About this City Journal

Brownsville, East New York – R$ Manufacturing City (NAM36)

cover photo taken from Walking NYC : Brownsville, Brooklyn Housing Projects youtube video at 8:55 minutes

This city journal is a combination of SimCity 4 tutorial for manufacturing cities with rail, with mention of hidden SC4 and NAM tips and tricks, and the story as this city unfolds, from the very beginning.  I am a longtime vanilla SimCity 4 Rush Hour user, and this is my fifth city tile using the NAM.  I love region maps of real-life locations, lots of water, and ferries, and tunnels, large (happy) sim populations, tightly packed urban neighbourhoods, using sophisticated traffic management, wealth development, and zoning techniques, from playing the vanilla game for many happy years.

Gosh the NAM is exciting, even though the sheer number of features is tad bit intimidating at times!

Here's the Google Satellite link for Brownsville, New York. which I am interpreting as a high density and medium density residential/manufacturing city, mostly low wealth R$, with lots of manufacturing (I-M) scattered throughout for R$ jobs.

With a love for seaside landscapes, this is kinda different for me.  I'll dip into developing my Brownsville large city tile just a little bit at a time.  This city tile still does have a few ferries, along the inland canal portion of Hendrix Creek, and inland section of the Fresh Creek Nature Reserve, on the eastern side.

Here's some of my initial strategic decisions for this city tile:

  1. Army Base to lift manufacturing caps, to sustain jobs for an enormous R$ low wealth population.
  2. Cheap dirty power – large scale manufacturing needs lots of power.
  3. Rail connections for freight ... no Sea Port.  My first city tile using Real Railways and various NAM railway features!
  4. Real Highway (RHW-4) interchanges.
  5. 5 highway neighbour connections, including to the mainland shoreline of my beloved Canarsie Pol island city tile on the east.
  6. Advanced and sophisticated traffic tunnels (as always).
  7. Many, many neighbourhoods with R$ tenements and trees, much like the cover photo of Brownsville above.
  8. Large sprawling R$ and R$$ neighbourhoods of little row houses.
  9. Three C$$ commercial ferry loop districts, with the likelihood of developing tourist traffic (off the eternal commuter bug) as my region develops.
  10. International Airport to promote C$$ commercial growth clustered near my ferries, and lining my highways.
  11. A smattering of agriculture (I-A).
  12. Just one cute R$$$ high wealth residential zone, Starett City on the eastern side.

I downloaded the SimCity 4 region map for New York from this link, and used SC4Mapper to break it up into large city tiles, with small city tiles on the borders between the large city tiles, for finer grained regional traffic management and for the economic boost each Neighbour Connection brings:
https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27550-new-york-city-united-states/

This city tile is going to be mostly manufacturing, with high density low wealth R$ neighbourhoods with huge tenements, and lots of green spaces reserved between the largest buildings, much like the real life Brownsville.

Canarsie Pol, East New York: Island City – Bedroom Community
This kind of island bedroom community can be done using vanilla SimCity 4, too, as long as your region has lots of water and ferries.  Having said that, a tourism based economy works much better with the NAM ...

Fun with SAM (NAM36)

Fun with SAM (NAM36) My recent conversations on farming with @CorinaMarie and @Cyclone Boom, on the Farm Stuff thread, have made me much more interested (temporarily), in cosmetic aspects of SimCity 4, and so I decided it was time to have some fun with SAM. No, I didn't misspell, SAM, not SPAM. If you're new to the Street Addon Mod, or you think you might be able to get more out of it, then this post is for you. The Street Addon Mod (SAM), is one part of the NAM which is entirely cosmetic, so I put it...

Brownsville, New York: Google Satellite virtual tour of a low wealth SimCityscape Aside from being a Google Satellite tour, this post is also a little tutorial on demand caps, pollution, NIMBY and YIMBY, describing SimCity 4 game mechanics for stable R$ residential neighbourhoods, pockets of highly profitable C$$ development lining high volume highways, and wealth creation in manufacturing (I-M) cities, using just the vanilla SimCity 4 plops. Of course, you can get around demand CAPS issues by developing a...

Brownsville Loves Landfill ... Seriously! This post is another little tutorial on NIMBY and YIMBY, describing SimCity 4 game mechanics for stable R$ residential neighbourhoods, pockets of highly profitable C$$ development lining high volume highways, and wealth creation in manufacturing (I-M) cities. stench · stɛntʃ · noun 1. an offensive smell or odor; stink. 2. a foul quality. 3. a distinctive odor that is offensively unpleasant. fetor, foetor, reek, whiff, niff, pong, malodour, mephitis, noisomeness....
