need ones from the back of the building. I think the front of the building is 4 tiles. It's supposed to be 58 meters tall, and it looks like it's a little more wide than tall. If that's true, than the tower part is one tile thick. Anyways, I'll start working on it. edit: I started and did alot of the front part, but it doesn't look very good. I'm restarting it using a different meathod. It's probably going to be more like 65 meters tall and 5 or 6 tiles wide. edit again: http://img70.echo.cx/img70/9282/simdfp1av.jpg align=baseline> I accidently added an extra floor to the high part, but I'll fix it later.
