  1. airport problem

This file was the problem, by the way. If you can't upgrade your airports, check your plugin folders for news_filter.dat.
  2. airport problem

I think the problem is a file I downloaded called news_filter.dat. Not sure where I got it, but if you have that file, it might be blocking the upgrade message. It's otherwise a very handy file, stopping those annoying "no water, no way" and "growing city cries for more juice" alerts, so I'm going to try taking it out only when I need to upgrade an airport.
  3. airport problem

I've been having the same problem for a while now. Airports will not upgrade from "small" and in my region I have several international airports that are over capacity and won't expand. I somehow set the game to only pop up important advisor alerts, so it doesn't show the "growing city cries for more juice" type ones all the time anymore. I don't know if that is preventing the expansion message from popping up, but I can't remember what I changed and cannot find anything about it on google.
  4. Kinzie Tower

Nice look, but as soon as I installed it, it took over my city. Needs to appear later in the game.
  5. The Cobb Royale

This is a beautiful building, but I finally decided to demolish them all from my region and remove the plugins. It seems to be one of those highrises that grows too soon, so it towers over lower density areas. Maybe it's just its unique shape, but a lot of the time it really stands out and seems out of place. Perhaps modding it to a later growth stage would help, but I don't know anything about that. Just my two cents. :)
  6. Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas

At long last, this is my second map uploaded to the STEX, a region I have been wanting to play for a long time but haven't found anywhere. This is an often-ignored but quite scenic and historic area of Washington, the eastern Olympic and western Kitsap Peninsulas. As a Portland resident with family on both peninsulas, it is an area I have frequented, and there are few better drives than Highway 101 up the Olympic. I like small maps with one large city to create a non-sprawling metropolitan region with a single urban center. I did take the liberty of making the southwest Kitsap Peninsula as the main city, as there no urbanized areas on the peninsula and the Kitsap is large and generally flat. I tried to grid out the rest as true to life as possible. The historic towns of Port Angeles, Sequim, and Port Townsend (originally meant to be the shipping center of Washington) are highlighted. Hood Canal is the large fjord that cuts through the two peninsulas. In the far southwest, the Skokomish River and Watershed lead to Lake Cushman. The Dungeness River flows to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, separating the United States from Canada, in the north. A large city was gridded in the heart of the Olympic Mountains, making for the perfect opportunity to recreate Olympic National Forest using some of the great mountain, park, and trail mods around the STEX. It's up to you whether you make this the industrial and commercial giant the founders of the area envisioned, or keep it as the secluded and peaceful natural area that it is today. Thanks for looking and hello to my fellow Northwesterners! Is it Spring yet??
  7. Walldoff Apartments

Nice building but it grows too soon. It's all over my city of 20,000 (there are at least five scattered throughout) that tower over every other building. These need to appear later in the game.
  8. NDEX Ballard Park One by DT

Another classic mid-rise office building. Down with skyscrapers (figuratively)!
  9. Constant crashing on new laptop

I wasn't able to install Catalyst as my system forces me to download drivers from the HP website (grumble). I downloaded and installed the latest driver, got about 20 minutes in and felt pretty good about it, but then it crashed again. This time it crashed when I was trying lay subway lines, and I noticed that as I scrolled in underground mode, one of the subway tubes was showing up as yellow lines as it came on screen, then the CD-ROM drive started spinning and the game crashed. Does this sound at all familiar? As for reinstalling my plugins folder... *sigh* I have a lot of them that I've collected over the years and I really don't look forward to starting over from scratch, especially given the state of the STEX right now. I'll go ahead and backup my plugins folder and try a clean install and just see if it works with the default plugins, but this subway thing really makes me think it's a graphics issue. EDIT: On further review, software rendering was checked by default. I switched it over so maybe that will fix things.

First comment! These old office buildings are my favorite. This will be a beautiful addition to my growing cities. Excellent work!
  11. I just bought a new laptop and Sim City 4 is near unplayable. I cannot enter a city without it crashing shortly thereafter. Sometimes it happens in 30 seconds, sometimes it takes 5 or 10 minutes, but it crashes every time without fail. It seems to be completely random as it doesn't happen when I do anything in particular. When I bought the laptop, I transferred my old plugins folder from my desktop so the problem is not a plugin conflict. The laptop came with an ATI Mobility Radeon x600. I can play other games (like Civ IV) without a problem. I've done some searching and it seems like there is some sort of Radeon issue, though since I had a GeForce in my desktop, I've never had to deal with this before. I couldn't find any definitive answers, though, so sorry if this is an old issue. Computer is an HP-Compaq nx9600 running Windows XP Pro v5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 with 3.2 ghz P4 HT, 1GB RAM, 2GB virtual memory and the aforementioned x600 with 128 MB RAM and driver version 6.14.10.6483. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Inland Empire California

I greatly appreciate all the positive feedback. I'm getting ready to release my second map, which I hope will be much better than this one.

Is there anywhere to download the higher mountain mod while the modds section is down? I can't find it anywhere. :-/

This is my first upload to the STEX so please be gentle. I've downloaded a lot from the STEX so it's time to start giving back. I've spent a lot of time trying to get this mapping thing right and I finally feel like I can create something that is worthy of being uploaded. If all goes well, this will be the first of many maps (and maybe even some BATs). I grew up all over this region, which lies to the east of Los Angeles and Orange County. I tried to include the major lakes, though I'm afraid I'm not skilled enough to draw in the Santa Ana River. If you want this to be accurate, you'll need to manually carve it in. I even included Big Bear and Arrowhead Lakes, though as they're mountain lakes, they're in some pretty deep holes. I've included a custom config.bmp which you may or may not like. I don't like to play with a lot of large and medium cities; I don't like a lot of sprawl (which surely comes from growing up in Southern California) so I try to contain growth to specific areas. I also find that I don't build up the small cities until I've developed much of the larger ones, and I find the resulting empty spaces and subsequent development between towns and cities to be a lot more realistic. As a rule of thumb, if a city's population is over 100,000 in reality, I'll make it a large city; 25-50,000 will be a medium city and less than that will give a small city. Given the limitations of the map, I couldn't grid things out perfectly, but it should be generally representative of the area. The large cities are meant to be Riverside, Corona, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, Fontana, Moreno Valley and Perris (I made the latter a large city because of its geographical size and because I wanted it to encompass as much of Lake Perris as possible). I'd also like to make note of the medium city on the left edge of the map sandwiched between several large cities. That's the city of Norco, where I spent 10 loooonnnng years of my youth. I'm the first to admit this isn't a particularly interesting region, but I'm pretty much going to stick to places I've lived or been with some regularity. My future maps will be moreso, but I wanted to get this one out there, get some feedback to improve future maps, and maybe give someone else from the area a chance to play on their hometown. If I get enough response (and some tips for improvement), I'll release an updated version (maybe with a river). Otherwise, I'm going to try my hand at some other, more interesting places. Enjoy!
  15. Less Abandonment

This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Every time I see a beautiful highrise go up, then get a no job icon above it, then dilapidate, all in the course of a few months, I can only wonder why they ever built the stupid thing in the first place.
