Trosky - "Ruins"
Welcome back to the Illyrian coast everyone!
Today we'll focus on the coastal town of Trosky. It is a rather popular town along the northern Illyrian coast because of its beach (sandy beaches are quite rare in the Illyrian Empire, as you will have noticed from the previous entries
). The town itself is fairly modern and was founded during the second half of the XIXth century. Its name means "ruins" in Illyrian and refers to the ruins of an ancient town on the same site. This town was once one of the most prosperous towns in the Empire, but was abandoned in the late XVIth century because of silting up of its harbour. Several monuments from the old town remain to be seen even today: two splendid castles and a very large parish church, although the latter one is quite ruined. The two well preserved castles, the so called "Sea Castle" and "Land Castle" (the names will become clear from the pics
), along with the nice sandy beach were the reason to "rebuilt" the town in the XIXth century. During this "rebuilding" however everything that remained from the old town, except for the church, was destroyed. The two castles on the other hand were completely restored to their former glory and remain popular tourist attractions to this day.
Enough history for now, let's have a look at the town!
A historic postcard.

Back in the present, we'll start at the Sea Castle, built in the XIIIth century. It's still a bit foggy this morning, but this shot is obviously taken from the same spot as the postcard
.

The other castle, the Land Castle, was onced linked to the Sea Castle by a break water. The remains of this break water can still be seen. If you would like to go to the Sea Castle nowadays, however, you would have to take a boat
. Also visible here are a few of the numerous hotels in Trosky, largely built during the XIXth century. To the right the train station.

The hotels extend all along the beach. Here a view of the west end of the beach with the small light house.

Visible here are both castles and the remains of the break water. The beach is still very quiet, probably because it's still very early in the morning
.

The town itself....... The building in the center with gardens is the oldest hotel in Trosky, the Palace Hotel, built in 1857. On top the most "modern" hotel in town, built in the late 1960s
.

The entire town.

Sunset in Trosky. To the right the ruined parish church from the XIIIth century.

When it gets dark, there isn´t much to do in Trosky, except maybe going to the casino in the Palace Hotel. I guess everything in town is still a bit old-fashioned.

The fog again.......

Oh well, time to go home. Hope you have enjoyed this visit! See you next time.
