Ahnikov
Welcome back everyone!
Today a visit to one of the (slightly) larger towns along the Illyrian Coast: Ahnikov. As we will probably return here in one of the next entries, we'll visit just a part of the town today: the old town and the marina.
The town was founded in 1226 on the site of a large rocky peninsula, together with a castle. Soon after, it was entirely fortified and became one of the most important port cities in medieval Illyria. The old port hasn't survived to the present day, but a large marina can be seen on the same spot. The city layout is traditional Illyrian: on a steep slope with many historic buildings. Surrounding the old town are several "modern" parts and some beaches.
First stop is the old town. It contains many old houses and large parts of the city walls have survived to this day. Visible here the only possible entrance into the walled old town: the main (and only) city gate. To the right is "wall street" (guess were its name comes from
).
Slightly further down the road are the "castle stairs", leading up to the castle.

The main sight in Ahnikov is the castle. Nothing remains from the original XIIIth century castle after a large reconstruction in the XVIIth century. Situated here is also the main church in town, dedicated to st. Ursula.

On the site of the old harbour a new marina was built in recent years, seen here early in the morning (still a bit foggy at sea.......). On top some of the hotels in town.

Tourists can take a balloon ride, offering splendid views of the town and its surroundings.

We'll conclude this first tour of Ahnikov with some overviews. On both pics you can see the two light houses at the tip of the peninsula.

Thanks for visiting the Illyrain Coast! Hope to see you back soon.......
