  1. It seems to me that, in the upcoming election, health care will quite possibly be the deciding factor for many people when considering who to vote for. Having looked for a thread around ST, I have not been able to find one dedicated to this issue. Allow this forum to be a discussion and hypothetical think tank for ideas concerning health care. To begin, I would like to provide you some links concerning the (likely primary) candidate's health care plans. Barrack Obama's Plan: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/ Hillary Clinton's Plan (click "Download the Plan" to view): http://www.hillaryclinton.com/feature/healthcareplan/ John Edwards: http://www.johnedwards.com/issues/health-care/ John McCain: http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/19ba2f1c-c03f-4ac2-8cd5-5cf2edb527cf.htm Mitt Romney: http://www.mittromney.com/Issues/healthcare Mike Huckabee: http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Issues.View&Issue_id=8
  2. Hey guys, I just wanted to share with you a simple little mod I made for CSL. It's called "Demolition Cost" and reverses the refunding system to charge the player for demolishing things instead of refunding. I thought this might be fun and add a little bit of realism to the game. Enjoy! Steam Workshop Link: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=407091116 The cost to demolish is equal to one half of the construction cost.
  3. Demolition Costs Mod

Please also keep in mind that the game's refund system is only effective for things that you've **recently** built. Things that you've demolished ages ago are not refunded and therefore my mod will not subtract money for this. I am currently digging into the source code for the bulldoze tool to see if I can remedy this problem.
  4. Show us your Downtown/CBD

@Evil Weasel: Great shot! I'm in the same boat! I haven't posted here in years, and CSL has brought me back @OmniBLACK: Yes, these are in-game shots!
  5. Show us your Downtown/CBD

Great shots, everybody! So far, here's what I have. City is almost 100k population with a lot of low density sprawl, just how I like it
  6. This is stuff that we talked about in SimCity 4 days as though it were hoverboards and faster-than-light travel.
  7. Entry 8: Were on the road to somewhere!

This is an amazing CJ, James!  I'm glad I took the time to read it!
  8. Hey guys! Just thought I'd pop in here with an idea. I've noticed a lot of people here who like electronica and it's subgenres but have trouble finding the music. I have the same problem too as I live in Ohio. Use this thread as a discussion for all things electronica. Share songs you like, artist info, etc. A couple rules will apply here, however: 1.) NO YOUTUBE VIDEOS. The only exception are those that come directly from the artist or record label. As tempting as it is, the songs uploaded by other users are done so in violation of Youtube's and ST's rules and won't be tolerated here. Also, no linking to other illegal sources of music. I'm sure the mods will watch this thread closely and be editing posts as necessary to avoid this problem [thanks guys ] 2.) No obscene content. Some electronica can have some... Erm... "Suggestive themes" and I'd like to leave those out of here as well, considering that this is a PG-13 site. This also goes along with ST's rules regarding obscenity. 3.) Absolutely no discussion of where to torrent/warez the material is acceptable. Again, straight from the Dirktator's mouth. Only provide people with links to LEGAL download sites (Amazon, iTunes, etc). Now, as to what "Electronica" is... Electronica, as I use it, is a term to encompass all forms and subgenres of electronic music. That being: Techno Trance Drum 'n' Bass Liquid Drum and Bass Dubstep Hardstyle Jumpstyle >.< Dance Electro House House Remixes of popular songs Happy Hardcore Many others... This list is not intended to limit the scope of the topic, but just to give you guys an idea of what to expect here. If you find some other genre that you wish to discuss, you are not only allowed, but ENCOURAGED to share! Enjoy guys! I guess I'll start with the first question: What's your song of the week? Me: Neelix - Disco Decay (Felguk Remix)
  9. economy tanking for no reason at all. Anyone else?

Go back to where you laid the highway on the edge of the map. The connection and sign may still be there even though you eliminated the highway. This has happened to me a couple times. Found it, and eliminated the problem.
  10. Calling all helpers

I applied, I really want to throw in some stuff for the CXL section. Good luck guys!
  11. Are these hardware good enough?

Take this into consideration, however. Most casual PC gamers buy hardware only when necessary, and they usually buy the cheapest stuff they can find. Now, all of us here know that the best brands actually deliver that rated power (or close to it), but most don't. Thermaltake, Cooler Master, Corsair, all good brands (among others, and let's please not debate the best ones), but this person is likely going to visit newegg or his local hardware store and buy the cheapest 500-600W PSU he can find (if he follows my recommendations). I recommended 500-600W based on this presumption and also to act as a small buffer for "future proofing" (ie - he goes nuts and gets a second 8800). It's ALWAYS better to overpower than underpower or ride the edge. I'm running a core i7 920 and a GTX 295 under 1000W Thermaltake even though I could get away with 800-850 because I may one day decide to put in another GTX 295. Sure, the PSU costed about 25% more but that's much less than the cost of a 1000W PSU down the road on top of the one I just bought that barely powered everything (I use the term barely lightly).
  12. economy tanking for no reason at all. Anyone else?

Highway connection is definitely your problem. Those are locked for a reason. Good spot Androv!
  13. CXL - Anti Piracy Features

The only thing that concerns me is the practice of using DRM or other anti-piracy measures that could potentially inhibit a legitimate consumer from using the game. Ie - SecuROM, Tages, Limiting License renewals, etc. There are ways of doing this, such as MC has done. Online registration is the way to go. It allows the user to install the game's core on as many systems as necessary, as many times as necessary, and as long as they have that username and password, they're gravy. I personally am in full support of MC's rights management. It's perfect. That said, for those that are arguing that DRM does nothing to protect the producers. It does. Think of how rampant the problem is now compared to how bad it would be if DRM did not exist. Sure, DRM doesn't do MUCH to keep people from stealing it, but the amount of people that give up because of the complicated process of doing it is likely larger than most would like to think. I work in tech, and I get a lot of calls from computer illiterate folk who's first option is to give up on the first try even at something very simple. THOSE are the people that DRM targets. You're not going to prevent techie people from bypassing it, but the process of preventing the average user from doing it is so easy it's unbelievable. And that is half of the piracy "market" off the map in one shot.
  14. Wal-Mart doesn't carry Cities XL?

Get it from Steam. Great stuff.
  15. CXL - Anti Piracy Features

There have been issues in other games that have SecuROM where people will legitimately purchase a game and have SecuROM triggers go off anyways. The problem with this is that the game itself is messed with. It doesn't shut down with a nice little error screen, it doesn't stop the game from loading, it uses the game against itself. In GTA IV, for example, if SecuROM triggers, it will cause the camera to go nuts and cars that the player is driving will control themselves and catch fire spontaneously. There is no error, there is no indication whatsoever that the game is doing what it's supposed to. This leaves the player playing a guessing game as to what happened, and in the event that the person legally purchased the game, they wouldn't have the slightest clue that SecuROM had triggered. They'd just assume the game is bugged, or even worse, their computer is broken (and pay $100 to have it "fixed"). My point: Just be glad that MC didn't go to this extent. Also, don't buy anything with SecuROM. I won't support it.
  16. The Simtropolis Electronica Club

If I remember correctly, that was in Gone in 60 Seconds, no?

I work for the IT department there and almost every time they do an update to the server (we do not have a test server because they're morons) it slows down or crashes afterwards. It's likely that MC's IT messed up the updates they pushed and are having problems with it. MC probably doesn't have test servers because they're a very small company and can't afford one. No excuse for my STATE university though
  18. My custom content

This thread is looking promising. If it progresses at this rate MC will be uploading stuff from here in no time.
  19. Problems logging in?

Ah ok, they did maintenance around this time last week. My apologies.
  20. Game plays itself when offline?

No, there have been some problems with city stats being updated to the server on occasion. So, your city will show 0 pop, etc, until you get a successful save to the server to correct it. It may take several tries. What happened is, while you logged out, some of your contracts expired and you lost income. In this respect, yes, the game does go on after you logout, but the city doesn't continue as a unit, just the trade system. If they stopped all trade with you when you logged out, it would be pointless to make the game an MMO [there will be no discussion from me on this topic, different thread, different complaint, you don't like me calling it an MMO, PM me]
  21. Problems logging in?

It's Wednesday, kids. Site is going down soon for maintenance. You won't be able to login until 6:00pm EST, not sure what that is in GMT.
  22. I found an Easter Egg!!!

Haha this was totally cool! St servers shut down at their regularly scheduled time so I thought I'd hop on CXL for a bit. Much to my amazement, I'm flying around downtown and I see a guy running off the end of a crane on one of my buildings and taking the plunge! I followed him to the ground and he opened a 'chute and exclaimed "What a rush!" and went back to the top and did it again! Ha! Love it! You should be able to just barely make him out at the tiip of the crane hanging over the top of the building.
  23. mouse problems

    Graphics drivers. update them.

For example, I've got a surplus of oil that I need to get rid of because one of my high profile contracts fell through while I was away from the game. No problem, I won't lose a dime while I'm away because all I have to do is sign in on the website and re-submit the contract for hire. It's a nice way to keep things in check so you don't come back to any surprises. VERY VERY good design feature on MC's part. I really enjoy this.
